ROYCE GRACIE Caught: 6/14/07, following his unanimous decision win over Kazushi Sakuraba at Dynamite!! USA. Tested positive for: Nandrolone.....Fuck Gracie!
They pioneered it. You could argue Mitsuyo Maeda is the progenitor. Or some Japanese dude back in the 1700s. But most of us learned of this style because of the Gracies.
it doest take a genius to down talk the gracies. okay, their fighting style wasnt perfect, they were too proud a family, whatever. show some respect, they still helped MMA take off, even if they werent the first ones to do it
@CannedKoolaid Actually, moving around on the floor during a street-fight while someone is on top of you, in your guard, is not advised. The hardness of concrete can really hamper you. I think BJJ is at its best as a competitive sport, which with MMA, it has really exploded in popularity, as we all know :)
@SweetZombiJesus Exactly, if U do not plan to get in the MMA, I do not see BJJ really helping U. Maybe a few technics can help but I do not really see it helping U.
That wrestler is Kazuyuki Miyata, and up until getting caught, he was beating Royler. Kind of lame to only post the part of the fight where Royler was winning.
@Rej811 Them some mighty big wisdom you speak with. God help the Gracies if some Gold medalists spent just a year learning a few submissions and how to counter....................
Matt Hughes did the math. Ask Royce how that went.
The only problem I have with Royce is how he constantly lays on his back like a turtle that can't get up. And it's not even accidental. He does it on purpose. It's as if he still thinks nobody else knows what he is going to do. That's a bad habit in my book, even tho my book is old and dusty.
lol you should show when Miyata dropped that monkey on his head and punched him in the face. Royler was 38 and Miyata was 28. If they fought again Miyata would beat this monkeys ass just like yamamoto, Tokoro and Ueda did.
good thing biting isn't allowed...eye gouging, too. if so, i think the grappling dominance factor would somewhat be diminished. but a good sport to watch all the same.
@vinnynumbnuts The thing is when you say if eye gouging and biting were allowed it would diminish BJJ, you have to remember the BJJ can do that to; it doesnt go one way. I would rather be in a good position when I am doing that sort of thing.
@joebeast15 yes, i see what you're saying. it's just that in my mind, if one is on the ground with someone who's just taken a chunk out of his leg and is going for more, the natural reaction would be to get away from such a biter. i remember Enter The Dragon where roper is caught in an arm bar, and he reacts by biting bolo's leg, making bolo let go to get away from him. bruce lee, who really trained for street fighting, was a big fan of biting & eye gouging. i think grappling is hindered a bit
Yea if you get yourself in that leg lock there really is no good way out. Your arms cant push the legs off cause they cant bend that way and the legs over lapped so u cant push out.
its not all pride nowadays people! :) money talks. and if you dedicate some of your precious time just to fight someone the 2nd time without having something in return, its either you are already rich or too much pride. not cool
Royler is a disgrace to Jiu Jitsu. I'm referring to the situation where he pussied out of a match with Eddie Bravo and then made it seem like Eddie was the one who didn't want to fight.
Disgrace to Jiu Jitsu?? What a disparaging thing to even say. The Gracies have contributed more than any to the worlf of Jui Jitsu and MMA than anyone else in the world. BTW jaybird, Eddie Bravo was thoroughly thrashed by Leo Vieira in the next match at that same tournament in which he won Royler. As for the Bravo vs Royler rematch, Royler has still been competing where as Bravo has not competed since the ADCC 2003 tournament
@theGroveMan i realize how much the Gracies have done, but trying to make another person look like a bitch when he was the one who backed out is truly disgracing. And i said nothing about eddie bravo beating royler at ADCC, so i don't see what him losing to Vieira has anything to do with it.
Your free to your opinion of course. I just disagree with your remark and find it insulting. Royler never "pussied" out. He has and continues to compete. Eddir doesn't and has never done any MMA. He is a good commentator and has given us a few clever things with his rubber guard, but I am not certain he would win again. His WHOLE career is built on that one win. His whole success is that and nothing more.
@theGroveMan Eddie challenged Royler to another grappling match, Royler declined and insisted that eddie pay him an extreme amount of money. Of course eddie had to decline because of the stupid conditions, so royler said he was the one who declined. PUSSY MOVE
As far as his accolades, eddie bravo has brought brazilian jiu jitsu to new heights with his system
I already conceded Eddie has done "some" but no where near what the Gracies have done for Jujitsu. BTW, if Royler declined that doesn't make him a pussy. Such strong language for one behind a keyboard. Let's see your accomplishments alongside his.
A fighting style is only as good as the fighter! You could come across a guy in the street that has never done a combat sport who could kick some black belts and others asses! You can hate me for this comment, but some of you know this is true!
@Mattixxg Indeed, MT or box/BJJ are excellent. But I'm talking about the person. There are good and bad fighters in every style. I find it irritating that a traditional karate-ka who's done years of kata and dojo competition could think he could walk into a cage and win. Wing Chun Kung Fu is another. Very effective against Mr. Normal. But against a seasoned fighter....?
@Mattixxg I'm not a fighter anymore, but I can say this: I grew up in a nasty ghetto type place and learned 'real' fighting. I went on to do Wing Chun for 7 years before I 'realised'. Then I found that a JKD instructor had a place in my town. This guy will not be named, but he was a student of a one of Bruce Lee's students and an ex world champ, world renowned. I joined his gym and he put me against his 'best' student/instructor. I fucked him up! Enough Said.
This is why I say that at UFC 1 all the guys that beat the Gracies in their latter years would have loss. I say that because many of those opponents would not have known about jiu jitsu
Royce was the best. Period. You will never see any MMA's fight guys twice there sizes now. Royce broke the mold and set the stone for weight classes in MMA. Not many can say that. Royce Gracie proved technique over power and gave hope for all the smaller guys who thought the big bad bully was invincible. Peace, and respect for all the arts.
Wrestling +BJJ + Judo+ Muay Thai+American Boxing= Ultimate Fighter. people need to stop pitting one style against another... This isn't 1993..... the lessons that were learned in the first UFC still hold true, theres a reason it's called MMA and not just MA
@Ninjabarbour Funny thing is that when it first started it was called MMA because it was a mixture of different styles fighting each other, now it's a system made up of a mixture of different MAs.
The Gracies have unquestionably made a profound and lasting contribution to grappling... but they did this through the search of continuous simplicity and effectiveness of something that already existed (judo). To think that what they have created is perfect and finished would be just plain stupid. There will be further innovation, there will be further improvement. It would be smart to acknowledge that submission wrestlers are now breaking some ground and start learning from them!
Guy was not too smart about submissions, once those legs get up that high............well, you better start doing something quick........time to panic.
