Well I'm not sure either, but this is what i think. The Japanese alphabet is use mainly for pronunciation not for coding, the English(Latin) are best for it because it can be more mathematical and scientific. Plus it's a lot easier to write/read it because hiragana/katanana and kanji takes up more space which usually clutter the labels. And, why they don't use their real names? Maybe because they had to many contestants xD
@MosheZuerich Everything in aikido that has no sword implemnted has a counter part that uses a sword. Its simply uncommon to train with weaponry as Aikidoists don't wear armor and never competitivley spar as it goes against basic Aikido beliefs.

I wonder why they use English letters and numbers to identify the contestants instead of Japanese characters.

Look at Google. Aikdo was created by Ueshiba. It's about Harmony and it's only a little with swords, most unarmed.
Kendo comes from the japanes Samurai (japanese Knights), and is today a sport-oriented Fighting Art with Bambus-Sticks (Shinai), no real Swords.
IN Aikido there are real Swords, but no free fight with Swords.
