baraks interpretation of the bible is quite frankly, wrong. Some of the new testament refutes the old, such as the stoning example brought up. John 8: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"
How is it that as a nation, the majority is trying to become the very thing they despise? The majority despises how prevalent religion is in the Middle East, the rules they follow, how they treat women, children, etc. Yet, they are willing to put money, time and effort into doing the same exact thing here? It really doesn't matter how evil you think Isalm to be. The majority and the "enemy" are really just two sides of the same coin.
Originally the U.S. was meant to be a neutral slate. A place where everyone could be free to be religious and non religious. It's why it's known as "the land of the free". But now because of pressure from theists over the centuries, we're left with religious crap sewin in to the fabric of the U.S. such as "In god we trust" on coins and "under god" in the pledge of allegance.
Go Obama! I love the fact that OUR president addresses the issues that we don't all believe in a god! It's ok. You can wipe your mouth when your done freaking out.
Im completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.
Well said. There's also that quote about how "absolute power corrupts absolutely". What other institutions besides religion and government have embodied that statement so well?
Right on.Melissa230984 " The purpose of separation of church & state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe in blood for centuries. " Pres. James Madison Few Americans realise just HOW BLOODY it was during the reformastion.
There are plenty of nations that were Christian nations in the 18th centruy. America is great because of it's innovation and social promise NOT becasue it is sometimes controlled by Christians zealots. But isn't that more satisfying? It should be asource of pride that it was through the actions of mortal people that America became great, not because of supernatural beings.
One day it will be revealed that Barack Obama was, or is, a Non-believer. I am ready to bet on that! I think he's using the cover of the closet to implement a secularist agenda. The spirit of Thomas Jefferson be with him! Did you notice how he's using the same rhetoric as so many atheists use to show that the bible is full op crap? These are like the atheists favorite passages of the bible! :-)
Obama has to be one of the smartest presidents you americans will ever know. He rocks and i'm glad he didn't beg around for the religious fundy vote, fuck those lot hope they all fuck off to their own planet and get off mine.
What a scary thought for you guys. Having people who believe in magic and fairy tales running your country and at the same time controlling the worlds largest military arsenal.
Taylor, I agree and I said that Christianity is not the reason these ideals exist. But I know too many Christians who believe the biggest reason to be a good person an respectful of others is because it mirrors Christ and they want to go to heaven. I in know way think all American presidents should be Christian. I was just trying to explain why I think McCain's view can be explained, not that he was right. He is equating moral decency with Christianity. Which can be done but is not legit.
PS - I am not condoning Christianity one way or the other or saying it is really a religion that teaches tolerance and decency, because though it LOOKS TO I think it often does the opposite.
2. so America's gov't is not Christian, but a lot of Christian ideals are behind the founders intentions because, especially through recent history the majority of Americans are Christian as the majority of Indians are hindi etc.
3. I think I've proven that you misconstrued my agenda and I was not refuting this. I can just understand why it's not so VILE that McCain feels that Christianity (its ideals, not practice) does have some relevance to our gov't.
2. What Christian ideals? Love, freedom, and charity? How are these exclusively Christian ideals? Sure, most Americans today are Christian, but that tells us nothing about how our country was founded.
3. Misconstrued your agenda? Not at all, I was merely basing my reply on what you wrote and the context of this video. The fact is that America is more diverse in religious views than it was back in colonial days, so we need to move past the American = Christian thing now.
Taylor, it will not let me reply to you but 1) I do not mean Christian doctrine, I meant the moral attitude of Christianity which is really just common decency toward others, and even other religions carry this, but being that they were Christians these ideas were in their heads. It is ignorant to say they were not. And it does not mean things should be done in a Christian way, I just mean I see how what he's saying can be seen as true.
2. I didnt say there other religious GOVS but majorities..
Common decency toward others is not exclusive to Christianity or to religion, as you pointed out, but although some of the founders were certainly Christians, many of them also were not. Jefferson, Paine, Franklin, and several others were very open about being Deists.
Reynolds v. United States in 1878 made separation of church and state a legitimate point of case law.
"Can a man excuse his practices to the contrary because of his religious belief? [98 U.S. 145, 167] To permit this would be to make the professed doctrines of religious belief superior to the law of the land, and in effect to permit every citizen to become a law unto himself."