Nowadays , with development of american fighters, unfortunatelly it seems like they found the way to win the BJJ, of course the wrestlers are training this too, but the BJJ are not developing theirs wrestling in the same intensity.
@alpjits Yap, more and more wrestlers find a way to defeat BJJ players. Look at Munoz's last fight. Yes, he had to have submission defense training but he completely out grappled a legit bjj grappler in his last fight. BJJ guys need to learn wrestling or Judo in order to take the fight to the ground. How can you use BJJ if you can't take the fight to the ground. Recent example: Werdum VS Overeem.
all of you who hate on the gracies and brazilian jiu jitsu have obviously never engaged a real jiu jitsu player. you would know the truth. "wrestling beats this and this beats that" means NOTHING if you don't actually train (ie: most of you guys). keep hiding behind those keyboards.
also to comment on the video, I've trained with Royler before. great guy with amazing technique. one of the all time greats.
@Fatman116 all grappling arts have their advantages and disadvantages....... youre clearly pro-bjj and therefore bias in your opinion anyway, so your as bad as the other trolls
@Fatman116 If you are not going pro, how would this help U in a street fight??????? Only thing I have to do here is poke him in the guys or punch him in the groin area. Once again in a street fight BJJ is 100% useless. I have done it ove and over at the park her near my house when they have demonstarations trying to get students and now they know me they close up shop when they see me.
@christlicker Really ask any Japanese Jiu-jitsu expert. BJJs main focus is the ground fight, what good is that if their are multiple attackers? Japanese Jiu-jitsu does both ground and standing fight. Where do U live? I would be willing to spare with U. To prove my point. (No BS rules, street fight)
@MrStathis77 *sigh* You're clearly poorly informed. BJJ is judo with the ideal of leverage in mind. NO martial artist can EASILY defeat multiple attackers, this isn't a Steven Segal movie. In the case of meeting multiple attackers, which was obviously thought of when the creator was in the process of developing jiu jitsu, there are techniques and strategy to protecting yourself, not instantaneously knocking everyone out 1 by one.(Completely unrealistic)
@Govegeda Dude it is real simple, if I go to the ground like BJJ which 90% of BJJ is ground fighting. How hard is it for another guy to stomp my head. Now if I am using grappling technics like Aikido or Japanese Jitjitsu then I have a chnce. to win. With BJJ I have no chance. Garbage in, garbage out.
@MrStathis77 You cannot generalize an entire martial art in one paragraph. Genuine jiu jitsu, gracie jiu jitsu, if you ever payed attention, employs clinching and neutralizing striking, nobody is the last fuckin samurai and will easily takedown 3 attackers. And for the last time, that garbage you watch on T.V. is NOT jiu jitsu but a watered down knock off. Jiu jitsu comes from kano-judo, wait- you don't care. All you've ever seen from jiu jitsu is the guard which is used less than side control.
@Govegeda Wait a minute partner, How do U know what I have seen? I have a friend who is a 2nd degree black belt in Japanese Jiujitsu. I seen him fight. He goes all ways. So I think it is best you think before you talk.
@MrStathis77 I judged you based on your comments, which you made it apparent that all you highlighted was ground game, ignoring weapon defenses, pin defenses, "street move" and commoner technique defense, strike defenses, etc.. Also, any proven martial art should prove you use in a street fight, but Japenese Jiu Jitsu is a barebones version of BJJ, your argument is irrelevant.
@Govegeda Really is that so? then why is it in The Marine Corp. They added Japanese Jiujitsu not BJJ? If BJJ was so effective then why did the Marines who are the top line who are trained to kill, why they don't use it in their training. TKD was used 20 years ago, they took that shit out because it does not really help you. It is more like Fencing (An Art) Jiujitsu and Muay Thai, Aikido, Judo, are taught in The Marine Corp because they get straight to the point and it is more useful IN A FIGHT.
@MrStathis77 And no "dude" Your opponent can be used as a shield from the bottom position in such cases. Japenese "Jujutsu"(u said it wrong "dude") or Kano-Judo, was taught to the gracies and a much frailer, weaker, Helio Gracie redesigned moves to use more leverage to take down the opponent in a more efficient way. Your mentioned martial arts are defunct and are crippled by their commitment to tradition over evolution, which BJJ is always doing(people seem so unaware of this)
@Govegeda Really is that so? then why is it in The Marine Corp.
And once again you bait right back into my argument the MMA bullshit you watch is not GENUINE(except for the Diaz the Nogs and of course the gracies) Im tired of repeating myself, learn to defend yourself boy
@MrStathis77 Well I think we've reached the climax of this argument. I hope you can find something better to do than try to pick fights on youtube, that's all the time I have for you today. May our paths cross twice on the infinite walk of life.
@Govegeda Your the one who said learn to defend myself. What better way than in a fight. That is the best way, I think Bruce Lee put it best. Boards do not hit back.
@MrStathis77 I agree with Govegeda, there is no simple way or style to take on multiple attackers. Whether u use Judo, MT, BJJ, Wrestling, etc, there is no such thing as a simple way to beat multiple attackers. Even in Krav Maga they teach that if there are multiple attackers or weapons involved the best thing to do is run or flee because even if you have trained for these situations, it is still very dangerous and the odds are heavily against you.
@Vinnymanvinny1 Dude it is real simple, if I go to the ground like BJJ which 90% of BJJ is ground fighting. How hard is it for another guy to stomp my head. Now if I am using grappling technics like Aikido or Japanese Jitjitsu then I have a chnce. to win. With BJJ I have no chance. Garbage in, garbage out.
@MrStathis77 Go look up Gracie videos on youtube. They go around challenging black belt tai kwon doe, and karate fighters and completely destroy them. Jiu Jitsu fighters win 9 out of 10 of their matches.
@bobbysaysyo Those are strikers, I am talking wrestlers. Wrestlers dominate today's MMA. And if you google Catch Wrestling vs. BJJ, Catch Wrestling allways wins.
@MrStathis77 From what I saw of Catch Wrestling, it is almost identical to Jiu Jitsu. Actually, most of the moves are moves I learned in my Jiu Jitsu class. And yah take-downs are important to MMA, but Jiu Jitsu has completely revolutionized the sport. I searched Catch wrestling vs Jiu Jitsu and the only one I found that catch wrestling won was one against a gracie and he one by judge decision.
they're still the same goddamn fucking thing. they don't differ in any significant way, except maybe that brazilian jiu jitsu has more of a focus on guard, and nowadays that might not even really be true.
anything you'd learn doing catch wrestling you'd learn doing nogi bjj and vice versa man
straight wrestling vs straight jiu jitsu = bjj wins every single time, no exceptions
wrestling is probably the best base for modern mma, but wrestlers cross train in enough jiu jitsu to avoid submissions. no one in mma these days is JUST a wrestler/striker/jiu jitsu fighter
@TehPenar No not true, after the first 4 UFCs Wrestlers started to win. Then after the 10th and 11th UFC they started to mix up styles. But Wrestlers started to dominate. Frye ring a bell?
"No not true, after the first 4 UFCs Wrestlers started to win."
that's because no bjj practitioners competed in ufc 5-10, idiot.
fact: if you are a wrestler who doesn't have any experience with submissions (ie: you've never trained anything like bjj, catch-wrestling, sambo, etc) you will get fucking tooled by someone who does on the ground. this isn't really arguable
