I will wait until the Delta Queen returns to the river before I pull out my checkbook. I have no interest in the propeller driven modern American Queen.
@baritonebynight AQ isn't propeller driven- she is just so big that she needs z-drives to help her maneuver into the docks. She is driven by her paddlewheel.
@TheStrasburg90 It was my understanding that the paddlewheel wasn't strong enough to push the boat so the Z drives do most of the work..2/3 of the work and that the paddlewheel could only drive her in pool water. I wish they would have designed her like the big boats of the past like the JM White and made her a sidewheeler with engines powerful enough to drive her instead of using the Z drives. I personally have no interest in her and am a Detla Queen or bust kind of guy.
@TheStrasburg90 That's too bad that they are spending money to return the modern propeller driven American Queen to service while the historic Delta Queen's fake is undetermined. I'd rather the Great American Steamboat Company have bought the Delta Queen and rallied to return it to service. As far as I'm concerned, the American Queen should be scraped and the money given to Saving the Delta Queen.
@baritonebynight The Delta Queen had some major issues that would've costed the Delta Queen Steamboat Co. a ton of money. Word around the grapevine says, however, the she may be coming back. It looks like there may be plans in the works for her return to the rivers. And I don't think you can scrap the American Queen, you just can't scrap the largest steamboat ever built. People would go nuts because there are a LOT of AQ fans that would go ballistic.
@theshipman im pretty sure her steam engine has 1000 horsepower. she has two z- drive popellers for added strength. they said the wheel is 1/3 total horsepower.
The Str. American Queen is a genuine steamboat; that is to say that her main means of propulsion is accomplished by a large sternwheel operated by true steam engines. Steam that powers the engines is produced in boilers that burn a type of diesel fuel, and diesel is also used to power two azipods mounted on either side of the paddlewheel. So to answer your question, she is powered on both diesel AND steam.

@baritonebynight Like I said, they preserved the DQ as best they could. I'm just glad something is returning to the river.

Does Str stand for Sternwheeler or Steamer?

Steamer. This is a fairly common convention for steamboat designations.
