he is so simply phenomenal...so effortless, light, modest, epic, and colorful, that the orchestra is poised and inspired to follow him...when that happens, you get performances like this...
I don't like the ending from Giulini:It's way too slow..the last orchestral tutti should be the final blast of this relentless movement...but he ruins it.In his other dvorak with Rostropovich he does the same..what a pitty...
Thank you for this, what a gift! I've heard all of the great cellists and nobody's playing has touched me like this. Any chance of posting the rest of this concerto?
some people do that, can you tell me why yoyo ma turns his head to the right when he plays? (away from the scroll) people have different ways of getting comfortable, it sometimes looks weird lol
I know you may not like my answer. Western media did not interested in that...! Soviets also were bad enough to screw western talented people too. But here is what I would do, I would read about him more. Danny Shafran playing on his Amatti cello. He died already. But his works are great as Rostropovich. Moreover, he taught master classes all over the world - Paris, Tokyo, Vienna, Berlin, Milan.... But, ... not in U.S., he as forbidden, although he did play in N.Y., S.F., and L.A. too.
Absoutely the best cellist ever! Shafran's cello is just an obedient tool of his voice (and he has a great deal to say in this concerto). He has truly incredible range of colors and depth which I've never heard of any cellists/violinists can come even close to him (not even his students such as Misha Quint, Suren Bagratuni etc.) I just can't believe anyone can criticize Shafran's play....he is either mentally retarded or having too much wax in his ears.....
How come The Strad magazine never celebrates Shafran? This 'cellist deserves more recognition as an artist than probably any other string player. Damn straight.
Waw! Just the best Dvorak I never heard! What a power, what a sound! What I was doing all this years listening the Rostropovich, Ma, Maisky, and other versions! That's how the Dvorak must sound like!
I love him. I don't think he's the best, but he is defnitely up there. I prefer Feuermann or Rostropovich.

To compare Shafran to any other cellist is laughable. There is an Artist with no compromise who gave his life to music and to us

I don't know why he isn't as famous as other great Russian musicians, like Rostropovitch, he should.
In my opinion, one of the best cellist.
But one question : do you know why his ear is "stuck" to the cello ?

So he can literally be a part of the music.

I think it's very touching to see Shafran press his head against the side of the instrument. It's done as one would caress a lover.
