Who is not religious? Truly. Do we not shower religiously, go to work religiously, defend our beliefs or non-belief religiously? Come on.
What is rationality with no moral compass? What moral compass can exist without definitive wrongs and rights? Without a definitive north, south, east or west no map or compass will get you anywhere but lost.
"We need to shed our timidity" kinda sounds like fanatic mobilization if you ask me. For what purpose? To merely exist?
@mad000001 Saying 'religiously' that way is using an adverb to imply rigidity in habits, nothing more.
When you don't believe in deities and realize that moral teachings were conceived and written and taught by people, that doesn't make you amoral, as theists like to see atheists.
Atheists (a religious term, really) think about mobilizing to remove the heavy yoke of religion from the collective neck of humanity and stop all the destruction in its name..
@BellyBlues That is exactly my point... religious or religiously merely indicates one's fanaticism or dogma about a particular belief, practice or habit. Furthermore (and unfortunately overlooked by Christians and Atheists alike), pure religion is to care for widows and orphans. Not really a bad life motive.
That all being said religion and religiousity are completely different ideas. Many Atheists like many who call themselves Christians are religious but do not practice pure religion.
i'm religious, so what? not the religion is the danger, its the dogmatism, thats always dangerous, religious or not. if you look at communism you'll find an atheistic movement that was also cruel and dogmatic. religion is fine as atheism, if you take it as private affair. i don't want to hear allday long how bad the believe in god is, and i can imagine an atheist can abdicate someones opinion of enlightment. so be less fanatic and keep your believe or not believe with u. that's my opinion.
no that was not the point, even if "religion is opium for the people" sounds like an atheistic war cry a bit... the point was that even atheistic constructs wich are meant to help people are dangerous with the right fanatic at the trigger. headword dogmatism.
Doubt it. No one can commit atrocities like that from being "too rational".
And Atheistic war cry? You mean like "Allah Akbar" or "In the name of God"? Opium of the people is more of a statement, and shouldn't even be considered a "war cry"
@AJOAndre2 he kind of is making a good point there. Its not exactly religion that makes bad things, its the stupidity of people following without question. And being gullible and stupid isn't exclusive to religious people. On a side note, if you blindly follow a nice guy won't result in much but religion doctrines, when you look closely, almost always ask you to go to war with unbelievers and that can be dangerous.
@SamDinoHarmon Atheism is about thinking for yourself and not subscribing to dogma, most of us dont like dogma, it's easier to be born again than to grow up..
actually i've been thinking about that... why not have a kind of reverse jehovah's witnesses, armed with pamphlets and science textbooks, knocking on doors to open peoples minds to atheism? i mean apart from the fact that we'd get shot at a lot...
@SamDinoHarmon : I you can keep your belief in your head, that is just awesome. If you dont base any action upon it, or utter any opinion based on religion, it cant do no harm. And it will die with you. And the world would be so much better and brighter place for it.
Damn why cant Bill Maher be the president.
