  • what state was the snake in?

  • The music really kills it. Audioswap?

  • Thanks for sharing! Hiking the AT is a dream of mine as well :)

  • Nice video, but I can't even finish watching it because the music is killing me.

  • Congrats!!!

  • Glad you got to follow your dream! nice video

  • Nice job - inspiring video. Congrats on the thru. My turn next.

  • @HPT33216 When do you think of doing this journey? I'm going to do next year probably August September October

  • The tent is a one person Eureka Spitfire. I was very comfortable in it in all weather, I'm 5'6" tall. It does not have a vestibule for equipment but the side door was a big plus.

For all those music critics...The song was getting a lot of air time in 2006. I hiked listening to a Sony Walkman radio a lot. The line "Feel the rain on your face" would come on as I hiked in the rain and I would think "How appropriate".

  • Was that your Eureka tent? If so did you like it?

  • What a beautiful video, looks like such an epic adventure!!

  • Cool man. Good job.

  • Perfect timing for an expression like this. I agree with you totally and truthfully.

  • This movie, however well intended, utterly destroys everything. Are you serieus? You got THAT music? :D

  • watching these videos is torture, i'm north bound in febuary...just wanna go ahead and leaveeeee

  • @aduggar58 best of luck to you. take it slow and enjoy your hike -- its not a race. take pictures of other hikers instead of mountains. you'll cherish them much much more. :) -Caveman GA>ME 2010

  • I wish you had "Bad Moon Risin'" by CCR playing instead of the song you played, but, darnit, congratulations. You deserve all the transcendence you got.

  • oh goodness, what i would do to see that view at 0:52

  • Just dropping in to remind you how much I still hate your choice of song. Woosie.

  • @gregorybrandt - spend half a year away from your computer, away from your xbox, away from your comfortable life... doing what Old Goat, myself, and many others have done, then watch it again. The song will have new meaning.

  • awsome video i hiked that trail before it was fun

  • Wow. I can't get over why you chose such a horrible song. I thought about it for a couple hours today. I hope your a chic.

  • It felt as if I was there thank you

  • Thanks for sharing the gorgeous photography. It's June in Yosemite National Park and that means Hiking time. Check out our Yosemitevacations channel name below /

  • you sure picked a gay song for your video. I hope your a chic.

  • @gregorybrandt Why is it that you feel the need to post the same stupid comment numerous times? I just don't get it...post your BS once and move on.

  • Awesome. You could see the change, not just in his body, but his eyes too!

I'm envious but not for long!

  • lol music

  • Great video, thanks for sharing your adventure.

  • how long does it take roughly (days)?

  • Beautiful video. Congratulations on completing it the entire trail. I'm hiking Wayah Bald NC to Fontana next week. LOVE the big trail.

  • Gotta say that I love this overview -- wonderful video journal -- thanks soooo much Old Goat. It's on my mind for 3-12

    AT Hike: 3-15-06 to 8-28-06

    167 days (152 hiking, 15 stationary):

    0:05 map 2,175 miles

  • The video stops @ :48 seconds for me, come to my channel and let me know if i can view or download this anywhere else? Thanks!

  • i would love to do it but my gut says otherwise

  • This video is SO inspiring!! The footage goes so well with the words!!

  • I plan on hiking it before I join the Peace Corps after college.

My boyfriend and I are planning on getting married in secret so that we can go overseas together-for the sake of our relationship as well as safety. I think hiking the Appalachian Trail would be the perfect kick-off since we could plan it for the year before we leave, and we wouldn't have to worry about job issues. What a perfect thing to do once we quit our burger pedaling jobs for fast food joints.

  • Great video! I just finished a section hike last weekend from three forks to neels gap. Which it were longer!

  • I LOVE THAT AT THE END!!!!!

"YOU DONT GET OLD BY DOING, YOU GET OLD BY NOT DOING"

thank you for this sooo much. I plan on doing a thru hike in March 2012. starting at Maine (if that is a good idea).

  • @lisaelledge One site says better to start from GA. Thinking on it for next year as this year is too late (to start from south) and probably takes a year to research and so on. Good luck to you. See u there!

  • @johncfl Not sure of exact numbers but most trhu hikers start from GA. You start at the tail end of winter, early spring, then hike through the spring, summer, and into fall. Hopefully you finish before it gets too cold in Maine, NH. Even so, you are in the best condition to handle that just in case. The other way (ME->GA) you'd start weak in rough conditions in the summer. Hike all summer and finish nearly in winter in GA. the whole time, you'd see fewer fellow hikers.

  • love the vid--hate the song

  • Inspiring stuff. Well done.

  • 2175 miles to Mt Katahdin Maine.. always wondered how many miles we were talking on this "hike". Super video!

