A year or two ago I remember watching a video of someone doing this trail (or an identical one) with no harness (so they claimed) while filming. I remember at one point them waving their foot in the air to the side to show off a little (so, they were standing on one foot). I remember it creeped me out so bad (especially at the end of the planks). Does anyone remember this?
@thezuse ; SearchYoutube or Goggle "Huashan Cliffside Path (No Harness)" and you will see the dude's video. This video gives me such vertigo I can hardly stand to watch them. Never. In a million. YEARS.
I did this recently and it was so worth doing. Sooo much fun. Course, you have to get up there first, haha! Word of warning, if you hire a local guide, make sure they don't take your camera away before getting on. I was told by a guide that it was verboten to bring camera gear on the via ferrata and it was a crock of ... excrement. She was just trying to get clientele for a friend up there with a shitty fujifilm instant film camera. As a photographer, that really screwed with my experience a bit
This trail was built by He Yuan-xi and his disciples. He was a Quanzhen Taoist monk from Gansu. At the end of the trail there is another cave, He Zu Cave, which was the cave craved out by him in late 1200's. There is a big crave of 3 Chinese characters 'Quan Zhen Yan' at the cliff above, the cliff is facing down. It is also thought that he was the guy who craved the 3 big characters.
This plank trail is just below Southern Summit, which is 2160 meter high. There are actually 3 sections of the trail: the 'Upper Part' begins with Nan Tian Meng (Southern Heavenly Gate) and ends at Chao Yuan Cave. It is about 20 meter long and the trail is half meter wide, all craved along the cliff. Then you climbed down an iron ladder, which is the 'Middle Part', afterwards you walk towards the west and it is the last part shown in this video.
@beijingmike Mate,There is no f....n way I would do that with equipment made in China ....your one brave son of a bitch ..and I mien that in a good way.......I would never have the balls ..Cheerio
@misa1987 Hello, the plank walk now requires a harness at a cost of 40rmb which is about $5.90 US dollars. Entry to HuaShan itself is about 100rmb and another 70rmb for the cable cars. I'll try to put up some more video later on the park itself. The buses from Xi'an to Huashan take two hours and cost only 30rmb ($4.30US). It's really a beautiful place.
@r1ccardo I believe it leads to a temple. Look for the moderngonzo clip, "The world's most dangerous hike" in related videos, he shows the temple. Doing the trek is an offering of devotion by the faithful.
Fantastic video! But, considering this "path" is in China and we know how little they think of quality of workmanship and safety, I'm not sure I'd trust those boards!
Hi Mike. Glad you liked my video. I have to say that this looks much more intimidating. Those planks "look" ok, though I do not have much faith in man made pathways. ;-)
Curious, at the end of the plank pathway, there looked to be more chain to continue the journey. It this the case? Did you continue?
Hi Mike! You did it! Your email indicated soon and sure enough. I'm getting the same feeling I did when I first watched Kings Passageway (!). Beats any old ride at Disneyland. Wish your video could include the trip there and shots of the surrounding things which would depict the local scene. I travel through your travels while I'm grounded here in Las Vegas, tied to too many responsibilities. You lead an amazing life. Thanks for sharing. I'll forward this to my local friends and the crew at REI.
Thanks for the comments my friend. I actually do have some video of the surrounding HuaShan area that I'll have to process when I get a chance. Have a great day!

It was originally built in the Yuan dynasty, circa 1300's, by a group of Taoists.

one question, can you rent the safty equipment?
Vagabund92 1 year ago
@Vagabund92 Yes you can and it's super easy. There is a vendor stationed at the start of the plank walk renting the safety harness for about $5.50 US
