I plan on hiking it before I join the Peace Corps after college.
My boyfriend and I are planning on getting married in secret so that we can go overseas together-for the sake of our relationship as well as safety. I think hiking the Appalachian Trail would be the perfect kick-off since we could plan it for the year before we leave, and we wouldn't have to worry about job issues. What a perfect thing to do once we quit our burger pedaling jobs for fast food joints.
@lisaelledge One site says better to start from GA. Thinking on it for next year as this year is too late (to start from south) and probably takes a year to research and so on. Good luck to you. See u there!
@johncfl Not sure of exact numbers but most trhu hikers start from GA. You start at the tail end of winter, early spring, then hike through the spring, summer, and into fall. Hopefully you finish before it gets too cold in Maine, NH. Even so, you are in the best condition to handle that just in case. The other way (ME->GA) you'd start weak in rough conditions in the summer. Hike all summer and finish nearly in winter in GA. the whole time, you'd see fewer fellow hikers.
Back 20 years ago... my high school buddies and I had a plan to hike 30 days from Springer. The 4 of us started early one morning and after 13 miles on day one... our leader and the only one of us with A.T. experience... broke his leg in an attempt to avoid a snake. So we had to turn back. Our leader died the next year in Iraq ... we never attempted the A.T. again.
@label1877 Sorry for your loss, yet the challenge still remains to thru hike it. My Dad once asked me a rhetorical question, " Son, do you know what the most expensive thing is in life?...regret,...regret is the most expensive thing ever". Don't let that happen to you. Go backl out there and in the words of Larry The Cable Guy "Get er done!"
Cool video of the AT been there many times in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Stayed at most of the shelters there, Davenport Gap, Cosby Knob, Icewater Spring, Kepart, Mount Collins, Silers Bald, Mollies Ridge and many other shelters in the Smoky's...

@dasadopeboy Just thinking on it. Wonder about GPS or smart phone/computer, except for keeping weight down. Camera a must but same weight issue. And cost.
@johncfl GPS not necessary. After a while you get very good at following the white blazes. Some don't even carry maps after a while. One book that is very complete gives you nearly everything you need detail wise regarding the trail making a GPS not necessary.

@zkiltez22 He used a "Soda Can Stove" (google it), literally two ends of soda cans compressed together with some holes in it. The fuel was HEET (yellow bottle), a commercial Methyl alcohol sold over many parts of the trail. Its actually an automotive product but onw ounce in a soda burner will boil water in about 15 mintues and it's amazingly lightweight.
The second time he hiked he used compressed gas canisters because he was cooking for two.
Really great video. Very Inspiring. I've watched a lot of videos of thru-hikes of the AT and PCT but I really enjoyed yours. I am planning a thru-hike in the coming years because I am losing my vision and a thru-hike of the AT is on what I call my "White Cane List." Thanks for this wonderful video.
@camelwalker23 there was actually a Blind AT thru hiker in 1990. His name is Bill Irwin and he wrote a book called Blind Courage. I've not read it and do not know much beyond the fact that he accomplished it, but you might enjoy the story. Here's wishing you the best.
I can understand why you are called "Old Goat" - you hiked the Trail with 0 mile days! That is not easy, even most young guys can't do that. Great job Old Goat.
just asked my parents if i could defer from college for a year to hike the AT. i'm 18 and a girl; my mom thinks i need someone to accompany me who is handy with his fists to protect me. thanks for the video to keep me inspired :)
behind my nieghbor hood we have a 3,000 acre hiking range theres waterfalls and blossom trees i should take my cam with me!!ol im the only person who knows about it
that is a great slideshow, beautiful,. me and my friend jami are planning a thru hike starting in maine heading south to georgia.time is drawing near only about 2 months to go ,i cant wait ive spoke to many people that say you dont look at the world the same way after and its something you,ll alwayz remember, see you on the Trail.
I'm 16 and i'm really considering hiking the AT, not right now but in the near future like after high school. Any tips, suggestions,or comments? I'm a boy scout, i play hockey, i go hunting and fishing and love the outdoors so I think I would be able to do it both physically and mentally.
do it. I'm 21 i did it when I was 20 this last summer in 4 months. im an eagle scout as well. its all in your head man. you'll meet friends for life, see crazy people, beautiful places, have shitty days where you want to die, but the end is soooo worth it and you will look back on it the rest of your life! - "The Kid" -NOBO-09
Shelters are free and mail drop offs are misc supplies that someone mails for you. These packages arrive at post offices or business a few days before you arrive.
Fantastic Video, Never heard of the Trail up until I started reading Bryson's 'A Walk in the Woods'
Sounds a fantastic place and thanks to you I can now put the images to the words. Would love one day to head over to the US and try this trail myself.
this is a life goal of mine. but i need to go camping in the rain sometime so i can be a little more prepared. ive been out in 18*F and snow on the ground but never the rain.
I have wanted to hike the trail since I was in 6th grade when my neighbor who I looked up did it his senior year of highschool graduating early just to do.
Every time I drive by the Masspike bridge of the trail I am reminded I need to get myself in gear and on the trail
Mail drops are prepared meal packets in about a weeks worth increments. You have someone mail them to you and pick them up at post offices. Within is you food for about a week. That's how Old Goat did it.
I am awed. Good job! I have hiked a number of the Virginia parts with my two dogs and recognized the pictures ..fondly. Would love to thru hike but still wary being a single hiker (even with dogs).
Most hikers stop about once a week in a hostel or hotel. So there you could charge phones etc. And yes, nearly every hiker has a cell phone, although it's off most of the time to save the battery. Verizon seems to have the best reception as of 2009.
Great video! I remember all of those spots and the entire state of Vermont was rain and muddy trails. Kinda like a river, 2ft wide 2,178 miles long haha
just finished a thru hike on the AT and it was the most eye-opening adventure . What a great time! Trail life is the best life!
@pillar222 Hey, im the same age and have the same dream...I plan on reading up and doing some section hiking to prepare, and can NOT wait, it'd be such an amazing experience 8]
Good video. I didn't know Pine Grove Furnace is the half-way point. That's really close to me, and so far I've hiked Duncanon to Center Knob Point (near Boiling Springs). Hope to hike more.
XaviersSecretary: I section hiked with my dog (about 170 miles) and it was so much better that way. She smelled out a wild boar along the trail (in NC). Wouldn't have seen it otherwise since it blended in with the brown leaves while foraging. My dog--Polenka--handled it very well, respected the boar and didn't disturb it. Many more experiences like that hiking throughout U.S. with her. Wished I'd have had Polenka on the AT thru-hike (GA-ME 2/4-6/18/01).

