sea animals have a mucus coating to protect them against parasites. Mantas have an exceptionally thick layer of mucus on their bodies, which means that they need exceptionally great protection. By riding them - even if "carefully" you remove part of this mucus, exposing the skin of the ray to parasites. think twice whether a video and a nice memory is worth the damage you cause to the most graceful animal of the ocean.
that is up there with the most awesome things I have ever seen. I have dived and seen a manta, but I never really had any desire to pursue the damn thing. they're just so huge.
i was reading a book, and it said that while Benchley was on a boat expedition with a few friends, his fried's wife went for a swim. she saw a huge manta ray, like this one. over the next few days, they all got a chance to ride it, and the book is based off this experience.
@riskybisness The creatures are not here for our amusement or to treat as a theme park. You don't know if that manta might have been pregnant and or in labour. You don't know if he/she was injured and was trying very hard to just stay alive.
It's disrespectful to the manta. Just because it's there doesn't give you the right to treat it like it's your "property".
There's an entire world of creatures stuck in tiny tanks because humans think of these creatures as "theirs". And that's wrong.
@ladysblues Lady, your concern is touching & if this video was of a person beating a manta and taking it home to put in his pool, I would agree with you. However, this video is a LOVELY example of how human beings are not only respectful of nature (by not touching), but have a desire to connect with creatures big and small on our planet Earth. Even if the manta was pregnant or injured, I'm sure the manta has much more dangerous things to contend with in the ocean than a docile curious diver.
The two things that I would be scared of is 1: Your really deep in the ocean and don't know where the manta is going and 2: What if a shark randomly appears out of the blue? :O!
@IrishJimmyB its when a moving object, displaces the matter around it, (normally air) and something is following the same path, the following object encounters less resistance making it have to exert less energy to achieve the same speed.
@NativeMetalVT yes, mantas have terminal mouths and mobulas have subterminal mouths....but what I'd like to know is: in what part of this video can you see its mouth? I would say that the size of the animal in the video is more of an indication of species than mouth placement, since you can't see that. I'm inclined to agree with you that it's a mobula, but only because it's small.
@dammitpea I know absolutely nothing about marine biology, but to me, mobulas have those two "horn-like-things" that protrude out whereas mantas have mouths that protrude towards their underside. Again, I really have no idea.
@NativeMetalVT Both Mobulas and Mantas are able to curl their cephalic lobes into several positions when they are not actually using them to feed, including the pointed "horns" you are referring to, which helps to give them a bit more streamlining when they are moving at speed . The main phenotypical differences between the two species are their sizes and the placement of their mouths.
As far as touching...never a good idea. The "protective film" on sea beasts frequently protects them from cuddies.
Visit the Manta Ray Bay Hotel in Yap, jump off the third deck of the Mnuw, and let the great folks there show you the Mantas up close. Research the "fish" thing...don't want to irritate the anal / grammar police. Just call them Manta Rays until then. The critters don't care either way.
Wow. The widely varying experience/education/opinion levels are interesting. I don't think I would try this, because I would not want to disturb the Manta...but it doesn't look like it WAS disturbed so????
wow what can I say? beautiful and funny in a way... always having that friendly fish around you :) it must have been very cool to experience that.. thanks for the vid
heres the problem :) in my language you can call them fish but its wrong. we differ
Chondrichthyes and Osteichthyes (i had to look it up at wiki) the difference is we only use one word for naming them. english uses true fish and cartilaginous fish. thats the problem. we only consider fish if it has bones. (complitated structures sry if its not correct)
At least the remora gets a free ride! I don't think they hurt the manta, although sometimes they leave oval "scars" from their sucker plates. I have a number of favorite manta videos on my site, you can see the remoras clearly on some.
It's a remora. They have suction plates on their heads, and hold onto the mantas, upside down. When they arrive in a school of plankton, remoras hop off, and both munch on plankton. A good science project would be to see if the same remoras continue to ride the same manta through time.

Riding mantas is harmful to them. Touching them breaks down their protective mucus.

@ladysblues
A. It was wild in the ocean
B. Pregnant, hurt or not, the man was swimming behind it. Not touching it.
C. Someone filming something in its wild habitat hardly constitutes my property.
D. Human beings are destroying the ocean, no question, do you not think some study to see if the effects we are having can be negated is worth it...
E. Manta's are well known to swim with and play with divers, I doubt they would do that if they where in pain.