@TehPenar In Greece where BJJ is not popular. Wrestling is of course because that is were it started. I have seen BJJ guys come in and lose big time. They try to do arm locks and we pick them up and slam them. One busted his head right open and was rushed to the hospital. Why don't you go to Greece and practice your BJJ, lets see what happens. Look up Randy Couture on Wikepedia, no jiu-jitsu. MT, CW, Greco. and Boxing.
@TehPenar Then where did it start? Pankreon fighting the whole idea behind The UFC came from the Pankreon model. Where did that come from? Greece. But it is neither here nor there where it comes from. Just go and take my challenge. Better yet. Where do you live. IYou might live near me. Maybe I can show you a trick or two.
i just told you wrestling predates civilization. cavemen undoubtedly wrestled each other.
"Maybe I can show you a trick or two. "
you'd get fucking raped, youtube warrior. i could live next door to you, and you'd respond with, "darn, too bad you don't live closer. i would've kicked your ass, haha!"
why don't you tell me where YOU live and i'll steer you to some jiu jitsu guys who'd be happy to put you in your place
@TehPenar Yeah right I ask U where U live to back out. Fuck off! I live in Houston. Lets see what pussy ass U bring me. I must warn U I beaten several brown and black belts. A BJJ makes money like a whore, lying on her back with her legs open.
you probably never even wrestled anywhere outside of your backyard, and you've never even grappled a brown belt let alone beat one (MAYBE you rolled with some tool pretending to be a grappler, but i doubt even that)
@TehPenar Just like I thought nothing but a pussy! Talk is cheap. There was a challenge here at a park where some blackbelts who offered a $100 to beat if anyone could beat them.(Trying to get students) I walked away with $400. I beat all of them. I make the same offer to your pussy ass. Fagot ass fighting BJJ against my Muay Thai and Wrestling, what do U say are U man enough. I must warn U. I have a lot of street fighting experiance. So are U man enough punk?
@TehPenar Becareful who U call an idiot. I am 34 by the way. So no I don't need someone to surpervise me. At first I asked this smart ass to spare. Then he got testy and I called him out. And he did nothing. I fight for money. But beat a little shit like that I will do it for free. Make no mistake of it.
@TehPenar Yes i am and U? LIke Kimbo Slice any time any where. But how many fights U have been in? I also go to MMA gyms and challenge the master, and usually he refuses but the fools that don't they lose. Simply put, BJJ does not measure up to Catch Wrestling and it is not the same. Look up Gracie Hunter. He took all Gracies out. If you wrestled in High Scholl like U said U would know this. Even Greco-Roman is better than BJJ.
@MrStathis77 Gracie Hunter... Sakuraba. You must understand something. SAKURABA took out the GRACIES. NOT Catch Wrestling took out BJJ. Neither of these styles is better. Just different, each has their strengths and weaknesses.
@HybridDragons Really, then show me where catch wrestling loses to BJJ. Not Greco-Roman, Catch Wrestling. Catch Wrestling beats them every time. The Gracies who are suppose to be the poster boys for BJJ lost almost all matches to Sakuraba, he lost one to the younger Gracie but that was not because of grappling, he just striked him more. (Muay Thai) On the ground. Sakuraba belittled them, and not just Sakuraba, many wrestlers have dominated BJJ guys and this is confirmed by UFC comintators.
@MrStathis77 You do know that Sakuraba had been training BJJ at the time he fought the Gracies, right? Plus, Anderson Silva submitted Chael Sonnen, and he's one of the best wrestlers in MMA. What about Royce Gracie submitting Dan Severn? All fighting is a combination of style and skill, not just what you do. A technical BJJ guy against a sloppy catch wrestler will win and vice versa.
@MrStathis77 stop comparing catch to bjj. Both incorporate same techniques. BJJ is more ground oriented like De La Riva Guard, Spider Guard, X-guard.
Catch is more like freestyle wrestling mixed with BJJ but with the more practical BJJ moves such as the locks the positions and some basic sweeps. You don't see catch wrestlers pulling off inverted guard maneuvers.
@MrStathis77 If what you say so is true then I take that back. Still, the remainder of my argument persists to complete my daily fix of trollification.
@HybridDragons I agree, Sakuraba was not just a catch-wrestler, but a rather unorthodox and improvisational fighter. He went above and beyond his main style, as many fighters started to do back in early Pride days.
@SweetZombiJesus Of course. Another mistake I see people make is pigeon hole fighters into styles. Just because someone trains in BJJ doesn't mean that they will always fight in a certain way. Sakuraba fights like Sakuraba, Sonnen fights like Sonnen, Silva fights like Silva, and many fighters use the same "styles" to fight. It's that simple. MMA will evolve because of the Gracies and Sakuraba, BJJ and catch wrestling, "Styles tend to separate men" - Bruce Lee. Man was he right!
@MrStathis77 FIrst off, no one believes you, you're lying. Second, please read mrstathis77's comment again, and go get permission before i tell your mom you're online without it!
@zacktillery Really, where did I lie? I have been wrestling since I was 9. Growing up Greek you wrestle or play soccer. So where did I lie?? Don't call me a liar, when you don't know me. What attention, this little smuck was being a prick and I put him in his place. I made a few good points then he said some smart ass comments and poked at my people's history. We are the ones who started the ground game. Not the Gracies. Not Jiujitsu, not Judo. Greco-Roman has many moves. And is an art. We clear
@MrStathis77 haha nevermind i thought this was a different video. I was seriously just dabbling at the fun i could have fucking with you, but you take shit way too seriously. I wrestled for 4 years in high school too so kudos to you for doing that shit it's fucking hard.
look up randy couture? look up ANY of the current ufc champions:
jose aldo: black belt in bjj
frankie edgar: very legitimate brown belt in bjj
gsp: black belt in bjj
anderson silva: black belt in bjj
jon jones: the one real exception here: but he works a lot of submission defense as part of his mma training and has taken to jiu jitsu recently. in his last fight, he pulled guard and worked a fucking triangle.
cain valesquez: brown belt who won bjj world championships at blue
@TehPenar U don't understand the point. I am saying you can win without BJJ. Wrestling dominated the UFC for a long time, then they started to mix it up. Watch Ultimate Gracie, they talk about The UFC early begining.
the early ufcs were totally dominated by royce, despite royce being undersized. other people didn't start winning until he left the promotion. wrestling is great man - but you'd better know enough submission grappling to avoid being subbed or going to ground is suicide
@TehPenar Yeah but there were other Jiu-jitsu guys who came in after Gracie and they lost to wrestlers. Nobody knew Gracie's jiujitsu after watching how he worked they caught on quickly and started to beat jiujitsu guys. Then after a few more UFCs they started to mix it up.
@Fatman116 Your right, Jujutsu has amazing power, but I'll stick with traditional Jujutsu. Royce was defeated by a Judoka, Gracie Jujutsu is good, but not invinible.
@natedogg58341 Exactly, Wrestlers have dominated the last few years in the UFC. They even discuss this on youtube, Baus is one of the speaker guest on this.
@Fatman116 they hate on the gracies because they simply dumb as doo doo and some people don't respect history unless it features THEM at the reigns leading the way.
FACT is the gracies started the organization in the U.S. the brazilian influence ALSO shaped the MMA you see today. for the 13 to 30 yr olds that don't know or that don't know how to investigate a little...MMA today was nowhere to be found 20-30 years ago. shit, our damn fathers were practicing karate at the YMCA.
