I love this song unfortunately I was at the Arizona state industrial school at Bonita az called Ft. Grant but I still rocked while I was inside at 16.
Groups mentioned in this song: The Youngbloods, The Byrds, The Jefferson Airplane, Hugh Masakela, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Ravi Shankar, Grateful Dead,...ya wanna find the truth in life don't pass music by.
WOW! This mono mix totally SHAMES the stereo album mix! Punchier bass and drums, and an altogether more urgent feel than the stereo. I like how, for the single edit, they simply used the full intro, minus the fade-in from the absent "In The Beginning" intro from the LP version! Amazing how the mono mixes of all these classic bear such sonic revelation. Guess it just HAD TO to get across on AM radio.
In November of 1967 when this song was released I was 13 years old (was I really that young once!?) and didn't know squat about what was happening music-wise let alone the nation and the world, but I had a feeling that shattering things were going on around me. Whenever I hear this song I feel the same passion and energy that flooded my being back then when I heard it on the radio and remember that I wasn't so dumb at all.

Thank you Sid for this post.
This song has been a long time favorite of mine.
Music was so much better back in them ol' days.
Great post my man.
Keep up the good work.
