can you tell me how many of these were made and what the "M' stands for, I have just bought one of these and I am told they are rare but I would like to know how many were made and what engines were put in them. I am told this one I bought had a hallscott in it.
Ran a '67 long nose back in the 70s - seems like this one is std length from the looks of it, although thr 1693TA would have needed the longer nose. One bad motor though - turn up the pump and presto; 32 pounds of boost and buh-bye!
Also an extremely quiet motor under load even if they rattled real good at idle.
Took a hard look, see you're right; the extension is in the cowl so it takes a std butterfly hood. Sure wish I could see it from the saddle 'cause the view is gorgeous - a beautiful rig (though I favor 10 hole Budds).
The 1693 was the successor to the 1676 V-8 diesel, which also was a twin-overhead-cam design. The 1676 was essentially similar to the original 1673 six-banger (not the later 1673C/1674/3306) due to its 4.5" bore and 5.5" stroke; as a V-8 diesel, it displaced 11.5 liters/700 cubic inches.
These motors were very good motors. The only downside i know of is that it costs a fortune to rebuild them. If i had money, i would stick this in our 65 freightliner.
The reason for the clatter at idle is because these motors are indirect injected, in other words they are a pre-combustion motor just like some of the 3408's and 3406A's are. One difference between the 3406A and the 1693 is that you can get jake brakes for the 3406A, you can't for the 1693.
I like seeing the round profiled 5 hole rims. I just bought a 62 model 351 and am trying to find as much period correct hardware for it's restoration as I can. I managed to find one pair of 5 hole rims and a pair of the old style 10 holes. Now I need a narrow bumper and a butterfly visor. I just joined the ATHS too. We have the same tastes, Peterbilts, Trans Am racing and Mustangs. To see my Pete project, go to my U tube page and at the bottom of my profile is a link to it (website URL).
Detroit stole this motors basic design for the 60 series. thats why they "clatter" the same. except for the electronics/injection and a 1 piece head they are very very similar..so similar in fact Cat sued Detroit for copyright infringement!!!!!
The only reason this thing clatters a lot is because these motors are pre-combustion, in other words it's indirect injected where the 60 series is direct injected. It's like comparing a 6.9 IDI ford diesel V8 and a Powerstroke. The powerstroke is Direct injected and the 6.9 IDI isn't. They both sound different.
The Series 60 was originally supposed to have been made by John Deere, but the tooling and engineering rights to it were turned over to Detroit Diesel for production and sale.
well thats what I had heard too , the man who designed the 1693, left Cat to go to JD, the 60 and the 1693 both sound too much alike,, pre cup or direct has nothing to do with that rattle, and besides that it wasn't like Detroit shit the bluprints to a Million plus mile 4 stroke engine all by theirself,,
and I have caught some flack over the previous comments I've posted about the suj,,, but I know I'm right,,,
I never said Detroit took a 1693 and painted it Alpine Green,,,
Wow those rattle. Sounds like an engine that is started cold with a lot of ether. Sounds cool, though. My C15 is quite a bit quieter than that. The 3406' sound great, too. :D

It's not a good angle. It is a factory long hood.

Although you can't get jake heads for these, they still sounded very good with straight pipes.

Where on earth did you ever hear that ??!?
The 1693 Cat and the 60 series DD
have no more in common than black does with white.
Have YOU...ever tore down Both of these engines ??? I have.....they have
absolutely Nothing in common, other than they both have crankshafts, pistons, duel overhead camshafts, liquid cooling, oil and burn diesel fuel.
Nothing that they don't both share with
every other 4 cycle engine..except duel
camshafts.

Do you know who David F. Merrion is???
I wasn't saying Detroit painted the 1693 Alpine green and called it a 60 series
and yes not only have I tore both engines down, I rebuilt them too,,, :-P
and it's dual BTW
TheDieselDr 3 years ago
60 series Detroit does not have dual cams... Cummins ISX has dual cams.

You have no idea whatsover about anything "diesel" you are uneducated & cocky. Come back when you actually have some knowledge about diesel engines.

Both are overhead-cam designs, if you are wondering. Same for Cat's 1676 V-8.

That idle RPM is bad but the engine is great.
And the truck aswell
