Feel I shoud say a few things here. 1) It's a BUELL engine. It was designed by buell who then took their design to rotax. 2) It's because of harley that buell hung in there for as long as they did. The economy and because people refuse to buy AMERICAN is what killed buell. 3) Lastly (though I could go on), the XBs, "S" models and even the Battle Twins were killer bikes. HD torque, good rpm wrapped in a nice tight nimble pakage. Minimal riding and the bike become an extension of your own body.
@macdaddy1600 You can't compare V-twins to inline fours; it's apples & oranges. Buells have always out-cornered jap bikes. Racing is supposed to be about who the more skilled *rider* is, not what bike is faster. Different bikes are different, so of course they're not going to perform the same. If you want high top end, you get an inline four. If you want low-end torque, you get a V-twin. If you want to know who the better racer is, you put two different riders on a couple of identical bikes.
they still have harley engines just not on all models. i know for most harley guys its difficult to fathom that a company can use more then one type of engine.
@germankid93 I doubt Buell ever asked HD to build an OHC motor at all. He used to be an HD engineer; I'm sure he was well aware that HD was never going to allocate resources to designing and/or building a different kind of motor.
@aivilik actually Harley went straight to Buell and told them they needed a new water-cooled engine to stay competitive in the market. This is where the V-rod engine first came about because it was originally supposed to be slotted into a tuber frame, but once Willie G. found out about the project he decided it would be badass to have that engine in a cruiser and that kind of took the project to a new area and made it impractical to be used in a sport bike
@macdaddy1600 Because it was American made. The ENGINE (Rotax) was not made in America, but the rest of the bike, to the best of my knowledge, was made in America, and whether or not even THAT is true; Buell was an American company, and THAT makes it an American bike.
True. The Harley sound on a sport-bike is pretty unique! The guy around the corner from my house has LOUD bikes. Whenever I'm out in my garage, like right now, I don't really ever turn to look who is going by, but the one day, I heard a Harley, looked down my driveway, but saw a sport-bike! Immediately I said to myself "Buell". LoL!
Some people from my sport-bike club took a test ride of the 1125R and convinced me to go do it. I'll be going next week to try one out, then I'm buying an R1! :-P
The 1125 never HAD an HD motor. The bikes that started out with the HD motor/HD 'style' motor ALWAYS had the same motor.

It's still American. Aprilia is Aprilia. Buell is Buell. How do you get Aprilia from Buell?

id have to admit- it is kinda hard to imagine a sport bike with an HD motor
OnlyPerfect1 2 years ago
Test ride one and you won't have to imagine it anymore. Buells have so much low end power you'll probably crap yourself.

The only reason I would of bought one is for the Harley engine, now I'd just buy a Gixxer and be done with it.

Sounds like a frickin' R/C airplane - go figure, it's a Rotax.
That bike blows, you know what it needs? A 1200+ cc Harley motor!

There is only so much you can do with the Eisenhower era harley v-twin.
Keep the harley motors for tour bikes and cruisers.
