mod them. Take them apart and take out the mesh on the grill that restricts the soundstage and also the rubber to lower bass and mids should open up a bit. There are clips on here to do that. The hd555 will sound like the hd595 and you'll have saved about 100 extra bucks... =)
I just got the HD 205 and those hurt my ears, my jaw and even make my eye balls hurt. I think I'll try the HD 555. Good review. And thank you for NOT putting them BACK in the box and taking them out.
She looks so nice, very nice voice and very good review. I have HD 201, HD 212 pro and HD 555, and yes it was very nice. The main reason for not using 212 pro is because of the ear pain get after wearing them for sometime.I
At least she has a real fucking opinion rather than some fucking bleak malnutrition nerd unboxing and fapping all over the box for 5 minutes. So pretty please, stfu, with sugar on top.
Instead of criticizing her clearing her throat or appearance or anything, why don't you guys focus on the video's point....headphones! Thanx heckler52! Just ordered some on Amazon after watching your review :)
@heckler52 thanks for your review the 555's definately feel amazingly comfortable (just bought mine yesterday), have you seen the supposed mod from the 555's to the 595's by @skikarl ? I heard the frequency response as far as the bass chapter goes and it's a whole lot better..
Horrible review. She must be listening to really crappy music if she thinks the HD555 has little bass.
As for the HD212, throw them away and forget about bass farting mainstream cans. Try to train your ear back to the natural bass, like the HD555, and you will rediscover how great the music can sound.
Hmm, I also started out with the HD212 and I just purchased the 555. I've been browsing to buy new headphones and these were on sale on Amazon for $79, so I bought them. I hope the bass doesn't sound too bad because I love the bass.
nothing against her but she clearly does not know what she's talking about. this headphones are made to be listen on a home AV receiver or the least using a portable amplifier. iPod and PC just don't have enough "juice" to drive the huge speakers inside and the 10" long wire are ideal for a home listening environment.
Try using a cheapo(~$20) Fiio 5 amplifier in conjuction with an iPod you might find the sound quality and base greatly improved. USB DAC would also be great for listening on a PC
I think if you put this headphone in an ipod aspect... you are wrong, this headphone is made for at home to enjoy music and not to wear outdoor kindda made for audiophile...
The secret to high end headphones is you need a high end amp. iPods and computers won't have enough power to drive these guys. Another thing is if you can set the impedance on your amp, you can increase the impedance (even if your headphones are lower impedance) to open up the sound stage.

Hah, funny comment. And no, absolutely not the same thing. When you listen to music on a quality pair of headphones it's almost a totally different experience. @didimissomething Just an observation: if there's a market for something, e.g. $100+ headphones, and it's a massive and thriving market, it's because it matters. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, as in none, not any, not even slightly whatsoever. But that's okay! Now don't comment on any audio related topic ever again and live a happy life, unharassed by people who think you're clueless.
apparently you never tried bose/sennheiser/grado/ monster/vmoda/ audio-technica headphones. Once you do, plz come back and tell us what you think of the apple earphones. My god... those things leak sound. I can hear what my little brother is listening to two seats back while going 90 miles/hour on the highway.
@jeffreysyang apple earphones are not what apple expect you to listen to ... i think they make a little money from ultimate ears or some other made-for-ipod earphones brands.

@didimissomething thats cheap Sennheiser made a limit edition one for 10 grand the ipod ones you mention suck balls true audiophiles will get something more expensive then HD555 . And its recommended to use a headphone amp with these.
@didimissomething for one thing, iPod headphones are made for the sole purpose of testing whether the iPod works...they don't care whether it sounds good or not. Also, music quality is important, and a flat frequency makes sure that you hear music exactly how the original artist intended it. I would know because I produce and rap/sing
oh and if you want to see the (possible) effects of burn-in sooner, you can leave them playing music at a medium-high volume while you're not using them

