now just give it time. make these about as big as a pin head, and we will have "transformers" then give them even more time and make them about the size of cells, and we will have a "liquid metal" T-1000..... this really reminds me of a program from the 90's about evilution that start out as a simple 2 axis blocks, like these, but given task like swimming and they will make a fish like thing after 1000's od generations.. pretty cool if they mixed both programs.

@Wesmac4 for the life of me i can not remember, but i saw it on a show like beyond 2000, or inventions, one of those early science shows.... but it was about evilution, to do simple tasks, like "walking" or "swimming" ect. it started with little block like these, and ended with some cool stuff, I know others have done other things like it, i bet you can find it with a simple search.

I must ask. I just finished my sophomore year of computer science and this stuff is very interesting to me. My plan is to study AI after my undergrad. Are each of these forms programmed directly or does it create a shape it thinks best fits the situation? Also for the motion detection. Is it simply a state machine that runs checks to decide on the correct action to take if a new action is required?

I think you're cheating. You programmed every move didn't you? Not amazing. Simple if-then-else programming. I would be impressed if these blocks can do this all by themselves via neural nets or something similiar. Maybe a chemical brain or something like ours would be more impressive. To be able to do all this without any programming at all on how to do it yet the organism finds out how to do it all on their own is better than this toy you made.