This is not in the Constitution and more importantly, it declares marriage can be regulated by statute
I think as far as religious tendencies go, that McCain is one of the most moderate republicans out there. I am an agnostic and I would also agree that America was founded under Christian principles, there is no doubt about it. I wouldn't go so far as to say the president has to be a Christian, but there are so many nations with a majority religion and nobody gets as frustrated about it as we do in America. YES we have alot of diversity, but people will always be staunch about their religion.
religion ar absoluty seperated. Obama is a very intelligent and smart president with a own opinion - hope he win the election -for USA und the rest of the world
-"OR OR OR... HEY check this out.. maby.. just maby.. HE DOESNT FUCKING EXIST.. HE DOES NOT AS A MATTER OF FACT DOESNT EXIST HE DOESNT EXIST HE DOESNT...AND I U ARE A GROWN UP BELIEVING IN A GOD... ur just a dumb fucktard holding humanity back intellectually
"this does not include religious people who keep their religions to them selves."
Wow, there are so many errors in what was written here I don't know where to start. Get an education and then say your thoughts. You're embarassing yourself.
McCain better not win this election. He disagrees with all my viewpoints. He'll die during his first term, leaving fundamentalist Sarah Palin as president.
@ltgrandmaps3I AM an Atheist, & was a Republican back when they were fiscally responsible. Eight years of Bush 2 s fiscal idiocy, encouraged by the Rep.party showed me the error of my ways. It will take 20 years to undo his stupid, unnecessary invasion of Iraq, because he wanted to be a WARTIME Pres.
If in the begining there was only god... then didnt god create the devil ?
And then isnt god just a evil fucktard ?
OR OR OR... HEY check this out.. maby.. just maby.. HE DOESNT FUCKING EXIST.. HE DOES NOT AS A MATTER OF FACT DOESNT EXIST HE DOESNT EXIST HE DOESNT...AND I U ARE A GROWN UP BELIEVING IN A GOD... ur just a dumb fucktard holding humanity back intellectually :)
"this does not include religious people who keep their religions to them selves."
Why are everyone in america so obsessed with "the founding fathers".. why does the founding fathers opinion even matter ?
In sweden we never speak of our "founding fathers"... we have moved on.. and one other thing we have moved on from.. we have moved on from religion. sweden are 80+% atheists.. america are 80+%religious..not the exact numbers ofc.. because its hard for me to believe that 80 % of america are believing morons..its just not possible.. i think that there are more athe tha it sems
I don't think it's even close to 80% of our country that believe in god. It's more than half, yes, but there are also a lot of people who feel uncomfortable with calling themselves atheists, because of retarded social stigmatisms.
About the founders, I think people in America reference them a lot, because our Constitution is not always clear in some cases. So it is helpful to take the founders' own words and times into account, when interpretting the law.
yea.. i mean..as Richard dawkins said: its beyond belief that all americans are believers,
atleast some of the americans must be educated intelligent people :P so i think they are over exadurating the numbers of religious people in america :)
@436214 LOL. As an Atheist in this hotbed of Xianity I concur. I've visited Sweden & greatly appreciated your secular country. Only wish we would see things your way.
Seperate church and state, my friends, the founding fathers themselves demand we do. Speculation and unproven ideas have nothing to do with law and basic human rights.
Attention voters; There is a Republican representative from Texas who I have found to be a very intelligent and articulate man, and just as honest as a politician! ...No not George W! His name is RON PAUL! As of September 22nd, 2008, Ron Paul has officially endorsed Chuck Baldwin, candidate of the Constitution Party. So Americans I implore you, let us rid ourselves of the two party system once and for all. Support Ron Paul! Vote for Chuck Baldwin! Support the Revolution ;)
So much for the whole "Thous shalt not kill" and "Thou Shalt not lie" ~Hypocrites just like the people who vote for these war mongering faither's who think there was some kind of exception written somewhere.
"in god we trust" wasn't from the founding fathers. It was added to our currency in the 50's (during the "commie scare"), which previously said "e pluribus unum".
Think about it. America was founded by people trying to escape from England's over integration of the church in government.
Minor correction to darkwolf228's point: "in god we trust" was actually first added to our currency at the end of the civil war, due to increased religious sentiment. However, it was only adopted as our national motto in the '50s, during the "commie scare."
Likewise, "under god" was added to the pledge of allegiance (which itself had its origins in the civil war) during the 50's red scare.
In any case, it had nothing to do with the principles upon which our country was founded.
So, this is The proof that McCain doesn't know JACK about politics and American history.
- He saiz here that the founders pushed the "Christian Nation" idea many times by making reality of things like "In God we trust". Was that not added After the declaration?
