  • impresionant the best slide-guithar ever

  • I could listen to the main lick over and over again.

  • Holy crap. And I thought Derek Trucks was good.

  • @acuity67

I think this guy is more technically advanced and experienced than Derek Trucks, but in all, I think Derek can just summon his musical spirit to be bestowed upon us every time he picks up a guitar. Kind of like a modern-day hendrix. Not to undermine this guy. This is pure brilliance.

  • @dahudge14 I normally don't do this regarding individual opinions but in fact, in this case, I must. I like Derek Trucks a great deal and he is an amazing musician but to mention his name in any context with Jimi Hendrix sounds at best, well, ridiculous...

  • @rodlonger17

I appreciate your opinion, but I guess you're taking it a bit too seriously. In my opinion, Derek Trucks and Hendrix obviously have some connection with an intangible realm of music that goes way past musical theory. Although if they are different, even down to the way the hold the guitar, then fine. But I'm just saying that they play music for the feeling, not for impressing anybody, even themselves.

If you don't agree, then maybe I'm just truly lost in my understanding then :P

  • @dahudge14 Believe me, I'm not taking this too seriously; I'm LMFAO!!!

  • @rodlonger17

    that's cool

  • Eric Johnston meets Michael Bloomfield!

  • Amazing player and a very good song.

  • my parents are going to see this

  • this guy is my slide guitar teacher !

  • One of the best Slide-Guitar Players of all Time!!!

  • The king of slide guitar! He makes it look so easy!

  • Comment removed

  • ♫"I think that the reason he sounds so different is 'cause of where he's from. I can hear fiddles a lot in his playing, just from the way he raises the notes. Slide is just another voice you can have. You can really make a guitar sound like a person, and Sonny Landreth knows what that's about."♫

  • Best slide- guitar player ever!!!

  • ÇA, C'EST VRAIMENT PAS UN MANCHOT!

Faisant partit à mon avis, des meileures guitaristes

  • I've met him several times and seen him plenty of times this cat's in a league of his own

  • When he its those sweet melodic runs it's ike watching an orchid bloom in the middle of a tornado.

  • @betbuk You are one heck of a great writer! That was (is) beautiful. I tip my hat to you and your English teachers or whomever it was that got you to this place where your words flow like a white water rapids heading straight for a waterfall...and then the canoe goes south...and the last song is when the canoe hits...and everyone is wet but still smokin'! You rock!!!

  • @elyulsessence

Is this some kind of homo erotic courtship your doing on here?

  • @betbuk what a great description!

  • @betbuk what the hell?

  • Nothing I have ever heard has made me so happy!

  • sounds alot like "Slow Drag / Cincinnati Flow Rag" by rev gary davis

  • The Eric Johnson of the slide guitar !! Incredible genius !!

  • Does this guy sometimes play lead without a slide?

  • What's not "lead" about this? Or do you mean "does he ever play without a slide?"

  • I have only seen one video where he doesn't play slide (something with john hiatt) but he is said to be a good non slide player too.

  • @boredtodelusionFan check out the song "the road we're on". It's slide free and 100% awesome.

  • I mean I guess I like it, but it just doesn't have much feeling to me it's like it's just playing fast and showing off what he can do. To me at least.

  • @MrCordell81 True, he does do this occasionally, but he also writes great blues and rock songs and is a good singer who's gotten better and better as he's aged.

  • @furyxan Yeah he does sound pretty good I checked him out man I just don't care for this song too much. But Yeah.

  • Incredible guitar playing. When I saw this live, my jaw dropped.

  • He looks JUST like an older steve vai

  • Except I prefer Sonny's music 454357843658 times more, lol.

  • @tudortoomey Steve Vai with soul and a slide...

  • This dudes awesome!!!!!

  • Jesus Christ. Unbelievable.

  • see cannibals from ``a night in london. sonny is there with mark. best dvd you can get!

  • @Akuyoung Un-fucking-believeable! Absolutely the best concert in town (that goes for each and every player, singer, roadie, EMT, etc.)...hell of a show and the best dreams and memories anyone could ever ask for. Eric...I tip my hat to you!

  • what is this song called?

  • Comment removed

  • 'Uberesso' off his latest album 'From the Reach'

    Sonny is the man!

