The Sam Ash here in Indy actually had the Ibanez Destroyer that Phil used on the Photograph music video. It was badass. I didn't have the cash at the time to buy it, and when I did a week later, the damn thing was gone. I was bummed out. I ask for the name of the buyer to see if he would be willing to sell it to me, but they wouldn't give me his name.
@keaulana1 They sound absolutely AWESOME. A friend of mine, who is a doctor, has 3 of them. I got to try them all out and I was just in love with their sound and playability!!!!
That neck is a brick! There's like no heel on there. YIKES!! Plus 13-54 with high action = killer tone. Not my liking but it does make for a monster tone.
Always respected Phil as a guitarist. Underrated and super cool dude. Love the vid.
I couldn't attend the show but I'm close enough to the fairgrounds where I could hear them play while I was outside for some late-night grilling on deck. The crowd sounded INSANE.
I've watched a couple of these rig rundowns and Phil is the ONLY one where he actually shows her his rig. All of the other ones are their guitar techs that show them their rig.
Met Phil, he is just a fantastic person, NAM show one year and I quite literally bumped into him at the Jackson booth. I happened to be holding a PC1. He sat down and went over the guitar with me, just a great guy and a great player. Love seeing him continuing to be successful
Yngwie uses 8s on top and 46s or 48s on the bottom, he says he only notices a tone difference on the bottom strings. 10s seem to be the most commonly used string size.
Yngwie uses 8s on top and 46s or 48s he says he only notices a tone difference on the bottom strings. 10s seem to be the most commonly used string size.
Question.... i own Pc1 i bought before many years.. are these guitars from the shop same as Phills? do they have the same neck or phills has phater neck on his Pc1??
His guitars with his specs are really not what you get when you pay out the ying yang for his artist model guitars. Look at the video. His guitars have titanium tremelos and dunlop straplocks. If you pay for that, you should get that.
What a pleasant speaking voice - he could be a radio personality. Also seems like such a nice guy. So glad they weren't involved in that horrible stage collapse.
I remember just a few short yrs ago , Premiere Guitar was a "nobody" magazine, sent for free to anyone who had a Guitar Center,Mars or any other music store acct. , and now they rank up there with Guitar Player in substance and style. Good job!
guitar rig 4 nice i like to use it too even though i got valve amps, pedals and mics and everything, but its just so easy with guitar rig 4 just record and you can tune your sound even after you have recorded.
Rebecca, Do you play guitar? I was wondering because you ask all of the right "guitar" questions. You have a great job being able to interview people like Phil Collen. PG Rocks!
The Ibanez Destoyer he used on the Pyromania album and on the video of Photograph was on sale at the Sam Ash in Indy. I was deciding whether or not to buy it and went back two weeks later, cash in hand, anf the damn thing sold the day before! Damit, I was bummed out. Snooze and lose, I guess is the lesson learned.
$1200. That's all! I had just bought a new amp the day before and didn't have enough cash to get it when I first saw it. I should have taken the amp back, got my money back, and got the Destroyer.
Agreed, they are pretty big. THey havent learned from SRV; even tuning down his hands were ruined by the time he died. At the time of his death Stevie was down to 10 and 11 sets, he also had problems with his hands locking up.
I think there is a law of diminishing returns. Billy Gibbons gets a much fatter tone than Phil Collen and uses 7 and 8 gauge strings.
Tone /= string gauge, rather it is a combination of everything in your rig.
@ThieleM wow... I always thought his strings looked thick, but damn that is reaaally thick... I always wondered why i never got a lot of sustain out of my high e... that explains.. xD thanks! learned something new today!!
Transistor stuff like JMP 1 & digital stuff like Guitar Rig U can certainly tell from good tube stuff. Transistors have a thinner, less dynamic thing, always with a 'radio hash' thing mixed in. Digital is coarse & flat, oddly lacking in detail. There is bad tube stuff, but good tube stuff sounds much better. Also U can't do 'subtle breakup' things with trans or digital - sounds krap that way. & good tube stuff is way quieter than either (no need 2 ride volume knobs 2 reduce noise).
@Deathrape2001 You say all that but I use a Tech21 trademark amp. The amount of people who think it's some sort of hot rod Fender valve amp and can't cope with it being solid state because it has the break up etc... I play Jazz so it is a different kettle of fish.
Also Phil spends a lot of time back in the UK so knows that valves are going to be restricted and phased out like the incandescent light bulb.
@Djarra What I say has nothing 2 do with the fact transistors have a flat, lifeless sound compared 2 tubes, & radio hash noise thrown in, or that digital has a grainy, coarse sound oddly lacking in detail. T here is lots of horrible tube gear of course - like needles & pins or shrill nails-on-blackboard nonsense, but good tube gear wipes the floor with N E thing else 4 distortion.Of course, U already know this, but U R just trolling me because U think it magically makes your non-tube krap better
@Djarra You are misinformed my friend. Vacuum tube sales have increased 10% in the last 14 years. The companies that make them are even bringing back phased-out models due to demand. Tubes always have and always will be the only choice in high-end audio and guitar amplifiers.
Alexander Dumble said it best: "....fragile harmonics thrive in a free-flowing vacuum, whereas they are squashed in a solid state crystal lattice." If you've ever compared the two, you can also "feel" the difference.
@SixStringHarmonies The European Union are to phase out valves and this will hit sales. Valve amps waste a heck of a lot of energy and this is why they are due to be targeted. At the moment it's a feast before the famine.
@BobSince1981 .013 because they're way downtuning _everything_. Some time compare the keys of their live concerts to the recordings. Joe E. doesn't sound like a teeny-bopper any more.