And it sounds like he was about to mention the "One nation under God" thing as well, but since he was around and remembers the added "under God" (1954) I guess he stopped himself.
What a fucking moron. John, how's your ABC's? 123's?
I think he came from the planet Logic, where freedom and liberty are the most important things. I think that people from the planet logic are called, um , patriots yeah thats right patriots.
Well, wishful thinking if you feel atheists have ever even made a dent in any Presidential election. I bet there are more gays than atheists, (just a reminder to where you stand.)
Unlike religious zealots, I don't feel like I need a strictly atheist president to be happy and free. Just someone who isn't an idiot and who recognizes freedom of religion means freedom FROM religion too. It's no secret that some people would sooner elect a gay president than an atheist one, but does that bother me? Not in the slightest. The president is hardly a grand position of power anyway.
UNless about 20% of the us population is gay then I dont think your logic is justified. Using the definition of "god" and atheist. Or are you talking about those who come out and just use the label atheist. Or those who use other labels, jainist, agnostic, bright, and secular humanist.
Dice and slice it however you want to put it.... You're still a very tiny percent. And you can save your time trying to dig up some statistics to prove me otherwise...
Lets look at it this way. 50% of religious people go democrat 50 % or so go Republican.
Majority of all Non religious people call them what you want go Democrat. (their are some non religious Republicans out their but its a small number) This election is going to be very interesting. Plus MCcain doesnt have the right winged CHristian vote completly. So it is going to be very interesting.
I think it gets a little "trickier" than that.. Without much thought, I think a large number of Baptists vote Republican - the whole South.. A lot of Catholics vote democrat - North East.. And then a mixture for the rest, except for California, I don't think that they even have any churches out there, do they?
But as far as a religious point of view, it may be about how the Catholics and Jews vote too.. And by the way, some atheists, might vote republican? I don't know...
Some atheists will vote republican. But thats only a handfull. A couple thousand in all the united states. Bush had a huge religious vote in 00 and 04 which MCcain doesnt have now. Jews make up less than like .002 of the population. Muslims same thing.
I'm one of the few (atheist)that today would vote for McCain over Obama. Personally I love Obama's social views including his quotes on the Bible. However I do see McCain as a more Moderate (almost liberal) Republican. Which is great for me because it's so hard to vote for Democrats with the proposed tax increases in todays economy. And in the end the economy is kind of like winning in sports. As long as you're winning (ie stable/booming economy), then everything else falls in to place.
Do you know what the Republicans want to do with your rights. Do you know what they have said and still say about Atheists. McCain is an old man who is going senile fast. I think you have valid points, however I feel you are betraying yourself and giving atheists a bad name. IF you are that easy to crumble to those who hate you, Id prefer if you called yourself a christian and just get it over with.
I know Republicans want to do a lot of things socially. Doesn't mean it's going to happen. I mean 5 terms of Republican presidents since 1984 and a new conservative supreme court justice and yet Roe vs Wade still hasn't been overturned. Gay marriage will come, all of the other social stuff atheist are fighting for will come. Ironcially in some ways extreme evangelicals help the cause in part b/c when people see others with the same beliefs acting like idiots they question their own beliefs.
In the end maybe I am going against the grain with most of atheism, but part of the reason I became an atheist was to think for myself not to find a new group of people to tell me what to do. I wish we had a better forum to debate this as the character count keeps dwindling down but I'll get back to my main point. Anyway my reasons are to numerous to list in these post but from what I've seen so far. IMO McCain's admin will be better for this country then Obama (granted no Romney VP for McCain)
Your reasons are because of taxes and a form of faith? DO you understand what the president gets to do? He gets to appoint a Justice. Do you know what justices do? They interpret law. And you fool want to destroy almost 30 or so years of secular law brought forth by fighting atheists, while you think you relized something. You sir are an idiot and know nothing about the old man McCain. And you show republicans that atheists dont matter because they will vote for those who hate them.
Are you kidding me? You're very similar to the so called Christians you criticize. Instead of debating the points you choose to insult me personally and mock me for not being a true atheist. Which if there is such a thing, then I want no part of it as it looks like a whole new form of dogma and anyone who doesn't agree is an "idiot." Sound familiar? Bush the most "evangelical" president ever wasn't able to overturn abortion nor was he able to push ID and school prayer.
