I tried putting my screen on my tv and my screen went blank i hooked an external monitor up to my laptop that was blank and hit extend to desktop what can i do to fix this it is a vista windows and an hp?
I have hp dv7-1245 dx. I have a corrupted bios n black screen, keyboard not responding, it's like it's sleep n won't wait up. Even though i press n hold the power button for it to go off, when i start it, it goes back to the same thing. It's like it's not starting from a full start. Will it help what u did? I'll try it. my friend don't be ignorant because ignorant people easily die.......how comes that the problem is related to the ram? if the problem is related with the ram,if what is the display that you can see in the monitor of your laptop,same dispaly that you can see if you will use an external monitor. 100 percent i can assure you that the problem is either the inverter of your monitor or else the picture tube. final solution is to change the lcd monitor of your laptop. thanks.....

... (continued from previous msg). I reset the power options so that the power button and also closing the lid "do nothing." That stopped it from powering down but it did not fix the random black screen problem. I have never disassembled a computer before but was so annoyed I carefully removed the keyboard and surrounding covers to get a look. I disconnected and reconnected the ribbon cable connecting the power button board to the motherboard and reassembled the machine. No more black screen!
My Compaq CQ50 had an intermitent black screen problem, random and unpredictable. On and off, on and off. Each time it went black it would trigger the powering down sequence and would finally shut off completely (as opposed to sudden disconnect as when you hold the power button down, hibernation, or sleep). Tapping or pressing on the area around the power button would bring the screen back to life briefly before it finally powered down. I will tell you how I fixed in it the next post.

I hate toshiba.. It's plastic and it breaks easily.. Very weird the design. And the CMOS battery is underneath the motherboard, and you can't even take it out without soldering it. Time to purchase a new laptop.
When I start the laptop it all works fine and I can even logg in,
but when I logg in a black screen appears with only my mouse cursor.
I cant open up task manager, because nothing pop ups when I press ctrl + alt + delete and then select open up task manager. But after hours searching and trying I found out when I start my laptop with safe mode it does works. So it cant be that my laptop is broken, please help me!

I have an HP Laptop, had the same problem, it turned on but had a black screen. I followed the steps and somehow took the sticks (RAM) out put them back on and one of them was out place (yes, I don't know how it happened) place them back on correctly, and the laptop worked!!!!

@911noobster Yo@911noobster You are looking at a hard drive problem most likely, on many HP model laptops after it posts, it tries to give control over to the hard drive to start the window boot-up process....if it finds no hard drive you will get a blinking curser in the top left corner. It can also mean other things but this the most common.

@MINDBful mines an acer aspire 3690 and i put a high voltage charger then it was really bright then it died it leaving me a black screen. I didnt have the manufacture charger.. i can see the screen with lots of lights around me..:P
@AwesomeslayerG Sounds like your new charger might have burned out ur inverter box. (Not uncommon with new off-brand chargers) So basically the inverter box controls your backlight display and lets you turn your backlight up and down regularly. So it will have to be replaced. FEAR NOT! They only cost LESS THAN 10 BUCKS ON EBAY.
Several models of laptops are known to have problems with what called the GPU (graphics processing unit) If this chip becomes too hot it can lose connection with the motherboard however simply heating the motherboard will most likely be a temp fix and will damage the motherboard even worse. In order to fix Solder related problems you MUST use a controlled environment and the solder has to be heated in stages….nothing less will fix a bad GPU for long.
I have an HP dv4-1365dx. The laptop outputs 2 an external vga monitor all the time. When I turn on the laptop, the lcd screen its lit up, but nothing shows. Basically a bright black. The problem is intermittent cause sometimes it shows normally & will boot 2 windows. I just installed a brand new lcd. Still the same problem. Would this problem be the inverter? Or is the problem beyond that? I thought the inverter is only responsible 4 lighting the screen, which there is light but no pic.
@BlackCaScorpio Im not completely sure BUT i think your Video Card is overheating and slowly dying. So youll have to re-heat it. You said the video is going out back and fourth right? Yup thats your best bet. I'll post a video on how to fix that problem later. Its not the inverter because the inverter box is only responsible for the backlighting in the laptop and nothing else.
@MrLaptopTech I've actually changed out both the lcd inverter and the lcd screen with brand new ones and still the same problem. The lcd will stay light up, but its just light up black. So I'm confused as to if there would be to video chips, cause external display works all the time.
@BlackCaScorpio Then you most likely have a short in your LCD cable. It is unlikely that the video chip is the problem if your external display works 100%
@MrLaptopTech Yeah I was actually told by someone on ebay that the DV4 series had a recall for defective lcd cables. I couldn't find it though. Another user in the HP forums reported that if he'd press in the area where the cable runs above the keyboard, his display would come back on. I guess HP did a bad job of routing the lcd cable through the hinges. So buying a new lcd cable is my last resort before scrapping the laptop. Thanks for the information.
@BlackCaScorpio I am unaware of a recall for that issue but many model laptops over time will develop problems with the LCD cable because of how they route it thru to the LCD from the base. The other users problem is most likely a loose LCD cable if pushing down just above the F1-F4 keys helps, this is the most common area that LCD cables connect to the motherboard so in his case, he might not need parts. just needs to reseat the cable with care as some cables have small pins inside the harness.

