Although he was the better-known of the two, Jose Iturbi (1895 - 1980) always felt that his sister Amparo (1898 - 1969) was the better pianist. It's easy to hear why here.
I studied with Bruce Sutherland in the late 60s and he took me to one of Amparo's recitals downtown. We went backstage and he introduced me to her. She was so gracious and friendly. I was too young to truly appreciate it! Great post! :)
My grandmother was personal friends with Mr. Iturbi. She has many photo albums filled with pictures of him and of the two of them together when he played in the Kansas City, MO area. She also has many letters from him and always tells me about the phone calls he would make to her when he was going to be in the area (Kansas City). He would always send her tickets to his shows. I have a letter from him to my grandma congratulating her on my birth. Wonderful memories.
What a find! I studied under Amparo in 1958-59 when I was 11-12. Last time I saw her was when she performed at Mt. Tamalpais (Bay Area) at a summer fest in 1968. They were from Valencia, Spain. I don't think I ever met Jose, but remember his house in Beverly Hills. He had 8 Baldwin grands! (Must'a been a sponsor). She was a great human being and took me on charitably as we were new to the U.S. from Mexico. Hopefully soon I will post a Bach piece she taught me back them. Thanks for this.
Does anyone have any biographical info on this wonderful artist?? Where was he from? There should be more Jose Iturbi videos. Thank-you Vaimusic, for sharing.
I don't much care for the music here, but the pianists are marvelous. Jose Iturbi needs more YouTube uploads, particularly excerpts from his wonderful MUSIC TO REMEMBER and SPANISH PIANO FAVORITES albums. Please, someone?
My mother was a student of Amparo and Jose Iturbi in Los Angeles in the late 40's. What a treasure to see her and hear her play. I also heard that she was a highly gifted pianist.
Wonderful pinists, both, altho Amparo, unfairly, rested in José's shadow. Great to have these clips as they seem to have recorded little together. He was such a stylish film actor as well! Thanks so much.
This is grate, I like them very much, He was a wonderful artist (and she too) this is the first time i listen him with his sister, (sister right?) just the title is wrong I dont know what they play but it is not the Sentimiento fron the andalucian dances (we play them, i invite you to watch them and hope you like them) greetings.
Look at her technique!! Stunning!!

Amparo was one of the strongest female players I've ever seen. Few women had the power to play like she.

Iturbi said, after they played the first piece, "That was the Romantic Walz (Valse Romantique) by Chabrier." So I guess that's it!