Anyway as far as reasons are concerned I believe for starters that economics 101 says you don't raise taxes in a bear market. On top of that states have much more power when it comes to the social issues, as certain states have pro-life and pro-choice laws ready in the (unlikely) case of Roe vs Wade being overturned. Yes the supreme court sets the tempo but in cases like this the states have the final say as to what the actual laws will be.
I guess you make over 250k a year and are afraid of the taxe increase? I personally am looking forward to Obama's taxe relief for lower to middle class people, including myself. Obama WILL raise the rich man's taxes, and wealthy people will have to pay more for our country and they will uphold its greatness. McCain will decrease taxes for rich people, in his words "important american families". So I guess you are one of 'those' important people then. Your choice to care about others.
It's more then the tax increase. First the national health care system is hopefully a bluff. If you read the horror stories from Canada, the UK, and France you will see that the US is pretty well off. Unless you're willing to wait 19.5 weeks to see a specialist.Canada's Politicans were praising their NHCare system one minute and then coming to America for care the next. It doesn't work. Being someone who had their skull eroded I would have to say that timely health care was a truly fortunate
aspect of this countries infurstructure. Of course in England if you're in you're 60's and dying and have a chance to extend you're life with an operation the government will review you're case. Then after much deliberation they'll have to turn you down because they have to manage cost and this operation isn't a slam dunk so sorry you have to die. Also with bed sheets they turn them over so they can save money on laundry cost. No choice, long waits, shitty care. Good idea!
The tax increase is targeting rich people who should help support their country, the other 90% of the population will get a decrease.
As for health care, I support it. I rather see people wait in line for a year to get help, than never get help at all or just get pushed into debt because of bad luck. We are a civilized country, prime of the world. Why don't we start acting like benevolent animals and take care of eachother when we need to? If we just focused money into positive channels...
On top of the fact that you won't get quality care, you'll also have to make up for the drop in quality among doctors since the incentives to become doctors will be less attractive due to lower pay combined with the huge amount of cost to complete medical school. Also remember that doctors research Cancer and AID's if you lower the quality there then the research in those fields will suffer. Find a middle ground for health care, don't try to find a cure all that hasn't worked.
A unitarian isnt a political position its a religious position. Basically a very liberal christian. No I havnt looked at his page but i will right now.
Gerkinstock umm Almost 25% of the US population is NON religious. Your right those who come out as ATHEIST is a smaller number but Not believing in something no matter what you call it is the same thing.
I don't think being non-religious is the same thing as being atheist or agnostic. One can believe in God and be non-religious, just as one can have a political ideology but be affiliated with no political party.
You are absolutley right. What I ment by that is that Most people Who dont believe in god dont label themselves as ATHEIST. THe word Atheist for a long time had a negative pun towards it. PLus Their is no such thing as middle ground agnostics, You are either an atheist or theist.
I disagree about agnostics. I think there are people who have no firm opinions as to God's existence, just like there are people who don't have firm opinions on issues like abortion or the death penalty. And some people probably don't really care and haven't given it much thought, even if their numbers are small. It's not as if there is evidence leading in one direction or another. God, as envisioned by most, is outside the realm of science; thus, no one's opinion on the matter counts for
I wanted to shout at my monitor when I heard Mike Huckabee speak. Oh my FSM, what an idiot. McCain and Ron Paul are idiots too, but to a lesser extent. If there is any good in the world these three won't go anywhere near the White House.
Hmm. From this speech, Obama sounds like an agnostic or a closet atheist. Not that I blame him since if he'd declare himself to be atheist, he wouldn't have a chance in hell to be elected. Either way he sounds like a logical guy. Hope he wins in november.
my god, your scared im not an atheist i believe wierd things that be explaind by a presence of energy or somesort of light or power, that is "god" but i think the religions are a brain washing mechanism used in order to control us easier
He wants to use church organizations to do things in washington. Hence it would be cheaper than to set up your own building. Infact Im a strong atheist and I can agree with his logic their. Plus if anything its a christian ploy to get people like you to think that.
Obama is an excellent public speaker, and his views exactly match mine.
Clinton, apparently, is a hypocrit on the issue of religion in society.
To McCain: The U.S.A. was not founded on Christian ideals! "In God was Trust" was implemented WAY after the founding of the nation. You exclude MOST people in the U.S.A.
Obama is the next president of the United States of America.
I'm not so sure he echoes my ideals. I think I'm still "settling for another evil". I'd really love to see REAL change but I think he's a Libertarian in name only... He's avoided the true issues that RP speaks of like Federal and State citizenship, etc. Sovereignty, instead of slavery, etc. Am I talking at a different level? I don't mean to be. I'm just not sure about this unconstitutional election process and all while I'm regaining my sovereignty.