@Fatman116 2cont. that was the fight game BEFORE the gracies/brazilian influence. just learning kata and sparring is what we were doing.
a lot of young american fans also don't know that the brazilians were fighting like the mma you see today some damn 20-30 years ago in the 70's. just no gloves and short, shorts. lol! it's called VALE TUDO idiots.
...and if you did any research, you would already see examples of this style being taught and developing for the american.
@Fatman116 3cont. pedro rizzo, marco ruas...were great examples of guys ALREADY showing us the mma today some 10-15 years ago.
wrestling is a great style, but the american didn't invent that either. a lot of states, players, fans pride themselves on wrestling like brazilians with bjj. that's perfectly fine...but understand this...wrestling at it's core is about control and win by pinning your opponent. how does this translate into mma?
@Fatman116 4. you can count on your hand the number of wrestlers that held a belt in ufc.
AND I DON'T MEAN A GUY THAT WRESTLED IN HS or COLLEGE, BUT FINISHES HIS FIGHTS BY STRIKING.
the gracies and brazilians should be respected for many reasons including historical ones as it relates to this sort. i mean the japanese don't spit on the history behind baseball...they just love the sport.
oh well, some people just lack the ability to respect anything. shit, even ken shamrock...
in my city, sometimes the dojos get together and everybody spars against each other. depends on the day, how dedicated the students are. depends on whats happening in the fight to. Karateka's, kickboxers always dance around, striking here and there, sometimes doing damage, but never ending a fight. what ends the fight is the grappling. there were only 2 black belt judoka that ever did alright, outa 10 otherwise it was the greco wrestlers, to much force. jujitsu students never" did good.
I don't know why there's always arguments. I think at this point both BJJ and wrestling have proven themselves to both be equally great, and necessary arts. As far as which wins - it usually just comes down to experience and athleticism.
@Bigbriansc I agree, you see people are like sheep and flock to wghatever they think is socially ideal. Right now its jujitsu. I am learning wing chung (Ip Man llineage) and someday aim at learning catch wrestling too.
first of all, HOP OFF MY JOCK!!!, secondly all i was trying to say was that the video is trying to make it look like a big deal that a jiu jitsu guy beat an olympic wrestler, obvioulsy Gracie won off of a jiu jitsu move, and yes it is MMA, but if the olympic wrestler could win by a pin, then he would have won as soon as Royler got on his back, so if the rules consisted of wrestling, which they were trying to point out Royler beat one, then the Olympic Wrestler would have won
@cdawson45 I have to say you are right about the rules deal and I have to say that is a wrong idea to try to compair two diferent styles because are not the same thing... two guys from the same style could be, but at less in MMA Royler were the best
This is obviously one of the first mma fights, back when it was mostly 1 style vs 1 style. Now things are way diferent, mma fighters train in multiple styles. That is why a well rounded mma fighter will allways take the cake in a plain fight against anybody whos really good in just 1 style.
@specialforces69 But in the end i would say cause they teach control and there cardio and strenght his alot higher then others.Bjj and striking art dont teach control and i feel in a fight if you know how to control your opp. Then all doors are open for what you would like to do.Also if a wrestler learns basic bjj defence it helps.
@specialforces69 So a freestyle and grecco wrestler will go flat and stall on ther belly just wating to get stood up.And as far as punching on the ground well thats all instinct ground in pound.A pure striker has no chance agianst a ground guy.The only one with a shot is a bjj but bjj takedowns are realy bad and there takedown def. is realy bad,There also tought to work from there back wich isnt good so most of time a bjj guy will look for a triangle or arm bar from gaurd.
@specialforces69 Well the way a collegiate wrestler trains is alot more intense then other there cardio and strenght is through the roof. And collegiate wrestling teaches to control your person and to never be in a bad potion and unlike freestyle and grecco Collegiate teaches and allows people to work from there back it teaches you to base up and get to your feet .Grecco and freestyle doesnt give points for getting up to neutral potion.
@specialforces69 I think if everbody was same size strenght cardio and all physiclly was equal.I think collegiate wrestling is the pound for pound best art.But thats just my opinion. Its best to know more then one art but i feal art vs art collegiate is best.
@specialforces69 Go watch Brock lesnars first fight brock was a ncaa div.1 hw champ he fought a judo silver medlist and beat him bad Also watch Gardner a Grecco gold medlist beat a judo medlist as well.
@specialforces69 Not just whats style of art you know decides who wins a fight ,Also what matters is cardio strenght heart size so there is more then one facter on what determines who will win a fight thats why in mma people from all arts do well..
@specialforces69 Dumbass, I'm simply trying to tell you that a wrestler would kill a BJJ guy in a streetfight. I'm not a highschool wrestler and I do Muay Thai aswell. and No I don't wish my standup was like Shogun's, I wish my standup was like a K1 fighter like Overeem,Badr Hari,Gokhan Saki ........ Good for you that you train there and good for you that you that your doing Muay Thai but personally I don't give a shit where or what you train.
@specialforces69 WTF are you talking about ?!? Do you even remember what you 1st said ? Let me quote it for you, you dumbfuck. > "But Jujitsu will always win against Wrestling in a fight to the death." < I was just replying to your fuckin stupid comment saying Wrestling would beat BJJ in a streetfight. I don't do highschool wrestling and I actually do Muay Thai . I don't like Wrestling but I'm not fuckin stupid and I understand that in a real fight a wrestlers breaking your back.....
@specialforces69 You faggot, you said BJJ always beats Wrestling in a fight to the death, you didn't say BJJ beats "untrained" opponents to the death. I replied a Wrestler would break a BJJ guys back with a slam and your trying to reply with all this BS, writing up your life story. GTFO you fat fuck.
No, Jiu Jitsu guys don't have backs made of steel, one slam on concrete and your dead or paralyzed but I agree a fight to the death on sports mats, BJJ wins.
@ShogunRuaFights bro, let me drop a little knowlege on u. Sport bjj is designed for mats, yes. Gjj, which has a much stronger emphasis on self defense and street wise fighting style, isn't sport bjj. the techniques are altered for street combat. and if you are dumb enough to quickly pull guard on a rough concrete sidewalk than you deserve to get slammed.
@Spdrcrfatty Firstly STFU, Secondly you don't need to educate me on anything because that retard who said BJJ always beats wrestling in a fight to the death. A wrestler in a streetfight would put a BJJ guy on his back so fast and so hard and would break his back. Then try going for an armbar or triangle and see if you don't get paralyzed with a slam on concrete. Have you seen Rampage vs Arona ? Yh, Imagine that on concrete faggot, your dead.
@ShogunRuaFights again, thanks for proving my point genius. i've seen rampage vs arona and he got slammed cause he pulled guard - on a mat!!! like i said, any1 dumb enough to pull guard on a rough concrete surface is going to get slammed. but gjj allows for several techniques to avoid the takedown. wrestlers aren't all that.

