not that the voice is bad... but it really loses ALL the haunting feeling of Tom Waits' original. demo and more..
What's with the the prop guitar that you barely touch... you have a nice voice, you should work on that and make it sound great on its own... and find the ghost that you missed out on ;)
@ChipandSwell Well, Chip what can I say, I'm the first to admit that cover tunes aren't my strong suit. I tend to focus more on my original material. Check out one of the other videos on my channel or let the search bar lead you my way. Nonetheless I adore Mr. Waits' body of work and sometimes an artist is moved to explore what moves her. Heck, if Scarlett Johannsen can do it, why can't I? ;)
Love to hear what you think of the original stuff, blasphemy and all.
Looking back, I must admit my opinion sounded a little harsher then I remembered :S I usually a little more diplomatic with my criticism... :)
That said... your reply tells me that you have the very quality of taking criticism with grace and appreciation!!! A precious and rare quality in the entertainment arts... and just as important as talent :D
@ChipandSwell I did click a thing or two after my duplicate post (in case you wondered ;) , but I honestly can't remember... I will certainly give your original stuff a listen soon and comment with a fresh bowl of fruity loops :D
@jesshillsorchard i'd like to hear a version of this with a piano, or at least some of the bells, as far as vocals, i like your voice but i feel you lose a lot of the quality (meaning feel, fabric etc.) with the clarity of your voice remember that tom waits is perfectly able to croon in a sweet clear tenor and that consequently when he inflects a song the inflection is quite as important as the tone or the words, for instance Underground would have sucked sloppy balls if he had done it different

This is such a lovely and haunting presentation. Then again, what else would I expect from the lovely and haunting Jess Hill?
I nominate Calliope for the award for best supporting feline.
