As a kid, the summer 0f 1975 my mother was earning her teaching certificate out of town, and instead of leaving four teenagers at home, we camped at a lake near the university for about three weeks. Very nearly the same as a desert island. One of the cassettes was Natty Dread. Davesubs - I would of said it was pretty much a team effort, with all of the original Wailers contributing to blending a sound that allowed both Tosh and Marley and to a lesser extent Bunny to having successful solo careers. You can't discount the influences of other artists and producers in jamaica in the 60's and 70's either!

But nothing Tosh did later quite stands up to Marley's albums like Survival or Exodus. Tosh was dope tho , and one of the great reggae artists, with no doubt, with all respect.

The Wailers covered a lot of material, they wrote great songs, but a lot of songs people think were there's, were actually covers. If you've never heard James Brown's studio LP "Say It Loud" , the Wailers covered every song (!), learned them vocally, and the Studio One band made up new music to go along with each one. Tunes like "My Cup" "Soul Shakedown Party" and many others, which had different titles on the JB record. Obviously "One Love" , besides the traditional mento songs they redid.