Sounds like your inverter box went out... They're usually found under the screen of the laptop.... A replacement on eBay shouldn't cost more that $10.

@mariox402 Most likely LCD inverter....small chance CCFL tubes which is what people are calling the backlight...althought the CCFL tubes are always found on the sides, bottom or top of the LCD. ; )

In all serious! Thanks a million. I have Gateway M1625 and the screen just went black! It has two memory slots I removed the first one (1gb) and guess what it started with the 1 gb memory. Thanks again. I know its' my memory.

Hi can you pls help me, i have a Sony Vaio . I can turn it on and it works but, after a 10 to 15 minutes the screen turns black. I've change the power management setting all to never, still it keeps turning to black screen.

your an idiot. you didn't ground yourself, you unscrewed your RAM cover then turned your computer over, let your RAM sit out of it's anti-static casing on top of your computer, installed mismatched RAM, made contact with the gold pins, and turned your computer over without screwing in the RAM cover. why is it that your computer had no RAM to begin with??? noob

hi, i have a compaq presario f700. The screen was black and at first it sounded like the computer was tryng to turn on and would last for a second, go off and then try again. i removed the battery and the power and hold down the power button for 60 seconds. now the hp flashes on like it is going to start and then i get a blinking hypen. then the hypen disappears. At least now I know that the screen works, but i don't know why nothing happens after the hyphen disappears, can you help me?
i also read somewhere about removing the battery and unplug power cord,hold down power button for 30 seconds.it removes static electricty or something.

I will remember that for later use. I have a problem with my old Dell 5100 laptop which turns on normally, but I get the blank screen after about 15 minutes. When I close the screen and open it again it comes back on for about 5 minutes then the screen goes blank again. I took it apart once to clean out any dust in it with liquid air, but still have the problem. It has to be hardware which is the problem.

See what happens for my laptop, is that when I turn it on it will go through everything and once it gets to the starting windows page and then the whole screen goes black. I have tried to start up in safe mode, but that doesnt seem to work. The computer isn't frozen either, because I can still move the cursor. I really need to figure this out. I hope you can help.

@051979able Boot into safe mode and in device manager under Video, uninstall your video card. Then reboot. Reload drivers if it prompts.

I hate toshiba.. It's plastic and it breaks easily.. Very weird the design. And the CMOS battery is underneath the motherboard, and you can't even take it out without soldering it. Time to purchase a new laptop.

Hi please help me with my laptop,
When I start the laptop it all works fine and I can even logg in,
but when I logg in a black screen appears with only my mouse cursor.
I cant open up task manager, because nothing pop ups when I press ctrl + alt + delete and then select open up task manager. But after hours searching and trying I found out when I start my laptop with safe mode it does works. So it cant be that my laptop is broken, please help me!

I have an HP Laptop, had the same problem, it turned on but had a black screen. I followed the steps and somehow took the sticks (RAM) out put them back on and one of them was out place (yes, I don't know how it happened) place them back on correctly, and the laptop worked!!!!

I just did that and brushed all video pin connections down.Still have a clean laptop right now.I installed win7 3 times,& had to wipe my HD 3 times.Everytime I ran windows update,screen would shut off.And it would do it randomly also.After I wiped it the last time I got this"bad signature in sector 0 on 80 h".I think its cause I fully wiped it this time.Is it ok to install my OS now?I believe something was in my pc (virus,worm etc.)causing the screen to shutoff.

My brothers computer just said on the screen if you turn your computer back on again you will never be able to get on it ever again. I'm wondering if its a virus or its just the video card burning out. So we are thinking of buying a new very fast computer or should we go to best buy and see what the problem is? I get a black screen if laptop is restarted or (even shutdown and restarted). But if it is switched off & kept overnight, next day screen will be normal but if restarted (/shutdown+restarted) no display. | Their was a solution in web saying remove the battery + adapter. Then hold on power button for 40-60s, then power on with adapter... It did work sometime but not dependable. What could be the hardware solution for this ? Do I have to replace the backlight and/or Inverter ?

ive got a hp mini and it turns (there is the hp compaq screen before windows) so i click start windows hoping to get thelist of my users as usual but instead i get... the black screen and sometimes i get a white flahing bar it the top left hand corner now ive waited to see if it would load an it doesnt help!!!!

@911noobster Yo@911noobster You are looking at a hard drive problem most likely, on many HP model laptops after it posts, it tries to give control over to the hard drive to start the window boot-up process....if it finds no hard drive you will get a blinking curser in the top left corner. It can also mean other things but this the most common.