thanks for the review. im looking for some headphones to take with me on the street, but dont want them too big either. something like the new BEATS BY DRE "SOLO". But looking for an alternative to those.
how bad does the sound leak from these headphones? I have two roomates and i dont want them getting mad while im watching a movie when theyre sleepin. Thanks in advance.
Loved your video... Just purchased a pair of HD212 Pros, and I'm looking forward to test them out., so hopefully they'll be here in 3 days. By the way, you're a cutie pie, and you've got sexy lips...
It's true, bass isn't everything :D Gonna get myself a pair of these in about a week. Not gonna amp'em right away though, all in due time. Cheers! Helpful review!
Both great and superb clarity. Now Thank for you comment...I am going to buy HD 555 for the surround sound which the punch isn't that important to me.
really ?!?! i got sennheiser hd-595 that are better than hd-555 and 212pro... i you got the 700$ amp (from my brother) and a sound card i got yesterday for 150 $ you got better headphones than sennheiser hd-800
doesn't matter the hd-595 is still 1000 times better... 1. the hd-555s bass gets worse after 50 hours... 2. hd-595 : 12 - 38.500 Hz hd-555 : 15 - 28.000 Hz
if you got 200$ amp with hd-595 is just the same as a 150 $ amp with hd-555 coz the hd-555 benefit from an amp (or sound card) more than hd-595... but if you use them for ipod... hd-595 forever
I also went from HD212 to HD555 (well, with HD497 in between). And I quite disagree with the author of the video.
When I had the HD212 I was blown away by the details in the sound, and the bass too like you.
When I had the HD497, then later the HD555, I was again blown away. And since then I knew the 212 were quite poor. Yes bass are stronger. But actually much too strong, fatty, overwlowing. 497 and 555 are so much better qlt. And space positionning on the 555 is just incredible.
Then I do agree that the HD212 is a better choice outside or in noisy environment (and HD25 would be even better, quality is as high as the 555, in a closed headphone package): it protects from outside noise, and one doesn't need to rise the music volume.
Anyone who says these headphones suck needs to get educated. Go read reviews in audiophile magazines and you will see these headphones rock! Many audio engineers use them in professional recording sessions! GET A CLUE PEOPLE!
The Sennheiser HD555 just suck. The Soundquality is good, but the Quality just suck (Made in China). I sent them back and ordered some AKG K601 for 200 Bucks.
@johnnydigital77 Which other headphones that are like 100$ sure srh 440? Im having a hard time deciding, also what effect did she say it may be when you break it in?
look for a pair of the sennheiser 485s. I think they are discontinued but you can still find them. they are open headphones. they sound awesome with an ipod and greater hooked up to a receiver. fantastic bass and so very comfortable. being open, the sound does leak but I could care less about disturbing someone on the subway. I own them and love them.
i don't believe the 212's have a louder bass, its just that the higher ends are not as pronounced therefore creating a sound illusion making one think that the 212's seem more bassy
So how do you explain people who burn them in by playing continuous music for several days without actually wearing them? A lot of audiophiles burn in that way, and afterwards almost always hear a better sound than initially. That has nothing to do with getting "accustomed," since you're not even listening to them during the break in period.
Thats just how headphones are designed, they need to loosen up and settle in before getting their true intended sound quality.
I say it again actual mechanical break in has its merits and is real, results vary from unit to unit. WIth some speakerséheadphones the break in has a good deal of weight and in other designs it has much lesser impact.
A true test would be blind A/B tests, of fully broken in (as per manufacturer recomendadtions) and fresh out of the box.
No, if something tastes like crap one day, chances are its still going to taste like crap a week later.
Your mind doesn't grow subwoofers. How about when a brand new pair of headphones sound like crap and have no bass and physically are not able to produce low frequencies very well, but then magically 100 hrs later it can and don't sound like crap anymore and have much louder bass.
When I burn in headphones, I leave them alone and don't listen to them, so its not a "perceived" difference.
KlipschEAR: no, klipschear, the fact that you THINK it makes other people 'sour' is what makes you arrogant. Most people (including myself) dont care to spend thousands of dollars on headphones, because guess what? most people are not audiophiles.
The fact that you try the "you dont have the means" line calls out your arrogance, and teenage behavior. Give it a rest, 'kid'.
KlipschEAR: I'm far from a child, so drop your stupid little insult. Also, quite frankly, the rest of the world doesn't give a shit how much you spend on audio. There are a great many of us out here who could throw away that kind of money but don't because it's foolish. You have a niche hobby that you've taken to an extreme ignoring the diminishing returns. I also drive an old car I didnt spend much on, want to tell us about how having a newer car makes you an auto affectionado, arrogant prick?
I do jot spend on cars as they devaluate fast. What I spend on audio makes you sour, this tells me you do not have the means.
Again I will repeat break in is composed of two main factors, you getting used to your product (perception) and the actual change done by parts losening up(in this case the drivers).
Arrogant, read your BS you will see plenty of arrogance. Child
yeah, i don't bother with FLAC, I only have 2 albums in FLAC. My default is 160kbps AAC VBR, which I have to save space yet keep quality high (at least to me).
Who do you call idiot child? Burn in is above all get used to the gear, second it is actual mechanical break in. Did you even read what I wrote, do you know how to read properly?
Now I have more audio gear you will ever own in your entire life, burn in is real but not as major in most cases as some make believe.
Even with my HD800,PS1000 burn is brings minor yet real gains in SQ.
The burn in is more about you adapting to the headphones, yes the burn in is real but minute. The main "burn in" happens by you getting used to the headphones/speakers.
Sold my Audio Technica Ad700 and picked up a pair of Sennheiser 555's off Amazon. I couldn't stand the little 'wings' on the Audio Technicas. The 555 don't have quite the sound quality of the AD700, but they are FAR more comfortable and have that 'warm' Sennheiser sound. I'm glad I traded them out. The 555 however aren't as comfortable as my old 570, which was a rebranded 400 level Sennheiser. They will probably stretch out a bit over time though, so all is good. Awaiting 555 burn in. :)
Well, I use a headphone amp and a external equalizer. I feel the bass. It's not as powerful as my $800 monitors, but they're good to use at night time. ^^
I actually have the Sennheiser HD500, they are less bulky than the 555, but then again i find the wire way too long. Luckily, the HD500(i dunno about the others) lets you change the wire if you want, with a 2.5mm to 3.5mm wire.
Hhhmm. the review was fine but it was a little one sided. because most of the points you discussed was about the base. I was looking for the review of HD555 talking about how balanced the sound it reproduce without tweaking the equalizer. Good headphones produces sound exactly how the sound engineer wanted to ang feels like you urself is in the recording room.
I think I can help u out.Just like you, I've never had a headphone as expensive as this untill I decided to get this 3weeks ago. Of coarse, you won't get a full dolby surrounding sound you'd get on speakers but sound quality is darn impressive. I do agree with the lady that bass isn't as strong but it will burn in after about 3months. I also played around with equalizer and bass isn't a problem for me anymore
Awesome review. I've been thinking about getting a pair of these. They're about $100-$110 on ebay, would you recommend these? or should I go with something else like the 515
i actually got mine today and your review helped me a lot. Like you mentioned, bass can be better but overall, the sound balance and highs and mids are excellent.
Same here, although the bass is fine for me. We'll have to wait to see if the burn-in is just a placebo as mentioned :-)
These are not for those who want to reduce outside noise. I can easily hold a conversation with them on, but that is almost perfect for my life style and work.
Follow up to my last post I just got a pair of inear sony ex-700 ear buds in my post today. to replace my iphones standard headphones. and if you looking for a deep base its great they do work a lot better with my music system. they are cheap as chips to buy of ebay i got a pair for £6 including delivery so yup recommend them for that price who can complain.
they are amazing both build and sound compact enough (folding) to used with walkman and iphones but they are well build. the sound is crips and the base is what youw ould expect from AKG. i recently invested in a pair of Denon AH-D7000 in tokyo (costed me £100 cheaper then i was getting in london - by the way i got them for £650) The sounds is amazing each note is crip it gives you an almost live presence atmospher, if you get a chance to have a listen to them in a store please do.
I had both these headphones but the sound seems to be mergeing into each other hard to explain, each instrument sounds is unclear. So i moved and got a pair of AKG K450 while waiting on seoul airport for a flight,
She complained about the bass not being very good. I have to disagree, completely. Once you burn them in, the sound is very well balanced. I just bought a new pair after the band snapping on my old ones, and I can vouch that burn in does exist, as I have noticed that the bass is also pretty low, so you will want to burn them in for a couple of weeks.
Also, these headphones were not built for portability, obviously. I use them for gaming, music listening, music editing, etc, mostly computer based stuff.
Fuck, shipping to Canada is like 30 bucks. I'll PM you the link though. It's still cheaper then anywhere else, and it's not like any other places have free shipping on such a good price. If your in the US then you have a steal.
i got my hd555s for for about £70 a year ago... the sound does get better as you break them in... they're great for all round use, for music though i love my hd525s absolutely insane and just perfect sound quality