Well, there are somethings that I would question. I would agree that the election process has become rather unfair and unconstitutional, but I have reviewed Bob Barr's record and it is the closest to Ron Paul's. Plus, I can't vote for McCain, Barrack, or Hillary.
I'm with you on not voting for any of those a-holes (sorry, just how I feel). Barr still seems to be an infiltrator and more of the same. He avoided all the issues and still got the Lib nod. To me, that says that the Lib's are sold out... Damn! Just when I discovered I was truly a libertarian in my heart and soul and mind... Are we to forever be democratic slaves? A democracy is slavery in case you were not aware. I mean no offense. You probably already know that. What to do, what to do???
I would say who cares what party a candidate is part of if they are truly intending to better ALL of america, not cater to certain religious groups, or special interest groups. Vote OBAMA, he will let you practice your own faith, free of judgement. Nobody can force you to abandone your faith, as it is your guide to right and wrong OBAMA 08

John McCain for President of the United States!!! He is absolutely right about everything that he said. John evidently knows how to deal with terrorists. The islamic hold on Iran is hateful to the beautiful Persian people who have suffered for so long. They need help. We also need a president who knows how to deal with islam right here in the USA. Do U want the streets of the USA to look like Great Britain, because that's where we are headed. Wake up America!!!
Wow, such hate for Muslims. Christian history is not exactly free of terrorism and atrocity, you know. If John McCain is elected, America will continue to lose it's freedoms and sink into the cesspool of pointless, expensive wars.

John McCain will protect this country from its enemies, and we have many. I don't hate muslims at all, but we have a problem brewing here, and we need to address it. I take it you don't care if we have muslims saying Death to America in our streets? Christian history is awful. No argument. I am leary of muslims because they hate us, and feel we need to be converted. Have you ever heard of Hudna? Look it up. Hillary? Barack? I don't think either could handle it. I do like both of them though.

Oh wow (taylorx04)... No, McCain is the only candidate who wants to keep our freedoms. He beats the dems on any issue. The Dems plan a near 1 trillion dollar tax hike in the next few years... That's going to hurt MANY Americans. Al-Qaida is fucked if McCain becomes President. And Bin Laden will see the Gates of Hell soon. Obama would wrecklessly pull our troops out, let Al-Qaida/Taliban re-group, and they would stage an attack on our allies or America, and we would be sorry. Be smart. McCain '08
Thats exactly what he's counting on you to believe. But clearly your mind is so polluted by what the media tells you about Al-Queda and Bin Laden that you won't respond to reason anyway. Sacrificing our freedoms in the name of stopping terrorism is not even close to keeping our freedoms. You must be delusional.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
See, you can't even spell Al-Qaida correctly. Oh and I'm not supposed to believe the 1 trillion dollar tax hike? No boy, that's the Dems plans and that you cannot deny. It's the LIBERAL media that sabotages young people's brains these days. Because more and more people are stuck to the t.v.'s, they get the wrong messages. I can see you will continue to be uneducated and not understand politics very well.
It's spelled many different ways, dumbass. Shut the fuck up with your retarded elitist propaganda. You're 18, kid, much younger than I. You assume that because I'm against McCain that I must be a Democrat, so there's your uneducated and politically ignorant ass sticking out. You neo-cons think you've got it all figured out, and you're content to live in your own little world where America is the greatest and people like McCain are heroes. Tax hike or no civil liberties - I'll take the tax hike.
Oh you know I'm 18? What do you search my profile? It doesn't matter what my age is. I started following politics since I was 9 years old with Clinton and through the Bush years. But I hear dumbass liberals speak out against McCain as well as Ron Paultards. Paul is more like a liberal anyway. You're just ignorant and can't see the potential harms if we pull the troops out. Such as Iran taking over, taking their oil, and our prices will spike tremendously... You idiots can't accept that reality
Oh, I see that you are 18 now, and have such strong views on things like the war in Iraq. Tell me, will we have you on the front lines in Iraq after you sign up? You are going to sign up and fight for the cause that you believe in right? And not let someone elses kids do it? Just asking.