@jervoskitzin Their style wasn't meant to fight in a cage with. Its effective in a street fight.
CannedKoolaid 1 month ago
@CannedKoolaid Actually, moving around on the floor during a street-fight while someone is on top of you, in your guard, is not advised. The hardness of concrete can really hamper you. I think BJJ is at its best as a competitive sport, which with MMA, it has really exploded in popularity, as we all know :)

The only problem I have with Royce is how he constantly lays on his back like a turtle that can't get up. And it's not even accidental. He does it on purpose. It's as if he still thinks nobody else knows what he is going to do. That's a bad habit in my book, even tho my book is old and dusty.

good thing biting isn't allowed...eye gouging, too. if so, i think the grappling dominance factor would somewhat be diminished. but a good sport to watch all the same.
vinnynumbnuts 3 months ago
@vinnynumbnuts The thing is when you say if eye gouging and biting were allowed it would diminish BJJ, you have to remember the BJJ can do that to; it doesnt go one way. I would rather be in a good position when I am doing that sort of thing.
joebeast15 3 months ago
@joebeast15 yes, i see what you're saying. it's just that in my mind, if one is on the ground with someone who's just taken a chunk out of his leg and is going for more, the natural reaction would be to get away from such a biter. i remember Enter The Dragon where roper is caught in an arm bar, and he reacts by biting bolo's leg, making bolo let go to get away from him. bruce lee, who really trained for street fighting, was a big fan of biting & eye gouging. i think grappling is hindered a bit
vinnynumbnuts 3 months ago
Yea if you get yourself in that leg lock there really is no good way out. Your arms cant push the legs off cause they cant bend that way and the legs over lapped so u cant push out.