I am working on this for a friend. and she sent me a new motherboard. @MINDBful mines an acer aspire 3690 and i put a high voltage charger then it was really bright then it died it leaving me a black screen. I didnt have the manufacture charger.. i can see the screen with lots of lights around me..:P

@AwesomeslayerG Sounds like your new charger might have burned out ur inverter box. (Not uncommon with new off-brand chargers) So basically the inverter box controls your backlight display and lets you turn your backlight up and down regularly. So it will have to be replaced. FEAR NOT! They only cost LESS THAN 10 BUCKS ON EBAY.

Several models of laptops are known to have problems with what called the GPU (graphics processing unit) If this chip becomes too hot it can lose connection with the motherboard however simply heating the motherboard will most likely be a temp fix and will damage the motherboard even worse. In order to fix Solder related problems you MUST use a controlled environment and the solder has to be heated in stages….nothing less will fix a bad GPU for long.

I have an HP dv4-1365dx. The laptop outputs 2 an external vga monitor all the time. When I turn on the laptop, the lcd screen its lit up, but nothing shows. Basically a bright black. The problem is intermittent cause sometimes it shows normally & will boot 2 windows. I just installed a brand new lcd. Still the same problem. Would this problem be the inverter? Or is the problem beyond that? I thought the inverter is only responsible 4 lighting the screen, which there is light but no pic.

@BlackCaScorpio Im not completely sure BUT i think your Video Card is overheating and slowly dying. So youll have to re-heat it. You said the video is going out back and fourth right? Yup thats your best bet. I'll post a video on how to fix that problem later. Its not the inverter because the inverter box is only responsible for the backlighting in the laptop and nothing else.

@BlackCaScorpio It can be the inverter, LCD or LCD cable. If you get power out external then the video chip is fine.

@MrLaptopTech I've actually changed out both the lcd inverter and the lcd screen with brand new ones and still the same problem. The lcd will stay light up, but its just light up black. So I'm confused as to if there would be to video chips, cause external display works all the time.

@BlackCaScorpio Then you most likely have a short in your LCD cable. It is unlikely that the video chip is the problem if your external display works 100%

@MrLaptopTech Yeah I was actually told by someone on ebay that the DV4 series had a recall for defective lcd cables. I couldn't find it though. Another user in the HP forums reported that if he'd press in the area where the cable runs above the keyboard, his display would come back on. I guess HP did a bad job of routing the lcd cable through the hinges. So buying a new lcd cable is my last resort before scrapping the laptop. Thanks for the information.

@BlackCaScorpio I am unaware of a recall for that issue but many model laptops over time will develop problems with the LCD cable because of how they route it thru to the LCD from the base. The other users problem is most likely a loose LCD cable if pushing down just above the F1-F4 keys helps, this is the most common area that LCD cables connect to the motherboard so in his case, he might not need parts. just needs to reseat the cable with care as some cables have small pins inside the harness.

Sounds like your inverter box went out... They're usually found under the screen of the laptop.... A replacement on eBay shouldn't cost more that $10.

@mariox402 Most likely LCD inverter....small chance CCFL tubes which is what people are calling the backlight...althought the CCFL tubes are always found on the sides, bottom or top of the LCD. ; )

Hi can you pls help me, i have a Sony Vaio . I can turn it on and it works but, after a 10 to 15 minutes the screen turns black. I've change the power management setting all to never, still it keeps turning to black screen.
I can normally shut it down while the screen still okey but when turn it on again it cannot start, the power is lit but screen is black.
One more thing i've notice when i connect the power adapter or any usb, the screen shuts off.

your an idiot. you didn't ground yourself, you unscrewed your RAM cover then turned your computer over, let your RAM sit out of it's anti-static casing on top of your computer, installed mismatched RAM, made contact with the gold pins, and turned your computer over without screwing in the RAM cover. why is it that your computer had no RAM to begin with??? noob

hi, i have a compaq presario f700. The screen was black and at first it sounded like the computer was tryng to turn on and would last for a second, go off and then try again. i removed the battery and the power and hold down the power button for 60 seconds. now the hp flashes on like it is going to start and then i get a blinking hypen. then the hypen disappears. At least now I know that the screen works, but i don't know why nothing happens after the hyphen disappears, can you help me?

i also read somewhere about removing the battery and unplug power cord,hold down power button for 30 seconds.it removes static electricty or something.
then put the battery back and the screen would work when started.

I will remember that for later use. I have a problem with my old Dell 5100 laptop which turns on normally, but I get the blank screen after about 15 minutes. When I close the screen and open it again it comes back on for about 5 minutes then the screen goes blank again. I took it apart once to clean out any dust in it with liquid air, but still have the problem. It has to be hardware which is the problem.

See what happens for my laptop, is that when I turn it on it will go through everything and once it gets to the starting windows page and then the whole screen goes black. I have tried to start up in safe mode, but that doesnt seem to work. The computer isn't frozen either, because I can still move the cursor. I really need to figure this out. I hope you can help.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5100 and the computer comes on and works great for awhile then it goes blank and if you close the cover then open it the screen comes back on temporarily then goes blank once more. This happened once before after my cat got on it.