Yea, I will be turning 19. I am going through ROTC for the Air Force. In 2011, I'm supposed to commission and go through training for a few months. Then I'll be stationed in the U.S. and if need be, sent overseas somewhere. And what do you mean not let someone else's kids do it? I'm willing to fight to protect our freedoms and I have a moral obligation as well. The spread of democracy can surely be achieved, because that is the best form of government. And I'd like to see others serve too.
I don't remember what I posted on this comment box the last time I was on here, which was at least over a month ago, but I think it's important for young people to seek a religion. It gives them a spiritual guide through life and thoughts about eternal life, heaven...
Who cares if they regroup, they dont invade en masse. They infiltrate one at a time, Obama will secure the borders, McCain wants to send our military, our defense, away from us, making us less safe. Plus, strong arming muslim countries will inspire great increases in terrorism and terrorist devotion. The more the radicals view the U.S. as a threat, the more terrorist acts we will see. A true christian turns the other cheek right? What would Jesus Do, war? I think not
Finally, someone else speaking sense. I was wondering where this sudden influx of idiots had come from and where the intelligent commenters had gone, lol.
John McCain is hand in glove with "Pastor" John Hagee, who wants the US to bomb Iran immediately with nuclear weapons. Hagee means to foment WWIII, bringing about Armageddon and ushering in the "return" of Jesus Christ. He wants to bring it on, and he expects John McCain to help him do it. So, elect McCain and bring the end of the world. Only it won't be the end you expect. McCain has accepted Hagee's endorsement without repudiating these ideas. He believes in war. Do you?
baraks interpretation of the bible is quite frankly, wrong. Some of the new testament refutes the old, such as the stoning example brought up. John 8: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"

I in know way think all American presidents should be Christian. I was just trying to explain why I think McCain's view can be explained, not that he was right. He is equating moral decency with Christianity. Which can be done but is not legit.
Noellenc 3 years ago
PS - I am not condoning Christianity one way or the other or saying it is really a religion that teaches tolerance and decency, because though it LOOKS TO I think it often does the opposite.
Noellenc 3 years ago
2. so America's gov't is not Christian, but a lot of Christian ideals are behind the founders intentions because, especially through recent history the majority of Americans are Christian as the majority of Indians are hindi etc.
3. I think I've proven that you misconstrued my agenda and I was not refuting this. I can just understand why it's not so VILE that McCain feels that Christianity (its ideals, not practice) does have some relevance to our gov't.
Noellenc 3 years ago
TaylorX04 3 years ago 2
Good job Taylor.
billwalkerable 2 years ago
Taylor, it will not let me reply to you but 1) I do not mean Christian doctrine, I meant the moral attitude of Christianity which is really just common decency toward others, and even other religions carry this, but being that they were Christians these ideas were in their heads. It is ignorant to say they were not. And it does not mean things should be done in a Christian way, I just mean I see how what he's saying can be seen as true.
2. I didnt say there other religious GOVS but majorities..
Noellenc 3 years ago
Common decency toward others is not exclusive to Christianity or to religion, as you pointed out, but although some of the founders were certainly Christians, many of them also were not. Jefferson, Paine, Franklin, and several others were very open about being Deists.

Religious faggots cannot admit there is an axiomatic state of reproductive mammalian biology scientifically conistent with evolutionary theory.
The monogamous marriage is a religious rite and it comes directly from religion.
I don't like your faggot churches.
Since when should the religious standard of monogamous marriage be applied to secular law???
Why not polygyny or polyandry???
SirWinstonChurchill 3 years ago
I agree with practically all you've said here, but who are you directing this comment to?
TaylorX04 3 years ago
All...
SirWinstonChurchill 3 years ago
I think as far as religious tendencies go, that McCain is one of the most moderate republicans out there. I am an agnostic and I would also agree that America was founded under Christian principles, there is no doubt about it. I wouldn't go so far as to say the president has to be a Christian, but there are so many nations with a majority religion and nobody gets as frustrated about it as we do in America. YES we have alot of diversity, but people will always be staunch about their religion.
Noellenc 3 years ago
Wow, these are some pretty ignorant statements.
1. Provide examples of "Christian principles" our country was founded on.
2. Provide examples of nations that seem perfectly content with a religious government.
3. Provide an explanation for the Treaty of Tripoli stating that "America is not, in any sense, a Christian nation".
It's one thing to make the absurd claims you've just made, but care to even remotely back them up?

Why are everyone in america so obsessed with "the founding fathers".. why does the founding fathers opinion even matter ?
