  • A great difference with Barenboim and Brendel is that they do not use the pedal.

When you are able not to use the pedal and still are able to effect an ongoing sound you can divide the two beautiful melodies in the left and right hand.

I am reluctantly to say you create too much of a lovely broad noise in due respect of your fabulous technique.

  • The genius is playing another genius and had enough time to correct hair :o)) Love her :o))

  • The audio missing at the beginning can be found at the end of the second movement.

  • The sound is better here that in your next video "In HD"... It's a shame that the beginning is missing...

  • Brilliant.. just brilliant.

  • Wow, this is one of the first videos I have ever watched from her, besides searching for Totentanz by Liszt. And now how much has added to her knowledge since. 2007, now it will be 2012 wow! Thumbs up if she is also your inspiration.

  • Titanic execution met a swan and the two became one.

  • What totally amazing playing

  • @kerumble Still incredible three weeks later. I have to get my daily fix of this woman's playing, this and La Campanella are real favourites. Does she play a repeat in the middle of this? My score doesn't have that.

  • Brawo!!!! Gratulacje!!!!!

  • Beautiful playing. And the coda is off the hook!

  • PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT. I LIKE YOU VALENTINA SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH! YOU ARE THE BEST! THANK YOU FOR PLAY THIS WAY!

  • There were 60 people who apparently pressed the dislike button by mistake OR they have no clue as to good music.

  • Beautiful!

  • There is not a word less than BRILLIANT to describe this playing by Valentina...and absolutely Masterclass composition from my favourite composer whom I comsider as my idol, none other than The Great LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN. Only a talented and brilliant player could play this composition with perfection; just like Valentina. Cheerio and Bravo Valentina..!!!!

  • My piano teacher plays that as well, and I never get tired of listening to this, Valentina you hit the hardest!

Does anyone know whom she was a pupil?

  • I just listened to Lang Lang and I listen to Lisitsa right after. I felt that there is a flow when she played that. I like her play much much better than Lang Lang's.

  • i bet too........

  • I wanted to go to the WC, but I didn't wanted to stop this beautiful music for that!

  • why there is no sound in the first few seconds?

  • Apasionante!

  • Did u even look at the music? lol

  • wow i got chilz

  • Can you imagine the number of pulses on the keyboard? Lisitsa is great, and what about Beethoven? I am just a human being.

  • Valentina Lisitsa is an excellent performer. She has a long way to go, be she's still good now. What I'm saying is that she's good now, but she will only get better.

  • incroyable

  • A little piece of heaven!

  • #6:00

  • Marry me.

  • EARGASM

  • Emotional!!! I love this performance because she uses Bösendorfer. The sounds of Bösendorfer suits "Appasionata"!

  • @70arte YEAA! I TOTALLY agree!! Bösendorfer are the best!!!

  • ベーゼンドルファーの音の特徴がよくでていますね!特に低音!!!!

  • Great stuff, Valentina - keep it up...

  • Beethoven had a intelligence out of this world.

    Simply beautiful

  • @itisjinzo and your use of the word "noob" shows that you have the mentality of a pre-teen, loser, which means that you have no clue :D Welcome to spam kill.

  • like a boss

  • Wow Valentina, you really play amazing!! I wish I had such tallent. The only thing left for me is enjoying the play of others to the max ;)

  • The last minute is so powerful!

  • That was a good exercise! How dare he.

  • Those scores are just being there useless

  • JIj bent facking slecht!

  • @tjappaa Echt serieus man.

  • Very dark song, and very great.

    Bravo!

  • STUNNING performance - a big thank you !!!!

these 57 must be deaf, blind, malicious and jealous ... or all together !!

  • Not bad but this is not a very elaborate interpretation of Beethoven's Appassionata. You miss many important dynamic nuances (e.g. lack of control over the numerous diminuendi and crescendi of this movement, and your pianissimo cannot be recognized as such).

I recommend listening to Brendel's recordings of this sonata.

    Although, this is quite good.

  • @sdfgdsgfsdfg

I'm waiting for hear how you'll play this piece!

I deeply doubt it will better!

  • @Hobott : What a stupid reply. Of course, I can't play this better (I hope you know what music criticism is). Although, I have the right and - I assume - the competence to judge her rendition. Continue conversing with me after you have read through and understood this sonata and compared it with much more detailled and elaborate interpretations of e.g. Arrau or Brendel. I admit, my comment was very general - I could've been also be more precise but I do not want to waste my time.

  • @Hobott

If he can play it better or not, that doesn't change that his statement is right.

