Yes, if Martina had the added power she would be UNPLAYABLE! Hingis is my all time favourite player. Another one to watch, if she can become more consistent is Kvitova.
@justnatural you are soooooooo wrong..Hingis is better than Henin..hingis is a classy, smart kind of player and has the most beautiful footwork in female tennis history,CIijsters rely only on power and i really dont find Henin backhand is attractive
kevin12061989, she won them because of too much racquet technology. this allows you to work less and not play real tennis. you're biased and need to be open minded, especially when it's the truth or something's fishy. then travel and hear that many have heard that many of those "13" slams she won were fixed, to keep the usa winning and ranked high. nunchaued, stosur and everyone else not serena, have TECHNIQUE. That is real tennis. But the racquet technology is burying this.
Hingis is such a great champion. Her game was one of a kind and there is no denying that she belongs to one of the greats! You can't say that she's not a legend just because she dosen't possess the power of her peers. She just has a DIFFERENT style and she uses her talent well. Evert wasn't physically strong either and she is always counted to the greatests so why can't Hingis be one of them?
I think Hingis is great, she has a very smart game. Though I'm not a big fan of hers, but i do enjoy watching her play, like a magician, so acurate. Watching her play you can just feel the beauty of tennis. And considering her physical condition, she is the smallest in size and the least powerful lady of all the great champions in history. She represents a unique type of tennis that no one else comes close.
Don't count the williams sisters, they should have an ASTERISK. The tour in the past years have really grown in talent and ability (though nowhere near the Graf era and before that) and are now better than the williams sisters, yet the williams still manage to win some. Many say that it's because they don't play real schedules and only show up at the majors, many feel it is because of the racquets causing too much power, others flat out say it is because the sisters are such men. True.
Yes, the game today gets a boost from Kim and Justine. I'm being realistic from the ones still recent and not really close to actual retirement, although if you want to have an ideal list of what tennis needs, it would be Justine, Kim but also Graf, Navratilova, Sabatini, that whole era.
of all tennis ive watched live Hingis was always the most boring, only some of her matches she had with Lindsay were good cause lindsay made the play......... i dont think the game misses Martina at all...... I think Kim and Justine coming back is what the game needed
@justnatural wow how can someone say that the game doesn't miss martina?? she was the most creative player ever!! Henin has a great backhand, but what has Clijsters?? I'll tell you, NOTHING. Clijsters is just an overrated player who just won 1 US Open in 2005, and later in 2009 but that doesn't count because the WTA right now is a shit.
after loosing like a cowet at French Open 99,,Hingis never have any best tennis again like a true champions, its different! like Graf, Navratilova,ASV, Wiliams sisters, or Justine,,They are sorong and more stronger!
Meh, the Williams sisters just have amazing mentality, probably the best mentality that a tennis player has ever had, especially Serena, but technically they're inferior to half of the top 50, and not even power, because the power index says that Sam Stosur and Jelena Dokic are the 1st and 2nd most powerful players out there, Serena is 3rd. Yeh the others, Martina will never have a career like them, but she is still my favourite player, and many others' favourite, because there are reasons to.
u r comparing serena with stosur n dokic? i'm sorry but as hard as they hit, if they cant string together points like serena can they shouldn't be compared. as much as i like stosur's killer kick serve she will be on her back foot playing serena any given day. as for dokic, im sorry but i have nothing to say. let her 13 GS speak for themselves thks :)
martina ... all of us want you back ... we dont care if you won't win matches ('cuz we know you would) ... just as long as we see you play, it's already good enough ... :D
Womens tennis can use more players like Martina. I always was a big fan of Martina, but I didn't like the fact she used cocaine. So it was smart of her to stop with tennis, otherwise she was suspended for 2 years anyway. But womens tennis is bad right now, so much mistakes and so few good tennis. Power rules the game. And that's fine, if it was well executed like men's tennis. Love to watch players like Del Potro. Women's tennis must improve very much, so it's a good thing Clijsters came back.
I think after Henin gone there is a big empty place. The tragedy of the women' s tennis is that few players are using their head anymore they all seem to think slugging th ball as hard as you can is all you have to do. Henin was the last brilliant tactitian in the game who used the power of her rival (especially Serena) against them. And she definitely had a class, too.
The women's tennis is missing a player with class and with incredible tennis. But unfortunately the women's tennis have changed with the arrival of the sisters to the game and I dont think it will change. It is all about power...
you make it seem like the arrival of the williams sisters is a bad thing, they raised the bar real high when they came on the scene, and forced everyone to step up their game, thus making tennis better. but i do agree with you that tennis now is all about power, not enough technically sound players out there anymore.
By playing as powerful as some male players in the tournament, in fact the sisters changed the game in a bad way. Would they have won all those titles without their power?? Maybe not, we will never know. They are excellent players, but I think a lot of their wins are because they overpower a lot of the players out there, not because they are much superior to them. Sharapova said she would become like a man in order to win titles and I think other players think the same.
they didn't ruin tennis , tennis was ultimately was gonna go in that direction, you can't put the blame on them, but look at some players we have now that have good tennis like radwanska, wozniacki, i still believe women's tennis is getting better, and people like you shouldn't be putting down the williams sisters when they obviously did a good thing.
Putting them down?? I told the are excellent players. what is the problem with you..
