if you had bothered to actually tighten the battery terminals that helps, and continually pumping the gas pedal puts far too much fuel into the intake so it will cause it to ignite before it gets into the carb which is what you had going on, thats not a backfire.Backfire is unburnt fuel getting in the exhaust and igniting there.
That's not electrical problems. That was someone who didn't know what the hell they were doing and went crazy with wire strippers and butt connectors. Whenever I come across a car like that, I run away!
@hyde20082142 lol... as stated its a 1988 dodge b150 van with a 318 that is fuel injected and has computer timing control... and the timing was set fine. the problem is it is backfiring through a burnt intake valve judging by the chugging misfire under a load and BOOM goes the fuel vapor in the intake from a lack of vacuum to suck the flame back into the cylinders.
No shit it's got electrical problems, if you guys are gonna put that much aftermarket wiring everywhere for no reason. That nice wood trim that you put holes in? That stuff sells for a couple hundred new. The engine itself is unbreakable, just replace the starter/battery and check the timing.
That wiring is a nightmare for me.But from the engine i will bet it had a bad timing chain thats the reason for the backfiring.Or either the distributator was turned to slow.Either way the motor was very fixable.I have put in a many of timing chain sets hard starting and lack of power are all symptoms of it.318s are dodges best motor besides the slant 6..
Wow my old 1967 dodge truch had a slant and it made 127 horse power. And it would pull a very heavy loaded truck full of roofing shingles and let me say they are heavy. Why dodge reduced the power on newer model 6s is a mistery to me.I love old stuff anyway..
Yeah, but ya gotta work your way up to the big motors, or you won't be able to start them in the cold, either. Dodges are cold-blooded b^stards & the bigger the motor, the harder they start in the cold.
Please tell me that was not a 318 you took to the junkyard, that and the 360 were the best and longest lasting small blocks chrysler made! I have a 1993 ram van(318) with 215,000 miles and it still runs like its brand new.
Gee, as slow as that thing was cranking, maybe a fresher battery woulda helped? Good job, though. POS Dodges start every time!! See my vids under vf4000
If you take care of shit it will run for you. In this case it is apparent whoever worked on it his Head was up his big dark hole

Moron. Doesn't need a vehicle - pump the gas for a dead battery.

@aivilik bigger motors are not harder to start in the cold. only ones with old carburetors that are stopped up and the choke doesnt work.