  • @6lues6rother , you're wrong. A person who hurry to criticize and judge so gifted and perfect artist as Valentina Lisitsa, has no true criteria in art. He only wants to show his claims for a height, but they're fake.

  • @Hobott Nonetheless, he's entitled to his opinion. Saying "play it yourself or your opinion is worthless" is a retort typical of a child. One doesn't have to have technical expertise to know if something isn't done well.

  • @ihsism You're totally wrong. There's a reason, when somebody's criticizing some such a high professionalism, as Lisitsa's playing, to know has he the right and the competence to do this. In other way, he's simply profane. So, childish is to judge all that you don't understand, for let know everybody how high you are. This is a lack of humility and tolerance. Very bad!

  • @Hobott

That means in your opinion the culture part of a journal doesn't have the right to exist, because those who write the articles and critcs of concerts or cd's are mostly only scientists of classical music.

And tell us, which instrument(s) must one play perfectly to have the right (by you) to critizise a symphony for an orchestra?

  • Comment removed

  • @6lues6rother To criticize a symphony for an orchestra you have to be a bit more close to the art of composition and orchestra conductor! You can't hide your total ignorance behind every sort of sophism. The main is you write pure bullshit about this absolute excellent performance. If you don't like her Appassionata go listen to other artists, asshole! That's the way she personally understands and feels the piece, you closed mind! Don't write me! I have no time to waste with such fools like you

  • @Hobott

OOOHHH, now you begin to insult because you havo no real arguments. Tell us simply: Who has the right to criticize a pianist?

sdfgdsgfsdfg critic shows a lot of comprehension of classical musics, your arguments don't.

  • @Hobott

He didn't hurry, his arguments are clear and plausible. If you think that you know better how the Appassionata must be played, let us know. Between this interpretation and those of Backhaus, Kempff, Arrau are worlds. Hear them, compare them.

  • @6lues6rother I can clearly say it's completely wrong to ask from one artist to be like an other. Every artist has his own understanding of this or other piece. And there's many different tastes among the listeners. To bring all to one unique denominator is amateurish. Lisitsa owns a huge technical skills and she is capable to perform Appassionata in her own way. What she's doing. It's very good she isn't trying to copy a somebody great before her. Awe

  • @Hobott

I didn ask from anyone to play like another. When I write "compare them" I mean compare the versions of the Appassionata from many pianists. She has the technic to hit the notes at the right time, but does she has the technic to play Beethoven like a great pianist? Here she doesn't show it. Perhaps you understand a bit more if you see these interviews:

    Sandor: watch?v=_UdqYg5tMfc

    Horowitz: watch?v=Nxixsf_-2n0 from 6:00-6:40 (it's in english)

  • Comment removed

  • @6lues6rother Yea, she has the technique to play this like LISITSA! Great pianist or not- this is a question of the personal opinion. But what is out of doubt - she owns a great individuality and personality like a artist-performer. She's phenomenal technically, believe me! And it's so impudent from you to send me educate myself when you don't understand anything in music and can only repeat what prestiges say. That's why you can't feel and estimate the merits of Lisitsa's performance.

  • @Hobott please, just go to wikipedia and read the article on "argumentum ad hominem".

  • Valentina...Thank You for blessing us with this extraordinary rendering of Beethoven`s masterpiece. You have gotten very deep inside both his mind and his heart.... not to mention your own...and then brought it out for all of us mere mortals to bear witness to this mind-boggling beauty and complexity. You are amazing.

  • im melting....op ther i go my face just melted

  • Fuckin' eh, Valentina! Bravo. That was thoroughly good.

  • Brava ! Great performance.

  • Miss Valentina Lisitsa is probably the best living pianist in our times. Evry time I hear her play I am completly happy.

  • i have a pen that you solve to ennn with may towelve manny.

  • Listening to this, i understand, thet, despite of anything, life worths to be lived.

  • @gnomkannibal

    that*

  • This is one of the most outstanding performance of this movement that I have ever listened to. Absolutely beautiful. Bravo Valentina!

  • Great! Thanks, Valentina.

  • I love how she plays this piece (not to mention all others!) -- it's treated with respect, yet played with fire and zest. She does not play with a stereo-typical, clinical feel that has come to be associated with "classical" music, nor does she rubato so much you can't tell what time signature the piece is =)

  • I just learned that V.I. Lenin once said that "If I don't stop listening to Beethoven's Appassionata I will never finish the revolution." I can understand his point. Valentina Lisitsa is remarkable.

  • She plays the piano faster than I can type

  • god help us alll!!

  • The first few seconds are missing the audio. I want to hear it all, this is the best performance of this piece I've ever heard!!!

  • YOU

    BLEW

    MY

    MIND ! :O

  • Salvation!

