I am sad. Elphaba was protecting the lion when he was younger, and If I recall correctly, she was trying to help the woodsmen when she turned him into a tin man.

@123fuzzen lol the book was different. the tin man was a supposable side effect from an enchanted axe nessarose made for a local munchkin.
