@LawnCareMidwest I'm glad u like my feedback! you should throw in some random clips or sounds or something. Keep ppl on their toes lol. You remind me of a young Tim and Eric....
very informative!!! i have a question to you, Lawcare expert :) if i may? I have planted carabao grass in our garden. During the rainy season, they grow and spread (but not very fast). Anyway, how do I speed up their spreading. By now, there are just about two square meters which are pure soil, and I planted carabao grass there, and it's just kinda slow. I don't want any brown areas, I want them all covered with carabao grass. What should I do? Thanks!
@LawnCareMidwest This would be much better if you'd skiP the attempts at being funny ... AND GET TO THE POINT!! (IT'S VERY ANNOYING) People came here for info! not Stand-up.
@Weatherman97 some birds will eat some of the seed, but not enough to make a negative impact. straw doesn't protect seeds anyway, but it does bring in weed seeds and foreign grass seeds that you don't want in the lawn
Since Indianapolis, Indiana is going through a heat wave now, I am guessing, I can't do anything about getting my lawn from brown to green? Do I just keep watering till September rolls around to plant new seeds then? Or can I maybe "patch up" certain places for those bare spot areas with new seeds? If so, what type of product should I buy? I know that is more than 3 questions....if you saw my lawn...you'd say "yikes"!
@annasou1 if your lawn is in summer dormancy, it is ok to let it stay that way until fall. You should wait until fall (september) to seed, and a good mix of bluegrass and perennial rye for full sun is a smart choice.
Hey, Allyn. I got a question. Is it really important to mix in steer compost when tilling the soil? And also, the best time to plant Blue grass is Fall, right? I planted blue grass in mid-spring, but it didn't grow. thanks.
@micyficy I don't think compost is super important in the mix. You really just need the three elements I talk about in the video - heat, water and seed-on-soil. Fall is the best time, but you can grow seed all year long if you water enough.
@LawnCareMidwest Ok, thanks. You still need to till the soil right? My yard is only 750 square ft, and it is sandy soil. Did you till your yard? Also, how long do I keep dogs of it? thanks.
@LawnCareMidwest Yea, But my big question is, you still need to till the soil, right? You can't just lay seed on rock hard sandy soil?......... I'm tilling my soil with a pick axe. I can't rent a rototiller because I'm 16. Its only a 745 square ft lawn. You say its not necessary to add compost, right? Can you please tell me how you planted yours from scratch? I would appreaciate it. Thanks, sir.
I am using nearly nothing but Kentucky Blue Grass and no blends. I have been told it is the best choice for sensitive lawns due to its ability to withstand damage. I have never gotten up close and personal with grass before. So I have no idea what it looks like from the root. There is either grass or a weed growing that grows out of the ground in a 5 pointed "star" shape, with a red base turning bold green at the tips of the flat looking leaf. What is it? How do I destroy it?
@MrHardset I never recommend planting only one type of grass like you are doing. this creates what is called a "mono-culture" and if you get hit with a disease problem it can damage the entire lawn. whereas if you have a mix, then only one type will be stressed while another takes over and keeps growing.
as far as the weed, I'd need a pic to ID it for you. Contact me thru my site Lawn Care Midwest dot com
Ok I have 2 questions for you..... 1. I too am from Indiana. I just built a new house and my yard is nothing but that good old Indiana Clay. It doesn't break up in a tiller very easily, and can't hold water for more than 2 hours. My yard is 7,000 Sq Ft. I have been laying seed on the surface with Scotts Turf Builder. It's growing, but I'm afraid of fall/winter death.. What should I do?
@MrHardset I usually don't recommend growing grass seed in the mid summer. the heat wave we had last week will damage the seedlings more than winter. But as a rule of thumb, if the grass has been established from seed for at least 5 weeks, it will overwinter with no issue. I also seeded my lawn by hand on top of the gray clay. The trick is to add more seed each week and keep watering. Mine took 4 months to completely establish as I laid fresh seed every single week and watered.
I live in Canada and I mow my lawn as high as possible to prepare my lawn to be more drought resistant (by retaining moisture in the soil) during the months of June, July & August ...which is always hot & dry. Every week that I mow, the grass is producing seed and I mow the seeds back into the soil to produce a healthier / thicker turf. I over-seed with nature's help (weekly) by mowing at the proper time & mower height and I don't spend a dime on grass seed. How simple is that?
@019ilduce I actually don't recommend using hay or straw to cover because that brings in foreign weed seeds that will germinate. if you want to use a covering, peat moss is a good alternative, keep it moist and it won't blow away.
This was informative, thanks! I live in Colorado and had my lawn aerated, fertilized, and the thin areas seeded a month ago, and even with ample watering, the results have been minimal. I imagine that since it is Mid-May and our night temps are still in the 30s, that is to be expected :o(
@cherylwoodrn yes, the low night temps are not helping. however, aerating and seeding works but it is not a cure-all unless you follow some additional steps.
@hamilton0526 you can grow grass in areas that are more desert-like, but you need a variety that can withstand the conditions and you need an irrigation system as well.
dude ... youre smart on the grass info ... just keep it to that ... the jokes are kinda lame .. no offense... some people are naturally funny some arent ...
So the other day I planted seed next to my porch since theres no grass. It only gets 36 minutes of sun in the morning. Now I know grass needs atleast 4 hours of sun, but I really needed grass in there because it gets muddy. It was growing and now its not growing anymore. I planted it in Novemeber. Its been like 3 months and its still the same size 1 inch, but infested with all kind of weeds. Its kentucky blue grass. I heard fescue is more shade tolerant. Any advice? good video. Very concise.
Thanks man, for the tips, your passion for what your doing shines through.
