How about.... the friction giving the beds heat and therefore rising around the cooler beads. The beads affected by the friction asorb heat through conduction and therefore rise around the cooler beads because the warmer beads are less dense than the cooler beads which are more dense.
Isn't the cause obvious? Smaller beads are lighter, darker beads are heavier & larger - hence by adding them randomly - all the darker beads will have a slight initial force of gravity down past the lighter beads. Secondly all beads are imperfect, hence rub on each other & rotate (making still more rotate), thirdly; the bounds of the box don't rotate (not compared to the planes/axis of the walls). Finally; corners are harder to move from. All this results in the observed emergent properties.
I liked the middle one.

I've been telling people for years, "It's all about the beads!" They just ignored me, well who's chuckling silently to themselves now?

Isnt this how the earth's mantle react under the crust (second example of movement)

2:50 I believe you are correct.
Pretty interesting.

indeed, this could represent a model for earth. Maybe some breakthrough could reveal as to why this occurs with this expirement.

awesome!

If these patterns are the same within the earth, then perhaps a significant size of an explanation lies within gravity?

That's actually rather interesting.
