I think this guy is more technically advanced and experienced than Derek Trucks, but in all, I think Derek can just summon his musical spirit to be bestowed upon us every time he picks up a guitar. Kind of like a modern-day hendrix. Not to undermine this guy. This is pure brilliance.
@dahudge14 I normally don't do this regarding individual opinions but in fact, in this case, I must. I like Derek Trucks a great deal and he is an amazing musician but to mention his name in any context with Jimi Hendrix sounds at best, well, ridiculous...
I appreciate your opinion, but I guess you're taking it a bit too seriously. In my opinion, Derek Trucks and Hendrix obviously have some connection with an intangible realm of music that goes way past musical theory. Although if they are different, even down to the way the hold the guitar, then fine. But I'm just saying that they play music for the feeling, not for impressing anybody, even themselves.
If you don't agree, then maybe I'm just truly lost in my understanding then :P
♫"I think that the reason he sounds so different is 'cause of where he's from. I can hear fiddles a lot in his playing, just from the way he raises the notes. Slide is just another voice you can have. You can really make a guitar sound like a person, and Sonny Landreth knows what that's about."♫
@betbuk You are one heck of a great writer! That was (is) beautiful. I tip my hat to you and your English teachers or whomever it was that got you to this place where your words flow like a white water rapids heading straight for a waterfall...and then the canoe goes south...and the last song is when the canoe hits...and everyone is wet but still smokin'! You rock!!!
> "do you mean "does he ever play without a slide?"
I've watched about 5 videos of him, and I haven't seen him play without a slide. But I'm only concered with lead guitar, so if he plays a particular song without a slide but there's no lead guitar in that particular song, then I wouldn't be interested in learning that song.
I mean I guess I like it, but it just doesn't have much feeling to me it's like it's just playing fast and showing off what he can do. To me at least.
@MrCordell81 True, he does do this occasionally, but he also writes great blues and rock songs and is a good singer who's gotten better and better as he's aged.

Sonny uses a Dumble Super Overdrive amp. His Strat has some kind of Di Marzio pickups. Also, you can see a Line Six delay modeler and a Fulltone overdrive/distortion in the video.
I saw Sonny live at the Birchmere in Wash DC ... I was sitting at the front table and his fingers were still nothing but a blur. hey, what planet buddy ?
I hope you don't think Sonny falls into that category, because this is about his only frenetically fast tune. Uberesso is his nod to his espresso addiction. If you listen to more of his stuff, you'll find that this is the exception rather than the rule. His slide is soulful and artful, it ain't about speed for him.
Check out more of Derek Trucks playing with the Allman Brothers Band, and with his own Derek Trucks Band. There's a good video from this concert series where he plays Clapton's song "Anyday", not to mention all the times he played with Clapton both on this tour and in March 2009 at the Beacon Theatre
I sure will. I've watched some of the Allman videos with Trucks. He's great. I saw Duane Allman perform about a year before he died. I'm trying to learn how to do it, too. It's not as easy as it looks.

Talk about being blown away. A buddy and I just saw him in Minieapolis and we were mouth breathers for an hour and 40 minutes. What an unbelievable talent. I didn't know about him 2 months ago, how the hell is that possiable??