thanks for the review. im looking for some headphones to take with me on the street, but dont want them too big either. something like the new BEATS BY DRE "SOLO". But looking for an alternative to those.
BetoTheButcher 1 year ago
@BetoTheButcher Stay away from Beats and Bose, they are ridiculously overpriced.
Try AKG K518 LE/ K81 DJ if you want bass or Grado Sr60 if u like rock. These are retailed for much less than the Beats Solo or Bose On Ear.
DuyLe1011 1 year ago
I have the sennheiser pro 212hd and they are tremendous. It take a couple of days to break them in though and once they are break it its tremendous.
The genre I mostly listen to is Rock, Hip Pop, Reggaeton and sometimes classical.
These head phones are tremendous for movie watching also with crisp surround sound you are in the movie theater.
*Sound leakage on these headphones are very minimum and that will the volume turn all the way up on my Cowon S9 (the best mp3 player out there)
.
Jonboy866 1 year ago
how bad does the sound leak from these headphones? I have two roomates and i dont want them getting mad while im watching a movie when theyre sleepin. Thanks in advance.
irushhhh 1 year ago
@irushhhh
Close to none. You will have to turn it up all the way for someone sitting you hear what your listening too and even then its minimum.
Jonboy866 1 year ago
@irushhhh thats for pro hd212 but I dont know about hd 555
Jonboy866 1 year ago
@Jonboy866 as open-backed headphones, sound leakage on the hd555 is almost as if they are facing outwards.

