The officer on duty or off duty is irrelevant. He clearly over reacted. It was absolutely improper and gives citizens the impression of a "bully with a badge." Marsmud1989, uniformed or not the detective should be well aware of gun laws. As a gun owner you MUST know these. The law says that unless there is a clear & present danger to your life you are not to legally able pull your gun on someone. I agree with you that there could've been something the camera was missing - however, the cop clearly stated in the news report I watched that he had been "hit with a snowball", which is not probable cause nor is a threat to a life.

From other reports I understand it was an undercover detective. That would explain the fact he wasn't in a uniform. I don't think any news source at this time has enough information. This story probably has more to it, I'm sure that an official wouldn't draw his firearm without probable cause. However a clear rationale should be presented, perhaps a protestor became violent. And in order to have reason or rationale to draw your firearm I don't think a threat to your life has to be presented.
