this show gives me so many memories, when my grandparents were alive, and all we did was have dinners together while watching this show. We were all young, thin, with money, and happy.
TV will never be the same. Nowadays, all they show is sex, ass, and half naked women. Oh and don't forget the strong profanity in every sentence! And they wonder why the world is getting worse!!!
the phone was owned by the phone company unless you bought your phone and hooked it up yourself. My mother had a wall phone was installed in the 50's and was finally turned back in to the phone company in the 90's. Best phone we ever had. it never tore up. We've been through at least a dozen "store bought" phones since then. they just don't make quality phones anymore. The old phones were indestructable.
So when they disconnect your phone service, they take the phone? I never heard of this. So I guess that means they only had one phone. One phone!? I know it's the 80s but people could afford more than one phone back then.
@grogtgs back in the 70's and 80's the phone company used to rent phones to people and add the charge to the monthly phone bill...much like cable tv companies now rent the cable boxes to their customers.
Why would people rent a phone from the phone company instead of just buying one from the store? It seems cheaper than paying for one every month on the bill.
@hfranco2007 Well, Back in the 80's some telephone companies rented out telephones, I think it was mostly local telephone companies, not the big companies like AT&T, and back then MCI.
@hfranco2007 I rented my phone from the phone company all throughout the 90's. If it broke your would just exchange it. It seems strange today but was common then
Ever notice the parallel between this show and Family Matters? The father cop, the brainiac daughter (Julie - equivalent to Laura), the doofy kid (Samantha - equivalent to Steve Irkel), and the love machine (Katie - equivalent to Eddie)? Only thing missing is the mom - but I think Nell covered that fine - and the younger sister (but she was booted off Family Matters pretty early in the series).
I have one question. Do you think you can find the episode where Nell was baby sitting like a hundred kids and at the end they all sang What The World Needs Now? I love that episode. It was one of my favorite.
My older sister Patsy had the same personality like Nell Carter. My sister had just about the same problems like Nell. She died in Feb. 2007. I miss my sister. They both will be missed...RIP.
I wish they had shown the woman Nell and Angie were gossiping about-she sounds..."unique"LOL "Her hair is so short ,you can SMELL her Brains"-LOL LOL

I love it when the telephone guy takes the Danish too. I think he must've been a hungry worker that didn't make a lot of money.