@rangedat
As for the Bravo vs Royler rematch, Royler has still been competing where as Bravo has not competed since the ADCC 2003 tournament
theGroveMan 4 months ago
@theGroveMan i realize how much the Gracies have done, but trying to make another person look like a bitch when he was the one who backed out is truly disgracing. And i said nothing about eddie bravo beating royler at ADCC, so i don't see what him losing to Vieira has anything to do with it.
rangedat 4 months ago
@rangedat
His whole success is that and nothing more.
theGroveMan 4 months ago
@theGroveMan Eddie challenged Royler to another grappling match, Royler declined and insisted that eddie pay him an extreme amount of money. Of course eddie had to decline because of the stupid conditions, so royler said he was the one who declined. PUSSY MOVE
As far as his accolades, eddie bravo has brought brazilian jiu jitsu to new heights with his system
rangedat 4 months ago

Depends on what the black belt has a black belt in.
Could be a MT fighter (GREAT for streetfights) or a boxer and BJJ guy. A VERY nasty combination for streetfighting.
Mattixxg 4 months ago
@Mattixxg Indeed, MT or box/BJJ are excellent. But I'm talking about the person. There are good and bad fighters in every style. I find it irritating that a traditional karate-ka who's done years of kata and dojo competition could think he could walk into a cage and win. Wing Chun Kung Fu is another. Very effective against Mr. Normal. But against a seasoned fighter....?

The Gracies have unquestionably made a profound and lasting contribution to grappling... but they did this through the search of continuous simplicity and effectiveness of something that already existed (judo). To think that what they have created is perfect and finished would be just plain stupid. There will be further innovation, there will be further improvement. It would be smart to acknowledge that submission wrestlers are now breaking some ground and start learning from them!

alpjits 7 months ago
@alpjits Yap, more and more wrestlers find a way to defeat BJJ players. Look at Munoz's last fight. Yes, he had to have submission defense training but he completely out grappled a legit bjj grappler in his last fight. BJJ guys need to learn wrestling or Judo in order to take the fight to the ground. How can you use BJJ if you can't take the fight to the ground. Recent example: Werdum VS Overeem.
pcjudosambo 7 months ago
all of you who hate on the gracies and brazilian jiu jitsu have obviously never engaged a real jiu jitsu player. you would know the truth. "wrestling beats this and this beats that" means NOTHING if you don't actually train (ie: most of you guys). keep hiding behind those keyboards.

MrStathis77 5 months ago
@MrStathis77 *sigh* You're clearly poorly informed. BJJ is judo with the ideal of leverage in mind. NO martial artist can EASILY defeat multiple attackers, this isn't a Steven Segal movie. In the case of meeting multiple attackers, which was obviously thought of when the creator was in the process of developing jiu jitsu, there are techniques and strategy to protecting yourself, not instantaneously knocking everyone out 1 by one.(Completely unrealistic)
Govegeda 5 months ago
@Govegeda Dude it is real simple, if I go to the ground like BJJ which 90% of BJJ is ground fighting. How hard is it for another guy to stomp my head. Now if I am using grappling technics like Aikido or Japanese Jitjitsu then I have a chnce. to win. With BJJ I have no chance. Garbage in, garbage out.
MrStathis77 3 months ago
@MrStathis77 You cannot generalize an entire martial art in one paragraph. Genuine jiu jitsu, gracie jiu jitsu, if you ever payed attention, employs clinching and neutralizing striking, nobody is the last fuckin samurai and will easily takedown 3 attackers. And for the last time, that garbage you watch on T.V. is NOT jiu jitsu but a watered down knock off. Jiu jitsu comes from kano-judo, wait- you don't care. All you've ever seen from jiu jitsu is the guard which is used less than side control.
Govegeda 3 months ago
@Govegeda Wait a minute partner, How do U know what I have seen? I have a friend who is a 2nd degree black belt in Japanese Jiujitsu. I seen him fight. He goes all ways. So I think it is best you think before you talk.
MrStathis77 3 months ago
@MrStathis77 I judged you based on your comments, which you made it apparent that all you highlighted was ground game, ignoring weapon defenses, pin defenses, "street move" and commoner technique defense, strike defenses, etc.. Also, any proven martial art should prove you use in a street fight, but Japenese Jiu Jitsu is a barebones version of BJJ, your argument is irrelevant.
Govegeda 3 months ago
@Govegeda Really is that so? then why is it in The Marine Corp. They added Japanese Jiujitsu not BJJ? If BJJ was so effective then why did the Marines who are the top line who are trained to kill, why they don't use it in their training. TKD was used 20 years ago, they took that shit out because it does not really help you. It is more like Fencing (An Art) Jiujitsu and Muay Thai, Aikido, Judo, are taught in The Marine Corp because they get straight to the point and it is more useful IN A FIGHT.
MrStathis77 3 months ago
@MrStathis77 And no "dude" Your opponent can be used as a shield from the bottom position in such cases. Japenese "Jujutsu"(u said it wrong "dude") or Kano-Judo, was taught to the gracies and a much frailer, weaker, Helio Gracie redesigned moves to use more leverage to take down the opponent in a more efficient way. Your mentioned martial arts are defunct and are crippled by their commitment to tradition over evolution, which BJJ is always doing(people seem so unaware of this)

MrStathis77 3 months ago
@MrStathis77 I agree with Govegeda, there is no simple way or style to take on multiple attackers. Whether u use Judo, MT, BJJ, Wrestling, etc, there is no such thing as a simple way to beat multiple attackers. Even in Krav Maga they teach that if there are multiple attackers or weapons involved the best thing to do is run or flee because even if you have trained for these situations, it is still very dangerous and the odds are heavily against you.