Not at all from the HD212, a lot from the HD555.

It's true, bass isn't everything :D Gonna get myself a pair of these in about a week. Not gonna amp'em right away though, all in due time. Cheers! Helpful review!
myriadovi 2 years ago
Nice. I've Bose NC2 and AblePlanet SC500.
Both great and superb clarity. Now Thank for you comment...I am going to buy HD 555 for the surround sound which the punch isn't that important to me.
utubmania2009 2 years ago
So you are saying the HD555 lacks bass? well of course you are getting a open design.
To properly drive this you will need a headphone amp.
If you are looking for bass then look no further for the Denon D2000 or the Deyer DT990

Do these leak as much sound as the koss portapros? I was wondering since they are both open ear design.
NinjaISwill 2 years ago
really ?!?! i got sennheiser hd-595 that are better than hd-555 and 212pro... i you got the 700$ amp (from my brother) and a sound card i got yesterday for 150 $ you got better headphones than sennheiser hd-800
GuitarFreakMan44 2 years ago
oh you must hear things, the HD595 and HD555 shares the same driver
fafeifa 2 years ago
doesn't matter the hd-595 is still 1000 times better... 1. the hd-555s bass gets worse after 50 hours... 2. hd-595 : 12 - 38.500 Hz hd-555 : 15 - 28.000 Hz
if you got 200$ amp with hd-595 is just the same as a 150 $ amp with hd-555 coz the hd-555 benefit from an amp (or sound card) more than hd-595... but if you use them for ipod... hd-595 forever

Tfpsly 2 years ago
Then I do agree that the HD212 is a better choice outside or in noisy environment (and HD25 would be even better, quality is as high as the 555, in a closed headphone package): it protects from outside noise, and one doesn't need to rise the music volume.
Tfpsly 2 years ago
Anyone who says these headphones suck needs to get educated. Go read reviews in audiophile magazines and you will see these headphones rock! Many audio engineers use them in professional recording sessions! GET A CLUE PEOPLE!
zinpgh 2 years ago
The Sennheiser HD555 just suck. The Soundquality is good, but the Quality just suck (Made in China). I sent them back and ordered some AKG K601 for 200 Bucks.

