Can someone explain to me what that kinda padwork improves? I've only just started boxing and when we do padwork the pads are just held steady. In the video Roger is putting in just as much hard work as Floyd, swinging those pads about etc!
@jamesington2006 Timing and inches..They are doing the pad exercise in a way that improves Floyd's speed, counter punches and his unique defense, he uses his soldiers to defend, they way Roger does it is to suit his style and perfect it, punches, roll using the shouldier as a block, punch etc

If you notice he doesn't hit the mitts that hard, the purpose of the drill is to build speed, def, and teach yourself to throw and counter with multi punches back. His uncle Roger is a master focus mitt and counter boxer coach, who shaped Mayweather's counter boxing style. Great work out and its really fun. If there is a boxing coach at your gym ask him to try it with you, but it takes a long time to build speed up.

i dont know if its only me but when i'm on the pads my trainers always tell me that i have to fully stretch my arms and hit the pad. floyd is just like half way thru to stretching hands fully.

You should look at what they do defensively. You probably have this same problem with other defensively centered legends like Pernell Whitaker, James Toney & Wilfred Benitez.

JMM circled away from his power hand and it reduced the effectivness of his attacks to such an extent, most people including myself had it to JMM, untill i saw the repay were i gave it to MP, even moselys old ass temporarily stuttered the normaly fluid attack of the pac. FMM out does everyone in both technique and countering

I would agree with your analysis, when fighting a southpaw, considering the opponent is orthodox, it does really come down to foot placement and I think JMM had that advantage, he kept his lead foot outside MP's for the majority of the fight, thus as you put it circled away from his power. But, at the end of the day you have to beat the champ and you have to do it decisively (my opinion).FMM would likely use a similar method.
@426ajg The main Problem is that Manny was fighting someone who still had something left who was also an elite fighter; unlike DLH and Mosley who were years past being able to be competitive let alone in their prime. You also saw this with the first Morales fight - he still had enough left to outbox manny. Cotto never had the best chin to begin with and after Margo-cheato he was never the same. clottey, diaz, and Margo-cheato are big but slow glorified club fighters.

Many times fighters come up with routines in their training, not just to look good doing it, but a routine translates to effective motion.
It's like lifting weights. You don't go into a gym and try to lift the heaviest weight possible without the correct warmup, form, grip, etc. You should start with getting the right form and motion with smaller weights first. Even as a warmup.
Same here, going full force is only a part of the training process. There other is endurance and muscle memory.
Also keep in mind that Floyd is a relaxed fighter. I think people overrate his speed and focus too much on it. He's not a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 rapid fire speed machine. He's a 1---2--------3-4 type of timing and quick release fighter. Usually 3 out of 5 punches in his combinations land vs 1 or 2 out of 6-7 punches of a Manny, Oscar or Leonard type of combo.
His relaxed style, like James Toney, allows for preservation and focus on controlling pace. Not everyone focuses on Tyson'esque bagwork.

A entire training session is not about putting all speed and force behind every punch. Sometimes is simply about endurance, muscle memory and keeping your body in motion. Try this simple "pitty pat" routine that many think is "nothing" and tell me you don't start breathing.
As the Mayweathers say, it's about timing and inches. Not all full force and speed.
Weird glove work. He reaches out a long way to slap each punch. Isn't it better to have the target and the glove-man's feet more aligned to where they are on a person? E.g. catch a jab just by your jaw (not a 1-2 feet in front of it)? That's certainly how Roach teaches it. (Not a popular man in Floyd's camp to be sure:)

You should look at what they do defensively. You probably have this same problem with other defensively centered legends like Pernell Whitaker, James Toney & Wilfred Benitez.

@426ajg theres one thing ive noticed about MP he struggles against a good technician/ counter puncher (as most do). JMM circled away from his power hand and it reduced the effectivness of his attacks to such an extent, most people including myself had it to JMM, untill i saw the repay were i gave it to MP, even moselys old ass temporarily stuttered the normaly fluid attack of the pac. FMM out does everyone in both technique and countering

I would agree with your analysis, when fighting a southpaw, considering the opponent is orthodox, it does really come down to foot placement and I think JMM had that advantage, he kept his lead foot outside MP's for the majority of the fight, thus as you put it circled away from his power. But, at the end of the day you have to beat the champ and you have to do it decisively (my opinion).FMM would likely use a similar method.

@426ajg The main Problem is that Manny was fighting someone who still had something left who was also an elite fighter; unlike DLH and Mosley who were years past being able to be competitive let alone in their prime. You also saw this with the first Morales fight - he still had enough left to outbox manny. Cotto never had the best chin to begin with and after Margo-cheato he was never the same. clottey, diaz, and Margo-cheato are big but slow glorified club fighters.

Many times fighters come up with routines in their training, not just to look good doing it, but a routine translates to effective motion.
It's like lifting weights. You don't go into a gym and try to lift the heaviest weight possible without the correct warmup, form, grip, etc. You should start with getting the right form and motion with smaller weights first. Even as a warmup.
Same here, going full force is only a part of the training process. There other is endurance and muscle memory.

Also keep in mind that Floyd is a relaxed fighter. I think people overrate his speed and focus too much on it. He's not a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 rapid fire speed machine. He's a 1---2--------3-4 type of timing and quick release fighter. Usually 3 out of 5 punches in his combinations land vs 1 or 2 out of 6-7 punches of a Manny, Oscar or Leonard type of combo.
His relaxed style, like James Toney, allows for preservation and focus on controlling pace. Not everyone focuses on Tyson'esque bagwork.

A entire training session is not about putting all speed and force behind every punch. Sometimes is simply about endurance, muscle memory and keeping your body in motion. Try this simple "pitty pat" routine that many think is "nothing" and tell me you don't start breathing.
As the Mayweathers say, it's about timing and inches. Not all full force and speed.

Weird glove work. He reaches out a long way to slap each punch. Isn't it better to have the target and the glove-man's feet more aligned to where they are on a person? E.g. catch a jab just by your jaw (not a 1-2 feet in front of it)? That's certainly how Roach teaches it. (Not a popular man in Floyd's camp to be sure:)