A technical BJJ guy against a sloppy catch wrestler will win and vice versa.
xbm 1 month ago in playlist MMA fights
@MrStathis77 stop comparing catch to bjj. Both incorporate same techniques. BJJ is more ground oriented like De La Riva Guard, Spider Guard, X-guard.
Catch is more like freestyle wrestling mixed with BJJ but with the more practical BJJ moves such as the locks the positions and some basic sweeps. You don't see catch wrestlers pulling off inverted guard maneuvers.

@HybridDragons I agree, Sakuraba was not just a catch-wrestler, but a rather unorthodox and improvisational fighter. He went above and beyond his main style, as many fighters started to do back in early Pride days.
SweetZombiJesus 1 month ago
@SweetZombiJesus Of course. Another mistake I see people make is pigeon hole fighters into styles. Just because someone trains in BJJ doesn't mean that they will always fight in a certain way. Sakuraba fights like Sakuraba, Sonnen fights like Sonnen, Silva fights like Silva, and many fighters use the same "styles" to fight. It's that simple. MMA will evolve because of the Gracies and Sakuraba, BJJ and catch wrestling, "Styles tend to separate men" - Bruce Lee. Man was he right!

@MrStathis77 Then act like it, and quit lying on the internet for obvious strides of attention seeking behavior.
zacktillery 3 months ago
@zacktillery Really, where did I lie? I have been wrestling since I was 9. Growing up Greek you wrestle or play soccer. So where did I lie?? Don't call me a liar, when you don't know me. What attention, this little smuck was being a prick and I put him in his place. I made a few good points then he said some smart ass comments and poked at my people's history. We are the ones who started the ground game. Not the Gracies. Not Jiujitsu, not Judo. Greco-Roman has many moves. And is an art. We clear
MrStathis77 3 months ago
@MrStathis77 haha nevermind i thought this was a different video. I was seriously just dabbling at the fun i could have fucking with you, but you take shit way too seriously. I wrestled for 4 years in high school too so kudos to you for doing that shit it's fucking hard.

@MrStathis77
look up randy couture? look up ANY of the current ufc champions:
jose aldo: black belt in bjj
frankie edgar: very legitimate brown belt in bjj
gsp: black belt in bjj
anderson silva: black belt in bjj
jon jones: the one real exception here: but he works a lot of submission defense as part of his mma training and has taken to jiu jitsu recently. in his last fight, he pulled guard and worked a fucking triangle.
cain valesquez: brown belt who won bjj world championships at blue
TehPenar 3 months ago
@TehPenar U don't understand the point. I am saying you can win without BJJ. Wrestling dominated the UFC for a long time, then they started to mix it up. Watch Ultimate Gracie, they talk about The UFC early begining.
MrStathis77 3 months ago
@MrStathis77
the early ufcs were totally dominated by royce, despite royce being undersized. other people didn't start winning until he left the promotion. wrestling is great man - but you'd better know enough submission grappling to avoid being subbed or going to ground is suicide
TehPenar 3 months ago
@TehPenar Yeah but there were other Jiu-jitsu guys who came in after Gracie and they lost to wrestlers. Nobody knew Gracie's jiujitsu after watching how he worked they caught on quickly and started to beat jiujitsu guys. Then after a few more UFCs they started to mix it up.

@Fatman116 Your right, Jujutsu has amazing power, but I'll stick with traditional Jujutsu. Royce was defeated by a Judoka, Gracie Jujutsu is good, but not invinible.

BoneCrusherJiuJitsu 3 months ago
@natedogg58341 Exactly, Wrestlers have dominated the last few years in the UFC. They even discuss this on youtube, Baus is one of the speaker guest on this.
MrStathis77 3 months ago
@Fatman116 they hate on the gracies because they simply dumb as doo doo and some people don't respect history unless it features THEM at the reigns leading the way.
FACT is the gracies started the organization in the U.S. the brazilian influence ALSO shaped the MMA you see today. for the 13 to 30 yr olds that don't know or that don't know how to investigate a little...MMA today was nowhere to be found 20-30 years ago. shit, our damn fathers were practicing karate at the YMCA.
heykevinb 3 months ago
@Fatman116 2cont. that was the fight game BEFORE the gracies/brazilian influence. just learning kata and sparring is what we were doing.
a lot of young american fans also don't know that the brazilians were fighting like the mma you see today some damn 20-30 years ago in the 70's. just no gloves and short, shorts. lol! it's called VALE TUDO idiots.
...and if you did any research, you would already see examples of this style being taught and developing for the american.
heykevinb 3 months ago
@Fatman116 3cont. pedro rizzo, marco ruas...were great examples of guys ALREADY showing us the mma today some 10-15 years ago.
wrestling is a great style, but the american didn't invent that either. a lot of states, players, fans pride themselves on wrestling like brazilians with bjj. that's perfectly fine...but understand this...wrestling at it's core is about control and win by pinning your opponent. how does this translate into mma?
you can count on your hand...
heykevinb 3 months ago
@Fatman116 4. you can count on your hand the number of wrestlers that held a belt in ufc.
AND I DON'T MEAN A GUY THAT WRESTLED IN HS or COLLEGE, BUT FINISHES HIS FIGHTS BY STRIKING.
the gracies and brazilians should be respected for many reasons including historical ones as it relates to this sort. i mean the japanese don't spit on the history behind baseball...they just love the sport.
oh well, some people just lack the ability to respect anything. shit, even ken shamrock...
heykevinb 3 months ago
@Fatman116 5cont. shit, even ken shamrock respects learning pancrase in japan...same thing for josh barnett
the gracies are great and have done some very important things for MMA TODAY.
heykevinb 3 months ago
@Fatman116 Never trained with an actual gracie before, but I have trained with Fabio Santos.

