The lyrics are West Indian response to 1960 independence for Congo - West Indians regarded the Congolese as relatively unsophisticated and this was a kind of protest song against British rule - if the Congolese can be independent, what about West Indians?
xev1435 ~ sorry you're way off base with this explanation. What you write about white visitors and Tobagonians might be so, but as for Sparrow's song embodying this ~ pure conjecture. The lyrics mean exactly what they say: two white women visiting AFRICA, etc. Though some would like to think of Caribbean islands as being Africa (i.e., where savages live, e.g.), I can assure you that Trinidad and Tobago in no way or form can be considered as being Africa. Oh, btw, I'm born and bred Trini
Congo man was usually a black man, native to usually Tobago, who would be the sudden lover of white women vacationing to the island, looking for quick sexual encounters. Usually these women were European, especially German. Eventually, a number of them settled on the island, had kids and started families this was, away from europe. There was a time germans were also buying up land on the island. These men were termed "congo man." Listen to the lyrics for the sexual connotation.
One of Sparow's best!! Saw him in Anguilla in 07; he was still fantastic and will always be the KING! My St. Kitts-born Mother explained the double entendre thing when she thought I was old enough. : D Love you, Mommy!
Oh my Goodness!!!!!!! Yes!!!!! I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!. Though the storyline of the song is very gruesome, it is lighten by inducing comedy. LOL!! This is by far one of the best Calypso songs EVER!!!. Its timeless.
@Boredhaswon : Dat is called double entendre or double-speak, u cannot translate literally because what is being said might not be what is meant although it could be, hence di term double speak. It is intentionally confusing!
My dad used to sing this around the house, me and my bro used to be like 'wtf' chaa Candy for letting my finally listen to this song! (My dad lost the record haha) Hehe silly song
I was born here. My Mother is from Trinidad and my Father was born here but grew up in Guyana. When relatives came form the Caribbean we listened to Calypso. I love this song.
I first heard this song in Jamaica in 1989. I still love it all these years later. Thanks for posting it because I lost my CD and am so glad to have it back.
Just what Sparrow dramatic words are! Dat is his song. Well do not analyze dem words. Dat IS Dat! says de Poet. 012012