  • I red somewhere in the book about Beethoven, that (it could be Shumann, but not sure) someone commented on a live performance of that work, and Beethoven himself at the instrument. The person has commented - ' such composition is written by a man capable of great violence, and even a murder'

Keep that in mind when listening to it :) and I think Valentina Lisitsa is doing the very same intepretation Beethoven would have done.

    Best wishes

  • I want to marry Valentina....

  • @snevetsznarf1978 Sorry, pal, she's already married to some lucky SOB. I think that's his voice at the very end of this video.

  • I bet beethoven couldn't play it like this..

  • You are very tanlented. You did a great job Valentina.

  • Valentina - absolutely superb performace, and one which I am sure, will have Ludwig Van Beethoven smiling down on you from heaven, and saying to himself:

"This is how it SHOULD be played"

You are a truly gifted pianist - and also very beautiful - and just as William Shakespeare wrote: " A thing of beauty, is a joy forever"

  • Valentina you are a superb pianist. I love watch your superb performances and I believe that you are one of the most brilliant players of our time.

Thank you for your art. Keep playng that we will keep listening.

    Antonio Carlos

  • Valentina you are a superb pianist. I love watch your auperb performances and I believe that you are one of the most brilliant player of our time.

    Antonio Carlos

  • .... : O .............. !!!

    Holy sh......

Just to think...... a few hundred years ago.... she'd have been burnt at the stake for a performance like this! This unnatural level of skill! : )

They'd think you sold your soul to the devil to play this way : )

  • kinjutsuu, please take your snobby attitude down the road and let us enjoy this in peace. Thank You.

  • Wow, amazing, only one mistake as well on this difficult piece

  • Such Fire! I'd like just just one tenth of it!

  • This is the best performance of Appassionata i ever heard!

  • O_O

  • she is perfect pianist !!!

  • music - the ultimate medium of creative expression

  • When the video first started she freaked me out with her long hair and pose.

  • @katherineiiish Me too! But she could haunt my house anytime. I'd buy her a grand piano and install her in the centre of the hall. Haha.

  • mind blowing...

  • Sweetness!

But what happened at the first 12 seconds of the song? I hear nothing but then at 13 seconds, I hear music. This is constant as well! Odd. Are my speakers broken?

  • I bet this is how Beethoven himself played it!

  • @dale9532

    That's really nonsense.

  • @dale9532 To be frank, no, he would have played it differently. But his musical world was so different. There are many that try to capture on the modern grand what Beethoven wrote with fortepiano ingrained in him, and though Beethoven would probably be impressed with the progress wonderful performers such as Valentina have made, he would probably also say that her interpretation, coupled with the dorfer, is unique.

  • Seriously this is just the best movement ever ;)

  • I NEVER get sick of this piece. ^.^

  • this made me cry...

  • Oh my God ojtiroemtgieoj *_________________* Amazingamazingamazingamazing!

  • Breathtakingly Sublime!

  • sin comentarios... excelente!! Valentina sos una genia!

  • Finally, an artist with Beethoven's intensity! Brava!

  • tu non hai venduto la tua anima al diavolo per poter suonare così,ma l'hai regalata a tutti noi, thanks we love you

  • Fanblodytastisk.....yes yes yes...

  • Valentina can be divided by 0!!!

  • Lol at the end dialogue

    "that was good exercise"

    "yeh"

  • @Saoirse078 have u heard richter? O:

  • great Valentina , will you perform in Hong Kong ? i 'm desire you will be come !!!

  • valentina lisita looks rather scary in this video :p

  • 7:30 goosebumps :P

  • Fantastic version! But the first 12 seconds no sound? :(

  • to those 52 people who disliked it:I really want to see you play this piece!!noobs!!

Valentina is one of the best pianists ever!!!!

  • @funk55558 Those who DISLIKED this would certainly never agree to learn this. Sorry, just had to argue with you:( I dont support the dislikers or something.. Fuck dislikers:D

  • @horekar i mean the dislikers of valentina's playing

  • Very mature, emotional and intelectually challenging music it is. You match the Bethoven's cosmic demandings. Valentina you are an amazing woman, indeed !

  • Valentina Lisitsa, la seule femme qui exprime bien la douleur et la fougue du génie et l'incompris Beethoven!!! L'Appassionata!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • awesome, idon't care about what the partition says ,but this woman is playing it good

  • wouaaaa, elle est vraiment, une machine, n'empêche, elle doit avoir mal au doigt a la fin nn?

  • "that was good exercise" at the end says it all

  • its perfect.

  • bravo! simply beautiful! a priceless gift you have.