  • Props. Congratulations!

  • I truly enjoyed seeing the wonderful AT scenery! Thanks for sharing the nice photos!

  • " let the sun illuminate the words that you cannot find, reaching for something in the distance." the pictures go well with it ;)

  • great pics, terrible song

  • Back 20 years ago... my high school buddies and I had a plan to hike 30 days from Springer. The 4 of us started early one morning and after 13 miles on day one... our leader and the only one of us with A.T. experience... broke his leg in an attempt to avoid a snake. So we had to turn back. Our leader died the next year in Iraq ... we never attempted the A.T. again.

  • @label1877 Sorry for your loss, yet the challenge still remains to thru hike it. My Dad once asked me a rhetorical question, " Son, do you know what the most expensive thing is in life?...regret,...regret is the most expensive thing ever". Don't let that happen to you. Go backl out there and in the words of Larry The Cable Guy "Get er done!"

  • Cool video of the AT been there many times in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Stayed at most of the shelters there, Davenport Gap, Cosby Knob, Icewater Spring, Kepart, Mount Collins, Silers Bald, Mollies Ridge and many other shelters in the Smoky's...

  • Well done friend.

  • Great video!

It's my dream to one day "do a thru".

I'm happy for you that you were able to follow your dream.

    jerseydave

  • pause at 1:49 i hiked there 2 lol i started at wiley shelter and went too aldo or algo mountain i forgot lol i have some videos if you would like to see =)

  • Had to mute the horrible music but great video. I'm getting more and more inspired to go.

  • grate video man i was alwease going to do a hike like that but now i am a young father struggling to pay then bills at 18 so dont think i will be able to any time soon once again grate video

  • I know this is an old video but congrats anyway.

  • I went to Springer Mountain to hike to Woody Gap. I made it up on the mountain and back to the parking lot. I'm going back in March. I will do it.

  • awesome vid!!! Something that I definately want to do for sure!

  • Heading to Springer mountain on the14 on November and hiking to Woody Gap... I hope my large mammal self can take the altitude :)

  • What a great and unique adventure!! Wow, 2000 miles of hiking is pretty impressive. Congrats to the group for achieving your goal!!! Thanks for documenting it as well!!!

  • Beautiful!!...Im doin this before I die

  • Great video, I dont see how this is financially possible for me but maybe i can find a way. The thought of taking this great journey is never far off in my mind.

  • Having just returned from walking the 1000 km Camino de Santiago in Spain I was very interested in this video as I am keen to do this walk. The scenery is spectacular."

  • Just walked the camino de Santaigo in Spain - 1000 kms. This might be my next project

  • Where is the jutting rock overhang located (3:00)? I've seen this in a number of slideshows. Awsome spot!

  • Great inspiring video. I dream of taken the journey one day. Just like to know what was you high and low during your trip. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • great photographs of

    a super hike. dig yourself!

  • awsome pics for a great trip . Congrats .

Hope to do it myself someday. Working on my 4000'ers now

  • I watch this every few months to revamp my ambition to hike the AT in 2012. This is really a great vid! You got some amazing pictures along the way, and put them together well. Thanks for posting this, it seems to be an inspiration to many.

  • ive done most of the AT here in Va on up towards Ga, awesome hike, awesome views, and some of the nicest people you could ever meet....the pictures of the lean-to's up north makes me wish i would have went further lol our's down here never looked that nice haha maybe when the kids get older i'll get back out there and do it again....

  • i love this vid real nice work :)

  • im heading out again next year for my second go at a thru hike. did it a couple years ago and every time i watch these vid's i just cant wait to get back out there. thanks for the vid!

    -northern storm 2008

  • damn have to do this.....been training for the last year or so....and 150 days without computers or t.v's....that'l be a trip on it's own....

  • @dasadopeboy Just thinking on it. Wonder about GPS or smart phone/computer, except for keeping weight down. Camera a must but same weight issue. And cost.

  • @johncfl GPS not necessary. After a while you get very good at following the white blazes. Some don't even carry maps after a while. One book that is very complete gives you nearly everything you need detail wise regarding the trail making a GPS not necessary.

Old goat took a pocketmail, mobile e-mail. They went bankrupt, but it was light and simple. Power is the biggest challenge.

  • I am 15 years old and just went through knee surgery to get a tumor removed. I just have to say this video has been my inspiration to hike the AT when I graduate, and it kept me going through this whole ordeal and has encouraged me to walk a little bit more every day. Thank you so much. :)

  • The cliff at 3:03 is McAfee Knob. It is located between Catawba and Roanoke Virginia.

  • where is that at 3:03? i keep seeing it in almost every appalachian trail video

  • Epic!