  • Fantastic slide player - who is on bass with Sonny here? Great band - I love the whole vibe!

  • That is Dave Ranson, been tight with Sonny since the early days.

  • I...wait..hmmm...wow.

  • Comment removed

  • that first comment is by a jackass we all know that though

  • He does play a Dumble in the studio, but you're right he probably doesn't take it on the road. Not even for Crossroads.

  • Hes crazy

  • Best slide player ever!!

  • Probably the best piece of slide guitar i have ever heard.

  • I was lucky enough to meet Sonny the night before Crossroads at a small bar in Chicago where he was playing. A great guy and amazing talent.

  • i saw him at the waterfront blues festival in portland oregon this summer and it was awesome to watch him play!!!!!!

  • if he was in the yardbirds, he would as famous as Jeff by now :p

  • I don`t think the Yardbirds would even be ready for Sonny Landreth in 2009!

  • just saw sonny live. played this song (uberesso). incredible

  • My band is playing in the same show as him in september!!! I can't wait lol!

  • I hadn't heard of this guy until earlier this week, he did a live session on the Paul Jones Show (Radio 2, UK), and I became an instant fan. They asked for 4 tracks, he recorded 9 and did a pretty extensive interview too. Still available on the BBC site

  • Okeeeeeee see Mu profile sonicavenga

  • He's a machine!

  • I saw him live two nights ago and by god it was the best concert i've ever seen to by a mile

  • COOL!

  • Comment removed

  • Like he had to apologize cuz its a 'difficult song!' he is so modest! man whatta player!

  • that's such a sick tone out of a strat, anyone know his setup?

  • also the lick at 0:41 is probably one of the cooler things i've heard, you know, ever

  • Sonny uses a Dumble Super Overdrive amp. His Strat has some kind of Di Marzio pickups. Also, you can see a Line Six delay modeler and a Fulltone overdrive/distortion in the video.

  • thanks for that

  • Also has the Ultimate Alltenuator on that Dumble

  • That's not a dumble. That's a matchless amplifier. More british marshall or ac30 in tone. Just sayin.

    Peace

  • Your Correct my bad I might have been a little drunk that night. No excuses though

  • lol nah its all good broski!

    =)

  • I saw Sonny live at the Birchmere in Wash DC ... I was sitting at the front table and his fingers were still nothing but a blur. hey, what planet buddy ?

  • Had the pleasure of seeing him for the first time 'down under'.

I've created a playlist of 7 HD videos I took during the festival. Enjoy.

  • anyone know what tuning he's in iv'e been trying to figure it out and i cant

  • If you go to his website, there is a list of some of his tunings. There's a bunch of them.

  • I hate guitar players who think that playing fast makes you great. Slash and billy gibbons understand this better than most.

  • no kidding...seems like it's becoming endemic again with metal making a comeback

just makes me appreciate the ones with some taste even more :)

  • I hope you don't think Sonny falls into that category, because this is about his only frenetically fast tune. Uberesso is his nod to his espresso addiction. If you listen to more of his stuff, you'll find that this is the exception rather than the rule. His slide is soulful and artful, it ain't about speed for him.

  • Very well put, ...er.. g!

  • I used to think that playing slide limited your ability to play somewhat. This guy certainly changed my thinking about that!

  • Check out more of Derek Trucks playing with the Allman Brothers Band, and with his own Derek Trucks Band. There's a good video from this concert series where he plays Clapton's song "Anyday", not to mention all the times he played with Clapton both on this tour and in March 2009 at the Beacon Theatre

  • I sure will. I've watched some of the Allman videos with Trucks. He's great. I saw Duane Allman perform about a year before he died. I'm trying to learn how to do it, too. It's not as easy as it looks.

  • Good melodies of sonny. before not podia to obtain this video .. valio a sorrow(sentence) to see it

  • Holy smokes! In my opinion, Sonny is one of the 4, 5 best rock players today, this song is in the same league as Johnson's Cliffs of Dover, technically almost even more impressive.

  • Comment removed

  • Excuse me sexyduck69, how exactly do you justify that statement?

  • in my opion he is a better slide player dont cry

  • Rory was my alltime favorite guitar player but to say he was "better" than Sonny isn't valid, they're completely different players, Sonny's technique is far beyond what Rory ever did.