Hey good job and what kind of stove/fuel did you use?
zkiltez22 1 year ago

I am planning a thru-hike in the coming years because I am losing my vision and a thru-hike of the AT is on what I call my "White Cane List." Thanks for this wonderful video.
camelwalker23 1 year ago 12

How do you afford to take a whole year off work? I would love to go - but just don't see the financial possibility?
wesarnold1 1 year ago
@wesarnold1 He had just retired. There are many Late 50's+, and 60 year old thru hikers.

I'm 16 and i'm really considering hiking the AT, not right now but in the near future like after high school. Any tips, suggestions,or comments? I'm a boy scout, i play hockey, i go hunting and fishing and love the outdoors so I think I would be able to do it both physically and mentally.
mianus11 1 year ago

Thanks for the video!

I like how you have a boy scout popcorn box in the first picture of your food drops. Are you a scout master or just avid popcorn consumer?

Fantastic Video, Never heard of the Trail up until I started reading Bryson's 'A Walk in the Woods'
Sounds a fantastic place and thanks to you I can now put the images to the words. Would love one day to head over to the US and try this trail myself.
Congrats.

I have wanted to hike the trail since I was in 6th grade when my neighbor who I looked up did it his senior year of highschool graduating early just to do.
Every time I drive by the Masspike bridge of the trail I am reminded I need to get myself in gear and on the trail

what do you do for food?
GSRGOPEDRIDER247 2 years ago
Mail drops are prepared meal packets in about a weeks worth increments. You have someone mail them to you and pick them up at post offices. Within is you food for about a week. That's how Old Goat did it.

I am awed. Good job! I have hiked a number of the Virginia parts with my two dogs and recognized the pictures ..fondly. Would love to thru hike but still wary being a single hiker (even with dogs).
mhitesman 2 years ago
Most people hiking the AT start off solo but meet others quickly. From there you can hike alone or not, your choice dependent on who you meet.

Is there electricity in the shelters to recharge my cell phone?
uselessjoe 2 years ago
Ummm that would be a no. In fact even bring your cell phone is considered "taboo" on the AT.
shawnr1980 2 years ago
Most hikers stop about once a week in a hostel or hotel. So there you could charge phones etc. And yes, nearly every hiker has a cell phone, although it's off most of the time to save the battery. Verizon seems to have the best reception as of 2009.

Great video! I remember all of those spots and the entire state of Vermont was rain and muddy trails. Kinda like a river, 2ft wide 2,178 miles long haha
