Hammerheads, whale sharks and even reefies wil probably have to end up on the endangered species list (like great whites) for hands on protection to be put in place. Sad isnt it... I wouldnt hesitate charging locals for killing sharks, seeing as tuna and other fish are plentiful in surrounding waters.

Hammerheads are on it.[scalloped,Great] Whale sharks R 1 of some 20 species that R critically endangered & R develeping genetic defects b/c people use them as tourist attractions(shrinking, babys grow less due to increased stress). Three species of thresher shark along with the shortfin mako shark R considered "vulnerable to extinction". & the thresher shark is my favorite shark species.*sniffle :( almost half of all species of sharks on on the red list(going endangered). PLZ STOP THIS MADNESS!

Why dont people see that we need the sharks?

At the US east coast many marine biologists remarked, that the overall fish-rate in the waters dropped dramatically since the shark-rate dropped.

So if ppl keep killing the sharks they will cause a food shortage because there wont be any fish in any waters anymore and then they will have to pay 10 bugs for a fish stick.

And this food shortage will kill many ppl if that happens!

Absolutely! Someone needs to do something. The Costa Rican government has laws in place that prohibit fishing at Cocos. The laws are not enforced because the Costa Rican majority do not see alternative ways to put food on the tables of the fishermen's families. If we can solve this economic problem AND communicate the importance of the island and viable solution to the Costa Rica people, we can hope to solve this problem.
