@fdfdkfnd I feel this tempo is perfect and gives an atmospheric effect, whether it is how Satie wanted it played or not is totally irrelevant. Who wants to learn to play exactly the same as another person? That would be so boring. The melody doesn't really sound broken at all, either. Really great performance in my opinion!
@ChurpMusic Thnak you. After I listened to Reinbert de Leeuw' Gnossiennes I started myself to find all other interpretations of Satie's Gnossiennes irrelevant. I uploaded all 6 Gnossiennes to Youtube, you will find them easily, I guess.
I loved Satie, so i practiced a lot and was able to play it myself. Then I heart Reinbert's Satie and i haven't played it anymore ever since. It now feels like failing an exam. Once a month I listen to the CD at my piano and watch the keys.
@nadaniente115a ... I agree with you and Klangzauberer. I've heard other interpretations of Satie's work and they're very good in their way. But Reinbert de Leeuw just captures the essence of Satie's music like no one else I've ever heard. And you're right -- I love how he plays it at such a crawl : )
Erik Satie used to play in bars and cafe's for a living. I almost get the impression these are the faces he saw. The one's he studied when composing this beautiful song. Creating an almost mystical atmosphere; serious, curious, but never depressing. Yeah I really like this video, it potrays Satie as an observer of human emotion.
@Screwbiedooo Good question... and no other explanation than mouth and eyes put together because mouth and eyes or other body parts can be used in a composition the same way as everything else... :-)
Trois Gnossienne: I. LENT
LENT
Gnossienne no.1 is supposed to be this slow

This doesnt come near to an original by Satie. Slow tempo breaks the melody. Just my opinion.

@DCoelho1968 You may play it your own way too... We are all human beings... :-)

@DCoelho1968 Yes, play it, listen to the cd. The piano is hard to put into the car.

A bit too slow, no?
erginakif 1 year ago
@erginakif de Leeuw plays it perfectly. Satie indicates on the score "Lent" or "snail-paced".

@Klangzauberer ... So they say... I have others (Ciccolini, Quéfelec, etc.) but I like the restrained playing of De Leeuw... ):-)
