My dad told me one time to write something happy. I refrained from dropping the emo bomb "I can't write happy songs if I am not." So, I just waited until I was in a place where I felt inspired to do so and I wrote something optimistic. My dad loved it. But my best stuff comes in the darkest moments, I've found. And I won't for one second sacrifice in one of those moments the potential creation of a great song in order to please the needs of some one else.