@johnnydigital77 dude please help, hd 515 or 555? the 515 are way less in cost, and which is the later model? Anyways i just cant decide.
yyyy2999 2 years ago
@johnnydigital77 Which other headphones that are like 100$ sure srh 440? Im having a hard time deciding, also what effect did she say it may be when you break it in?
yyyy2999 2 years ago
look for a pair of the sennheiser 485s. I think they are discontinued but you can still find them. they are open headphones. they sound awesome with an ipod and greater hooked up to a receiver. fantastic bass and so very comfortable. being open, the sound does leak but I could care less about disturbing someone on the subway. I own them and love them.

EdGeyy 2 years ago
It's not. HD212 bass are louder. HD555 bass are cleaner, more detailed.
Tfpsly 2 years ago
Thanks, i have them now and they are amazing... really love them!!!
EdGeyy 2 years ago
i don't believe the 212's have a louder bass, its just that the higher ends are not as pronounced therefore creating a sound illusion making one think that the 212's seem more bassy
333tanx 2 years ago
I'm not sure.
Now when I use my 212, I always use an equalizer to reduce the bass to get some decent sound.
Tfpsly 2 years ago
gawtmeelk,
Debating with you is like playing the special olympics, the winner is still very special I leave you that title.
One last time , break in is mainly two factors YOU getting acustomed to the new headphones sound and actual suspension compliance changing.
Capiche?
KlipschEAR 2 years ago
So how do you explain people who burn them in by playing continuous music for several days without actually wearing them? A lot of audiophiles burn in that way, and afterwards almost always hear a better sound than initially. That has nothing to do with getting "accustomed," since you're not even listening to them during the break in period.
Thats just how headphones are designed, they need to loosen up and settle in before getting their true intended sound quality.
Millahtime 2 years ago
@Millahtime
KlipschEAR 2 years ago
Yea it definitely varies, it doesn't always have the same effect on all headphones.
Millahtime 2 years ago
@Millahtime
If I gave you a cream cake. and then several days later gave you another and said I had improved my recipe (but had not), would you be able to tell?
The human mind is hard wired to make certain things appear more attractive to you, when in reality the chances are nothing has changed.
snedie69er 2 years ago 2
No, if something tastes like crap one day, chances are its still going to taste like crap a week later.
Your mind doesn't grow subwoofers. How about when a brand new pair of headphones sound like crap and have no bass and physically are not able to produce low frequencies very well, but then magically 100 hrs later it can and don't sound like crap anymore and have much louder bass.
When I burn in headphones, I leave them alone and don't listen to them, so its not a "perceived" difference.
Millahtime 2 years ago
KlipschEAR: no, klipschear, the fact that you THINK it makes other people 'sour' is what makes you arrogant. Most people (including myself) dont care to spend thousands of dollars on headphones, because guess what? most people are not audiophiles.
The fact that you try the "you dont have the means" line calls out your arrogance, and teenage behavior. Give it a rest, 'kid'.
gawtmeelk 2 years ago
KlipschEAR: I'm far from a child, so drop your stupid little insult. Also, quite frankly, the rest of the world doesn't give a shit how much you spend on audio. There are a great many of us out here who could throw away that kind of money but don't because it's foolish. You have a niche hobby that you've taken to an extreme ignoring the diminishing returns. I also drive an old car I didnt spend much on, want to tell us about how having a newer car makes you an auto affectionado, arrogant prick?
gawtmeelk 2 years ago
Listen closen gawtmeelk,
I do jot spend on cars as they devaluate fast. What I spend on audio makes you sour, this tells me you do not have the means.
Again I will repeat break in is composed of two main factors, you getting used to your product (perception) and the actual change done by parts losening up(in this case the drivers).
Arrogant, read your BS you will see plenty of arrogance. Child