Manther2012 8 months ago
in my city, sometimes the dojos get together and everybody spars against each other. depends on the day, how dedicated the students are. depends on whats happening in the fight to.
8520rah 8 months ago
I don't know why there's always arguments. I think at this point both BJJ and wrestling have proven themselves to both be equally great, and necessary arts. As far as which wins - it usually just comes down to experience and athleticism.

@Bigbriansc But then Royce beat Sakuraba.
So what is that saying?
And Ralek Gracie also beat Sakuraba.
Why the hate for the Gracies?
SkemeKOS 8 months ago
first of all, HOP OFF MY JOCK!!!, secondly all i was trying to say was that the video is trying to make it look like a big deal that a jiu jitsu guy beat an olympic wrestler, obvioulsy Gracie won off of a jiu jitsu move, and yes it is MMA, but if the olympic wrestler could win by a pin, then he would have won as soon as Royler got on his back, so if the rules consisted of wrestling, which they were trying to point out Royler beat one, then the Olympic Wrestler would have won
cdawson45 10 months ago
@cdawson45 I have to say you are right about the rules deal and I have to say that is a wrong idea to try to compair two diferent styles because are not the same thing... two guys from the same style could be, but at less in MMA Royler were the best
saxcutaoo 9 months ago
Who is Royler Fighting??
GableHawk 10 months ago
Re: all the arguing comments.
This is obviously one of the first mma fights, back when it was mostly 1 style vs 1 style. Now things are way diferent, mma fighters train in multiple styles. That is why a well rounded mma fighter will allways take the cake in a plain fight against anybody whos really good in just 1 style.
boxero12rds 10 months ago
the wrestler obviously didn't know bjj, he GAVE him the submission
mroktober18 10 months ago
@specialforces69 But in the end i would say cause they teach control and there cardio and strenght his alot higher then others.Bjj and striking art dont teach control and i feel in a fight if you know how to control your opp. Then all doors are open for what you would like to do.Also if a wrestler learns basic bjj defence it helps.
callofdutymw2geek 11 months ago
@specialforces69 So a freestyle and grecco wrestler will go flat and stall on ther belly just wating to get stood up.And as far as punching on the ground well thats all instinct ground in pound.A pure striker has no chance agianst a ground guy.The only one with a shot is a bjj but bjj takedowns are realy bad and there takedown def. is realy bad,There also tought to work from there back wich isnt good so most of time a bjj guy will look for a triangle or arm bar from gaurd.
callofdutymw2geek 11 months ago
@specialforces69 Well the way a collegiate wrestler trains is alot more intense then other there cardio and strenght is through the roof. And collegiate wrestling teaches to control your person and to never be in a bad potion and unlike freestyle and grecco Collegiate teaches and allows people to work from there back it teaches you to base up and get to your feet .Grecco and freestyle doesnt give points for getting up to neutral potion.
callofdutymw2geek 11 months ago
@specialforces69 I think if everbody was same size strenght cardio and all physiclly was equal.I think collegiate wrestling is the pound for pound best art.But thats just my opinion. Its best to know more then one art but i feal art vs art collegiate is best.
callofdutymw2geek 11 months ago
@specialforces69 Go watch Brock lesnars first fight brock was a ncaa div.1 hw champ he fought a judo silver medlist and beat him bad Also watch Gardner a Grecco gold medlist beat a judo medlist as well.
callofdutymw2geek 11 months ago
@specialforces69 Not just whats style of art you know decides who wins a fight ,Also what matters is cardio strenght heart size so there is more then one facter on what determines who will win a fight thats why in mma people from all arts do well..
callofdutymw2geek 11 months ago

ShogunRuaFights 11 months ago
@specialforces69 You faggot, you said BJJ always beats Wrestling in a fight to the death, you didn't say BJJ beats "untrained" opponents to the death. I replied a Wrestler would break a BJJ guys back with a slam and your trying to reply with all this BS, writing up your life story. GTFO you fat fuck.
ShogunRuaFights 11 months ago
@specialforces69
No, Jiu Jitsu guys don't have backs made of steel, one slam on concrete and your dead or paralyzed but I agree a fight to the death on sports mats, BJJ wins.
ShogunRuaFights 11 months ago
@ShogunRuaFights bro, let me drop a little knowlege on u. Sport bjj is designed for mats, yes. Gjj, which has a much stronger emphasis on self defense and street wise fighting style, isn't sport bjj. the techniques are altered for street combat. and if you are dumb enough to quickly pull guard on a rough concrete sidewalk than you deserve to get slammed.
Spdrcrfatty 11 months ago
@Spdrcrfatty Firstly STFU, Secondly you don't need to educate me on anything because that retard who said BJJ always beats wrestling in a fight to the death. A wrestler in a streetfight would put a BJJ guy on his back so fast and so hard and would break his back. Then try going for an armbar or triangle and see if you don't get paralyzed with a slam on concrete. Have you seen Rampage vs Arona ? Yh, Imagine that on concrete faggot, your dead.
ShogunRuaFights 11 months ago
@ShogunRuaFights again, thanks for proving my point genius. i've seen rampage vs arona and he got slammed cause he pulled guard - on a mat!!! like i said, any1 dumb enough to pull guard on a rough concrete surface is going to get slammed. but gjj allows for several techniques to avoid the takedown. wrestlers aren't all that.
Spdrcrfatty 11 months ago
