Wonderful! The beauty of this role is that even though it is, today, more often sung by mezzosopranos, the score states soprano dramatique, so it gives me an alibi to sing this. I simply love Cassandre.
It is a great shame that Shirley Verrett was not recording in Les Troyens in its entirety--shame on Colin Davis for the ugly-sounding Berit Lindholm in this role. I cannot understand why in all the versions of Les Troyens recorded in studios, that Cassandre and Didon are repeatedly sung by lesser lights. My ideal cast: Marilyn Horne as Cassandre and Shirley Verrett as Didon! Regine Crespin as both is another idea casting.
@joanabanyeres Oui, d' accord. Régine était suprême. Mais ne vous trompez pas, Mme Verret était elle-aussi inoubliable en Cassandre et Didon. Et belle comme tout!
@franceseattle I agree. The recording companies pretty much ignored Verrett in most of her big roles when she was in her prime. The Troyens recording was most likely politics at Philipps Records, because there really were other and better Didon's and Cassandre's: Horne, Ludwig, Bumbry, Verrett. As for Crespin, that's a tragedy. The big Troyens "vogue" came ten years too late for her. I heard her in 1972 in Boston - magnificent artist, but the voice just couldn't do it anymore.
Rafael Kubelik qui faisait aussi ses débuts au Met.

Régine was French...And what can you expect of Youtube sound? The aura of Verrett is out of these considerations.