v0 rips are fine, but anyone who claims to be able to differentiate a proper v0 rip to a proper FLAC rip is either a liar or delusional.
(not that you were saying otherwise)
Baronvonbadguy3 2 years ago
yeah, i don't bother with FLAC, I only have 2 albums in FLAC. My default is 160kbps AAC VBR, which I have to save space yet keep quality high (at least to me).
Salvia02390 2 years ago
KlipschEAR: you're an idiot. burn in is very real, and it's not 'getting used to them'.
gawtmeelk 2 years ago
gawtmeelk,
Who do you call idiot child? Burn in is above all get used to the gear, second it is actual mechanical break in. Did you even read what I wrote, do you know how to read properly?
Now I have more audio gear you will ever own in your entire life, burn in is real but not as major in most cases as some make believe.
Even with my HD800,PS1000 burn is brings minor yet real gains in SQ.
KlipschEAR 2 years ago
The burn in is more about you adapting to the headphones, yes the burn in is real but minute. The main "burn in" happens by you getting used to the headphones/speakers.
KlipschEAR 2 years ago
Sold my Audio Technica Ad700 and picked up a pair of Sennheiser 555's off Amazon. I couldn't stand the little 'wings' on the Audio Technicas. The 555 don't have quite the sound quality of the AD700, but they are FAR more comfortable and have that 'warm' Sennheiser sound. I'm glad I traded them out. The 555 however aren't as comfortable as my old 570, which was a rebranded 400 level Sennheiser. They will probably stretch out a bit over time though, so all is good. Awaiting 555 burn in. :)

Sennheiser over the ear full size cans will be more about a flat frequency response rather than impressive bass.
May I point to the AKG 702's ,simply brilliant headphones that come not too far from the electrostatic like HD800 !
Since I got the AKG 702's my HD600 are gathering dust.
For good bass and dynamics a quality headphone amp is mandatory IMO.
Good review BTW.

Good headphones produces sound exactly how the sound engineer wanted to ang feels like you urself is in the recording room.
gregorioalano 2 years ago
So the base gets better with time then? cool!
I´ve never owned a really good pair of headphones!
like the best ive had were icemat... And im guessing they are bad if ur really into audio, I dont really have anything to compare em with:P
So, do you recommend these headphones now when uve had them for a while?
and sorry for the long commet :P like ur vids! keep it up!
snelpiller 2 years ago
I think I can help u out.Just like you, I've never had a headphone as expensive as this untill I decided to get this 3weeks ago. Of coarse, you won't get a full dolby surrounding sound you'd get on speakers but sound quality is darn impressive. I do agree with the lady that bass isn't as strong but it will burn in after about 3months. I also played around with equalizer and bass isn't a problem for me anymore
yojmd61 2 years ago
ah cool, thanks for tellin :)
snelpiller 2 years ago
Awesome review. I've been thinking about getting a pair of these. They're about $100-$110 on ebay, would you recommend these? or should I go with something else like the 515
LeetGarra 2 years ago
i actually got mine today and your review helped me a lot. Like you mentioned, bass can be better but overall, the sound balance and highs and mids are excellent.
thanks
yojmd61 2 years ago
Same here, although the bass is fine for me. We'll have to wait to see if the burn-in is just a placebo as mentioned :-)
These are not for those who want to reduce outside noise. I can easily hold a conversation with them on, but that is almost perfect for my life style and work.
Thanks for the review.

I have the HD280s and they are absolutely amazing. One thing I like is that you can DJ with the 280s. You can't do that with the 555s.
poopguypenis2 2 years ago
they are amazing both build and sound compact enough (folding) to used with walkman and iphones but they are well build. the sound is crips and the base is what youw ould expect from AKG. i recently invested in a pair of Denon AH-D7000 in tokyo (costed me £100 cheaper then i was getting in london - by the way i got them for £650) The sounds is amazing each note is crip it gives you an almost live presence atmospher, if you get a chance to have a listen to them in a store please do.