  • Great video..I thru hiked it last year and enjoyed every minute of it. I recommend to anyone. All of the people and trail days. Ahh i am doing it again when i retire.

    Solar man 2009 thru GA>MA

  • I'm getting closer to a career change and am in the early planning stages of my hike... Love your video! Anytime I need to be inspired, I will most def pull up this video!! Thank you!

  • Hi Adam! It was fun chatting with you and your friends on the trail. Thanks for your kind note. Great to hear from you. We are now at Rte 103 in VT (just South of Rutland), but had to come home because my right knee if giving me major problems. We hope to go back in two weeks to continue on in my quest to complete the AT for the 2nd time. Old Goat

  • Now to get back. xD

  • Hey Old Goat! This is Adam, 1 of the 5 guys from Long Island who met you and Check 6 on the trial this past weekend. Great video!! Just letting you know we checked out your vid, you're a true inspiration. After doing just a week, i have no idea how you did it everyday for 5.5 months - you're a warrior. Keep trekkin! Katahdin or Bust!

  • that’s so awesome!!!

  • Hey good job and what kind of stove/fuel did you use?

  • @zkiltez22 He used a "Soda Can Stove" (google it), literally two ends of soda cans compressed together with some holes in it. The fuel was HEET (yellow bottle), a commercial Methyl alcohol sold over many parts of the trail. Its actually an automotive product but onw ounce in a soda burner will boil water in about 15 mintues and it's amazingly lightweight.

The second time he hiked he used compressed gas canisters because he was cooking for two.

  • music sucked, otherwise good film. considering a through-hike/ a few 100-200milers in the near future.

  • I am hiking this is July :) Virginia

  • someday i hope to do the trail

  • Really great video. Very Inspiring. I've watched a lot of videos of thru-hikes of the AT and PCT but I really enjoyed yours. I am planning a thru-hike in the coming years because I am losing my vision and a thru-hike of the AT is on what I call my "White Cane List." Thanks for this wonderful video.

  • @camelwalker23 there was actually a Blind AT thru hiker in 1990. His name is Bill Irwin and he wrote a book called Blind Courage. I've not read it and do not know much beyond the fact that he accomplished it, but you might enjoy the story. Here's wishing you the best.

  • WOW, A really good time,(i would love to finish) where is Rusty's? Just a really GREAT video, thanks

  • I can understand why you are called "Old Goat" - you hiked the Trail with 0 mile days! That is not easy, even most young guys can't do that. Great job Old Goat.

  • just asked my parents if i could defer from college for a year to hike the AT. i'm 18 and a girl; my mom thinks i need someone to accompany me who is handy with his fists to protect me. thanks for the video to keep me inspired :)

  • How do you afford to take a whole year off work? I would love to go - but just don't see the financial possibility?

  • @wesarnold1 He had just retired. There are many Late 50's+, and 60 year old thru hikers.

  • behind my nieghbor hood we have a 3,000 acre hiking range theres waterfalls and blossom trees i should take my cam with me!!ol im the only person who knows about it

  • that is a great slideshow, beautiful,. me and my friend jami are planning a thru hike starting in maine heading south to georgia.time is drawing near only about 2 months to go ,i cant wait ive spoke to many people that say you dont look at the world the same way after and its something you,ll alwayz remember, see you on the Trail.

  • Nice Shelter Pix. Congrats!

  • i am looking to by a good rucksack any good brand suggestions? Please reply. thanks

  • Kelty and they only make backpacks.

  • thats so beautiful

  • I'm 16 and i'm really considering hiking the AT, not right now but in the near future like after high school. Any tips, suggestions,or comments? I'm a boy scout, i play hockey, i go hunting and fishing and love the outdoors so I think I would be able to do it both physically and mentally.

  • do it. I'm 21 i did it when I was 20 this last summer in 4 months. im an eagle scout as well. its all in your head man. you'll meet friends for life, see crazy people, beautiful places, have shitty days where you want to die, but the end is soooo worth it and you will look back on it the rest of your life! - "The Kid" -NOBO-09

  • Read 'A walk in the woods' by Bill Bryson.

  • do it before you get a family, a job, a life.

  • Hey, I'm 16 too dude, I've already started planning. I 100% think you should do it. It will be a life changing experience.

  • Shelters are free and mail drop offs are misc supplies that someone mails for you. These packages arrive at post offices or business a few days before you arrive.

    Thanks for the video!

  • You'd think after 9 years I could watch a video on the AT and not cry...nope, tears are streaming. I need to go back!

  • Can't wait, I'm hiking southbound 2011! awesome pictures

  • @SammyWoWaddict

    Hi-five me when we pass!!!

  • Haha I totally will!

  • Amazing, I wish to one day do the same thing

  • I just read Bill Bryson's 'A walk in the woods', so have gathered an appretiation for what you did. Well done, very impressive.