Radwanska and Wozniacki will never win a Grand Slam if they do not play exactly the new players are doing. A lot of power, powerful serves and powerful groundstrokes. I think you dont know what u talking about..
Williams vs Hingis was one of the greatest rivalries ever because the Wiliams used their power and Hingis was still able to outworked them with her creativity so the fact that they all had their own strenght was exciting to watch.
not that it was their intention, but it's absurd to say the Williams sisters "raised the bar....forced everyone to step up their game." on the contrary, they forced everyone to just hit hard & grunt. the past couple years have been the lowest point in women's tennis: a bunch of grunting, no-name wanna-be's who just hit the ball hard, whoever makes the least amt of errors wins (YAWN).no thought,no strategy.when u watch Steffi v Monica@AustralianOpen1993,you'll get my point; brilliant tennis is gone.
It's not that people don't WANT to play elegantly and aim for no errors, but when they see someone play like Serena and Venus playing in 4 consecutive slam finals together, a lot of people will emulate that style.
Look at the top 10; most of them are offensive because that is the style that works. now if martina hingis and her technically sound shots blew Serena and Venus off the court every single time, then it's a different story.
@dirtyfishydishcloth The William sisters have raised the bar! We now have more women serving 100mph+ serves than they ever did in the past. For u to make such a dumb statement, shows that u do not watch women's tennis closely. However, I DO MISS HINGIS & WOULD LOVE TO SEE HER COME BACK.
You're the one who doesn't know what he's talking about. NO PRO TENNIS PLAYER CAN WIN GS ON POWER ALONE!! One has to have a certain amount of finesse in her game to win any major tournaments. I think that your comments are not only condescending & disrespectful to the William sisters but also to all the other female tennis players. U may fool everbody else but your remarks don't fool me. I KNOW THE REAL REASON WHY U REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE WOMEN'S TENNIS & IT'S NOT BECAUSE OF POWER!!
I didn't say that. I do agree they need to be very good players. The sisters are excellent players, but they do win a lot of matches, because the other players, specially new ones cannot handle the power of their groundstrokes. Martina herself commented on that too. If power didnt play a major part in the sisters' game Venus wouldn't have straps tightened around her wrists and Serena wouldn't have so much muscles.Their serve is as powerful as some man's serves.
@paulinolondon you're just angry at them because they outlasted your fave Martina and will have more signifance in tennis history than her. you're angry because they proved that over years, they were better than her and that pisses you of. simple as that
That is why you see a lot of boring matches in the women's game, because is one side serving over 120mph and the other side just watching the ball flying past. Martina tried a come back could not cope with the power therefore did not make a successful come back. On the other hand the man's game is much more balanced in terms of power and therefore their differences rely on their tennis abilities. I believe that is why there is so much more competition in the man's game.
C'mon Paul, most women including the William sisters don't serve 120mph on average. When the women do serve that fast, it is an oddity. The average serve is between 100mph-120mph for women. I'm not trying to take anything from Hingis and I do miss her; however, there is a lot of competition in the women's game & it's a shame that they don't get the credit they deserve.
me too. pity for the women's tennis these days.i remember once the magazine wrote "hingis is like a woman who try to slow a ball with a feather duster".
i will turn the channel if watching sharapova & serena. hope they will replace the racket with ladle, broom stick, javelin, rake & hit each other with the fierce grunt....lol

her shots were the most graceful, and fluid, lots of people today play very hard and heavy. haven't you seen her drop shot from the baseline? jeez... and haven't heard davenport stating that mauresmo played, "like a man." (no offense, just because she's a lesbian, but she did play very much like a man)
wow you're really taking my comment out of perspective, jeez, just calm down, shut up, i was just voicing my opinion. i used to word "people," if you didn't read, apparently that only applies to men now? you asked what a feminine player would look like playing, that was hingis, does anyone look like hingis when they play on the court? no, so that's the only point that i really wanted to make, you took it, and took words out of my mouth, don't argue with me, because you're just going to lose

That beautiful baseline drop shot you're talking about, I've seen many other players do the same today! There is no such thing as playing like a man/woman!! This is a sport not crotchet.
@mssheltn1 give an example? Hingis disguised her's very well.. Radwanska, the so called, "drop shot queen," of this generation has good drop shots, if they work, HOWEVER, they are totally readable, and attack-able.... disrespectful to your opinion but that is the craziest thing I've ever heard. IDK if u ever played tennis or not but it's incredibly hard to hit base & side lines w/heavy top spin or slice w/out going out. The Williams & Sharapova are masterminds of this; furthermore, most of the top women can do this effectively. Some better than others. ANYBODY CAN HIT ACCURATE SLOW BALLS(60-80MPH) ON LINES. Koounna further explains this. I agree that Hingis is great.
@mssheltn1 okay, sorry, your past comment was very blunt, so I took it that way. I am actually an avid tennis player, played it throughout high school, and a little in college, I'm only 21, but I know how difficult it is to hit a huge ball, I can't hit a drop shot for crap, so I never attempt it, or barely, if my slice turns into a mishit... lol, but yeah, hingis just knew the court and game well.... by the way, players have their signature style, and hingis had a good one, so do the williams
I wish Martina had the strength of Serena and the grit of Justine, then she would have won every major there was!