In sweden we never speak of our "founding fathers"... we have moved on.. and one other thing we have moved on from.. we have moved on from religion. sweden are 80+% atheists.. america are 80+%religious..not the exact numbers ofc.. because its hard for me to believe that 80 % of america are believing morons..its just not possible.. i think that there are more athe tha it sems
436214 3 years ago
I don't think it's even close to 80% of our country that believe in god. It's more than half, yes, but there are also a lot of people who feel uncomfortable with calling themselves atheists, because of retarded social stigmatisms.
About the founders, I think people in America reference them a lot, because our Constitution is not always clear in some cases. So it is helpful to take the founders' own words and times into account, when interpretting the law.
TaylorX04 3 years ago
yea.. i mean..as Richard dawkins said: its beyond belief that all americans are believers,

Oh no...
assblaster17 3 years ago
"in god we trust" wasn't from the founding fathers. It was added to our currency in the 50's (during the "commie scare"), which previously said "e pluribus unum".
Think about it. America was founded by people trying to escape from England's over integration of the church in government.
darkwolf228 3 years ago 2
Minor correction to darkwolf228's point: "in god we trust" was actually first added to our currency at the end of the civil war, due to increased religious sentiment. However, it was only adopted as our national motto in the '50s, during the "commie scare."
Likewise, "under god" was added to the pledge of allegiance (which itself had its origins in the civil war) during the 50's red scare.
In any case, it had nothing to do with the principles upon which our country was founded.
p0lyph0ny 3 years ago
So, this is The proof that McCain doesn't know JACK about politics and American history.
- He saiz here that the founders pushed the "Christian Nation" idea many times by making reality of things like "In God we trust". Was that not added After the declaration?
And it sounds like he was about to mention the "One nation under God" thing as well, but since he was around and remembers the added "under God" (1954) I guess he stopped himself.
What a fucking moron. John, how's your ABC's? 123's?

Well, wishful thinking if you feel atheists have ever even made a dent in any Presidential election. I bet there are more gays than atheists, (just a reminder to where you stand.)
pic103 3 years ago
Unlike religious zealots, I don't feel like I need a strictly atheist president to be happy and free. Just someone who isn't an idiot and who recognizes freedom of religion means freedom FROM religion too. It's no secret that some people would sooner elect a gay president than an atheist one, but does that bother me? Not in the slightest. The president is hardly a grand position of power anyway.
TaylorX04 3 years ago
UNless about 20% of the us population is gay then I dont think your logic is justified. Using the definition of "god" and atheist. Or are you talking about those who come out and just use the label atheist. Or those who use other labels, jainist, agnostic, bright, and secular humanist.
dragoonthief 3 years ago
Dice and slice it however you want to put it.... You're still a very tiny percent. And you can save your time trying to dig up some statistics to prove me otherwise...
pic103 3 years ago
Lets look at it this way. 50% of religious people go democrat 50 % or so go Republican.
Majority of all Non religious people call them what you want go Democrat. (their are some non religious Republicans out their but its a small number) This election is going to be very interesting. Plus MCcain doesnt have the right winged CHristian vote completly. So it is going to be very interesting.
dragoonthief 3 years ago
I think it gets a little "trickier" than that.. Without much thought, I think a large number of Baptists vote Republican - the whole South.. A lot of Catholics vote democrat - North East.. And then a mixture for the rest, except for California, I don't think that they even have any churches out there, do they?
pic103 3 years ago
But as far as a religious point of view, it may be about how the Catholics and Jews vote too.. And by the way, some atheists, might vote republican? I don't know...
pic103 3 years ago
Some atheists will vote republican. But thats only a handfull. A couple thousand in all the united states. Bush had a huge religious vote in 00 and 04 which MCcain doesnt have now. Jews make up less than like .002 of the population. Muslims same thing.
dragoonthief 3 years ago
I'm one of the few (atheist)that today would vote for McCain over Obama. Personally I love Obama's social views including his quotes on the Bible. However I do see McCain as a more Moderate (almost liberal) Republican. Which is great for me because it's so hard to vote for Democrats with the proposed tax increases in todays economy. And in the end the economy is kind of like winning in sports. As long as you're winning (ie stable/booming economy), then everything else falls in to place.
