they did this on scrapheap challenge uk a few years ago, best engine in the world as no moving parts and great weight to thrust ratio, just a shame the germans used it on us in the mid 1940's
I think they lasted a bit longer then that, maybe an hour or so. After that, the valve pedals would fail, not the engine itself. It didn't matter though since pj's were (and still are) very cheap and easy to build. And they strapped bombs to them so that kinda negated the problem to :P
@WWoodyW their's used archeic reed valves, which fail due to flexing at high tempurature. this design is valveless, but it might be possible to develope harder wearing valves to make the more potent valved versions last longer by a longshot.
not realy. in the first part of the cycle, hot gasses rush out the exhaust AND the intake. a vacuum is then formed in the CC, fresh air and fuel is drawn from the intake. the same vacuum sucks some of the hot exhaust gasses back and uses them to compress the fuel air mix and to re-ignite it. rince repeat.
yup. the CC is made from normal steel - it can't take the heat and will flake off. after a couple of runs with steel like this and the engine is done for. needles to say I use mostly stainless :P
excuse my ignorence, but personally i dont understand the point in pulse jet engnies over standard jet engines because as far as i can se by watching videos they do have a lot of thrust but they also seem to make a horrible bellowing noise and set themselves on fire?! what are the advantages of this engine over a normal jet engine?
Haha the fire you see is from some expoxy like stuff I put on the back. can't even remember why I did that. Pulse-jets are stupidly loud but if you weigh all the pro's and con's, pulse-jets are, pound for pound, more efficient then turbine engines. There are also more uses then just thrust like heating, pre pressure risers, pesticide distributers and efficient steam generators
Damnit why can't anybody hold a camera steady?

what if the welds fail?? mig welded or tig?
SthealthRaider 1 year ago
@SthealthRaider
Mig welded. then the engine will fail. no dramatic explosion though

Is dit degene die ik nu aan het bouwen ben??De 40 pound pulse jet??
barrysteenmans 2 years ago
nope deze is al 3 jaar oud, heeft 4 inlaten, een korte uitlaat en een divergant/ reflector. Ik zei ook al dat jij de eerste was die de motor maakte.

@wolfe1970 Didn't their engines also fail mid flight after only 30 minutes of use?

I have a question that i havent gotten a straight good answer to: Why dose the flame come out the intake?
Should'nt it come out the back since the air-flow goes that way?
solitajre222 2 years ago

oh! i see! that was the best answer i got. thx!

I see multiple injection ports--cool. Did you accidentally spray paint it before the test? I saw flameage off the cc in the beinning. heheheh
BlakeMason2 2 years ago
It's made from "junk steel"; it still had some paint on it - HAD :P

Very cool! Have you had any metal fatigue from the tremendous heat build up? I wish I had a neighbor like you! :-)

This looks to be based off of US patent 3354650.

If you mean - is this a pulse-jet, then yes. This pattent, however, speaks of pressure gain. this is not incorperated in ths engine

pulse-jets do not have any moving parts. pulse-jets have cycles so to speak. this one works at about 350 cycles (or hz) per second