  • I like how you have a boy scout popcorn box in the first picture of your food drops. Are you a scout master or just avid popcorn consumer?

  • Great pics and music combination. Wife and I start our thru-hike end of Feb 2010.

  • Are those shelters free to use?

  • what are the dropoffs for?

  • looks like a heck of a trip

  • Awesome video AND you made it to WV!

  • Nice video - congratulations on completing your thru-hike. looks like you lost some weight on your hike!

  • wots the half gallon challenge

  • The Half Gallon Challenge is to eat a half gallon of ice cream in one sitting.

  • Fantastic Video, Never heard of the Trail up until I started reading Bryson's 'A Walk in the Woods'

Sounds a fantastic place and thanks to you I can now put the images to the words. Would love one day to head over to the US and try this trail myself.

    Congrats.

  • this is a life goal of mine. but i need to go camping in the rain sometime so i can be a little more prepared. ive been out in 18*F and snow on the ground but never the rain.

  • I have wanted to hike the trail since I was in 6th grade when my neighbor who I looked up did it his senior year of highschool graduating early just to do.

Every time I drive by the Masspike bridge of the trail I am reminded I need to get myself in gear and on the trail

  • Noooooo! I was guna hike the trail and use this song@!!!!!!!!!

  • Well done. Keep on keepin on.

  • Planning on hiking it in 2-3 years!

  • i deff doing this after high school

  • Thank you for sharing. Appreciate it greatly.

  • awesome video i am hoping to hike some of the trail this summer, not the entire thing but maybe two weeks

  • Great your liveing the dream I want to hike the AT so bad

  • Amazing!!! Live The Dream!!

  • what do you do for food?

  • Mail drops are prepared meal packets in about a weeks worth increments. You have someone mail them to you and pick them up at post offices. Within is you food for about a week. That's how Old Goat did it.

  • dreamy

  • I am awed. Good job! I have hiked a number of the Virginia parts with my two dogs and recognized the pictures ..fondly. Would love to thru hike but still wary being a single hiker (even with dogs).

  • Most people hiking the AT start off solo but meet others quickly. From there you can hike alone or not, your choice dependent on who you meet.

  • nice video how was it

  • WOW! great video, you make me want to attempt that journey!!

  • Love your video...this is my goal...to hike all the way through...thank you for sharing!

  • Is there electricity in the shelters to recharge my cell phone?

  • Ummm that would be a no. In fact even bring your cell phone is considered "taboo" on the AT.

  • Most hikers stop about once a week in a hostel or hotel. So there you could charge phones etc. And yes, nearly every hiker has a cell phone, although it's off most of the time to save the battery. Verizon seems to have the best reception as of 2009.

  • Great video! I remember all of those spots and the entire state of Vermont was rain and muddy trails. Kinda like a river, 2ft wide 2,178 miles long haha

just finished a thru hike on the AT and it was the most eye-opening adventure . What a great time! Trail life is the best life!

  • im not doing a thru hike but me and some friends are hiking in the smokeys for a week or so this spring

  • ive never been on this trail butit looks fun! =^.^=

  • great video, im 16 and thinking of hiking the appalachian trail before or after college and i think that anyone that as hiked it is pretty cool

  • i'm 16 too and want to do the same thing! except i dont plan on going to college :) my dream is to do the contential divide too

  • @pillar222 Hey, im the same age and have the same dream...I plan on reading up and doing some section hiking to prepare, and can NOT wait, it'd be such an amazing experience 8]

  • @pillar222 omg total ditto XD cept i live in england so its a bit far to go :(

  • Cool video!

  • Great video! My daughter is in Maine and has about 230 miles to go.

  • Thanks, did she finish?

  • What are the 30 mail drops for?

  • Food, it's a long way to carry it all.

  • Comment removed

  • To send food, and gear to pre disclosed locations.

  • Such an inspirational video! Congratulations on your achievement and I loved what you said at the closing.

  • Good video. I didn't know Pine Grove Furnace is the half-way point. That's really close to me, and so far I've hiked Duncanon to Center Knob Point (near Boiling Springs). Hope to hike more.

  • ive hiked part of this :)

  • hiking the AP trail is my dream too

  • Nice pictures!! Thanks for sharing with us.

  • XaviersSecretary: I section hiked with my dog (about 170 miles) and it was so much better that way. She smelled out a wild boar along the trail (in NC). Wouldn't have seen it otherwise since it blended in with the brown leaves while foraging. My dog--Polenka--handled it very well, respected the boar and didn't disturb it. Many more experiences like that hiking throughout U.S. with her. Wished I'd have had Polenka on the AT thru-hike (GA-ME 2/4-6/18/01).