  • awesome.

  • It's nice to see some true talent. This guy is amazing.

  • can anyone give me a basic idea of what amp he's using and if he is using a distortion pedal what kind? cuz i rlllllly did fender clean sounds but im not too keen on there like distortion lead kinda sound but i REALLY dig this guys and i ya im guessing he's using some kind of fender but idk, anybody?

  • I know he's using a Matchless Chieftain head and a Matchless 4x12 cab. He's also using an Ultimate Attenuator so the distortion might just be the amps distortion. If its not the amps, its probably a Hermida Audio Zendrive pedal. The other pedals he uses are a Keeley Compressor and a T-Rex Replica Delay.

  • In my opinion he is the greatest guitarist still alive

  • id love to see Derek trucks jam with sonny!

  • Like, far out man......

  • He's a lot better when hes a sideman for a band.

  • Is this standard tuning, does anyone know?

  • i think he usually plays in Open E, not sure though

  • the growl at 1:53-54!!!!

OMG, that is just sooo tasty nasty. I will die to get that tone

  • Scoops, Sonny is using a Dumble ODS head through a Marshall cab, and I think that's his '88 Fender American Standard. Most of that tone is the Dumble - a very clean overdrive.

  • wow.

  • Wow. I have heard him with John Hiatt where he made sense. Somehow this is a bit like watching gymnastics and not music. Unfortunately that sometimes happen with great virtuosos. They are not great composers... But I am still in awe of his proficiency...

  • Listen to this a few more times...it's a really remarkable composition--like Paganini, but more lyrical--especially in the context of all else that this bluesman has written. He is a virtuoso, but that hardly ever stands out.

  • Joe Satriane's father! lol

    much better!!!

  • He's the Joe Satriani of slide guitar

  • I'm with you 100% bluesbren...I just try not to read the crap and listen to the music...

  • This guy is my favorite slide guitarist - so original...

One gripe - why is YT becoming the vehicle for juvenile twats? See below...

  • I'm glad someone finally said it lol

Personally I'm a fan of any decent slide guitarist because I can't play with slide to save my life. So uber props to anyone this good.

  • Hoo, boy! That's good stuff, like Grandma's home cookin'.

  • Just like some NES game bg music.

  • From the Reach has to be the best cd to come out this year. This is an amazing song. Now I've got to learn to play it. :]

  • Forget it.

  • I so love this guy hes bloody brilliant! I discovered him when I watched "A night in London" where he plays with Knopfler, who I idolize btw, and loved it.

I can tell you one thing Im rushing to get this new cd of his XD

    thanks for posting 5*

  • A stunning performance from a brilliant guitarist.

  • What's the name of that song?

  • Uberesso

  • Überesso. Is that better?

Oh, and it's called an umlaut... and it's Germanic.

    Have a nice day!

  • Who's dumb mofo fuck? :D

They don't use those umlauts in Sweden... of course there are two dots in Swedish in like ö and ä, but those have nothing to do with umlauts. Ü is a German thing.

  • Haha! You are a fool!

  • the "Ü" is german you dumb fuck.

  • its fucking swedish

  • I am from fucking sweden dumbass

    "a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z å ä ö"

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FUCKING "Ü"

  • i hope you die the slowest and most painfull of deaths

  • haha. youre weird. uhh... don't really know what to say to that. maybe you should find a psychiatrist, possibly a friend to talk to because you don't seem like you're used to talking to people.

  • my problem isnt my capability of communicating.. i just hate people like you..

yes i might need a psychiatrist, but thats none of your business,

  • The better they, the more humiity they have- and Sonny's no exception.

    just amazing

  • Amazing, Brilliant, The Best.

  • Mouthbreather. Hmm...thats a good way to finally describe how I feel when another guy comes along, broadsides me, and makes me throw my guitar into the bonfire of insanities! Good stuff.

  • eric johnson ran head first into duane allman my god

  • Talk about being blown away. A buddy and I just saw him in Minieapolis and we were mouth breathers for an hour and 40 minutes. What an unbelievable talent. I didn't know about him 2 months ago, how the hell is that possiable??

Great player and class gentlemen as well