DirkXXVI 3 years ago
Do you know what the Republicans want to do with your rights. Do you know what they have said and still say about Atheists. McCain is an old man who is going senile fast. I think you have valid points, however I feel you are betraying yourself and giving atheists a bad name. IF you are that easy to crumble to those who hate you, Id prefer if you called yourself a christian and just get it over with.
dragoonthief 3 years ago
I know Republicans want to do a lot of things socially. Doesn't mean it's going to happen. I mean 5 terms of Republican presidents since 1984 and a new conservative supreme court justice and yet Roe vs Wade still hasn't been overturned. Gay marriage will come, all of the other social stuff atheist are fighting for will come. Ironcially in some ways extreme evangelicals help the cause in part b/c when people see others with the same beliefs acting like idiots they question their own beliefs.
DirkXXVI 3 years ago
In the end maybe I am going against the grain with most of atheism, but part of the reason I became an atheist was to think for myself not to find a new group of people to tell me what to do. I wish we had a better forum to debate this as the character count keeps dwindling down but I'll get back to my main point. Anyway my reasons are to numerous to list in these post but from what I've seen so far. IMO McCain's admin will be better for this country then Obama (granted no Romney VP for McCain)
DirkXXVI 3 years ago
Your reasons are because of taxes and a form of faith? DO you understand what the president gets to do? He gets to appoint a Justice. Do you know what justices do? They interpret law. And you fool want to destroy almost 30 or so years of secular law brought forth by fighting atheists, while you think you relized something. You sir are an idiot and know nothing about the old man McCain. And you show republicans that atheists dont matter because they will vote for those who hate them.
dragoonthief 3 years ago
Are you kidding me? You're very similar to the so called Christians you criticize. Instead of debating the points you choose to insult me personally and mock me for not being a true atheist. Which if there is such a thing, then I want no part of it as it looks like a whole new form of dogma and anyone who doesn't agree is an "idiot." Sound familiar? Bush the most "evangelical" president ever wasn't able to overturn abortion nor was he able to push ID and school prayer.
DirkXXVI 3 years ago
Anyway as far as reasons are concerned I believe for starters that economics 101 says you don't raise taxes in a bear market. On top of that states have much more power when it comes to the social issues, as certain states have pro-life and pro-choice laws ready in the (unlikely) case of Roe vs Wade being overturned. Yes the supreme court sets the tempo but in cases like this the states have the final say as to what the actual laws will be.
DirkXXVI 3 years ago
rememeber last time we let the states decide on a Big Issue....We had a civil War....
fatty214 3 years ago
I guess you make over 250k a year and are afraid of the taxe increase? I personally am looking forward to Obama's taxe relief for lower to middle class people, including myself. Obama WILL raise the rich man's taxes, and wealthy people will have to pay more for our country and they will uphold its greatness. McCain will decrease taxes for rich people, in his words "important american families". So I guess you are one of 'those' important people then. Your choice to care about others.
swwigy 3 years ago
It's more then the tax increase. First the national health care system is hopefully a bluff. If you read the horror stories from Canada, the UK, and France you will see that the US is pretty well off. Unless you're willing to wait 19.5 weeks to see a specialist.Canada's Politicans were praising their NHCare system one minute and then coming to America for care the next. It doesn't work. Being someone who had their skull eroded I would have to say that timely health care was a truly fortunate
DirkXXVI 3 years ago
aspect of this countries infurstructure. Good idea!
DirkXXVI 3 years ago
The tax increase is targeting rich people who should help support their country, the other 90% of the population will get a decrease.
As for health care, I support it. I rather see people wait in line for a year to get help, than never get help at all or just get pushed into debt because of bad luck. We are a civilized country, prime of the world. Why don't we start acting like benevolent animals and take care of eachother when we need to? If we just focused money into positive channels...
swwigy 3 years ago
On top of the fact that you won't get quality care, you'll also have to make up for the drop in quality among doctors since the incentives to become doctors will be less attractive due to lower pay combined with the huge amount of cost to complete medical school. Also remember that doctors research Cancer and AID's if you lower the quality there then the research in those fields will suffer. Find a middle ground for health care, don't try to find a cure all that hasn't worked.

And some people probably don't really care and haven't given it much thought, even if their numbers are small. It's not as if there is evidence leading in one direction or another. I'm willing to fight to protect our freedoms and I have a moral obligation as well. The spread of democracy can surely be achieved, because that is the best form of government. And I'd like to see others serve too.

Good for you. I am glad that you live your convictions. SO many people do not.

I think not

Oh hell no, I had no idea Huckabee sucked that much.
Huckabee is one of those, 'If your not with me, your against me' people.

Do you?

Thanks for this, I really had no idea where the candidates stood, and as an atheist it's a very important issue for me!
