I find Michio Kauku's ideas on extraterrestrial types pretty interesting. My problem with a blanket acceptance of what he says is that he makes almost the whole of his argument contingent on advances in technology. The future of human culture and evolution will depend much more on the evolution of our consciousness toward depth and non-competitive solutions. If we can't leave the idea that everything in life depends on competition rather than cooperation, we are a suicidal species. End game.
Basically if we look at encouters on earth between "advanced" groups and less "advanced" groups the outlook for the latter is bleak indeed. Spains conquest of the Inca's, the genocide of the american Indians, the slave trade in general, the crusades. We are systematically destroying the rain forests with no regard for the tribes that live in them. Why suppose an advanced space travelling race would be any more benevolent towards us when we kill our own?
Your points seem valid. I would only say that in evolutionary past aggression, destruction and conquest have worked for the dominant culture within our species, but as you point out, many planetary habitats are facing environmental collapse. Again, I think that at some point in any planetary evolution, the strategy of unbridled aggression might cease to have adaptive value. It might be true for any other inhabited planet as well. At that point, maybe species must either cooperate or die.
It would be nice to think a seriously advanced civilisation might come to earth and be benevolent towards us. Unfortunately a quick look at our track record would reveal us as aggressive, self destructive and untrustworthy. I feel we may be looked upon as the pests we are. We are well on our way to wiping out all life on earth. For the planets sake an advanced race may well decide to call in their local exterminator!
The very fact that we are here should tell us that life can exist elsewhere in the universe and almost certainly does. People just do not seem to grasp the enormity of the distances involved.
I understand, or try to understand, the distances. It is difficult for a mind accustomed to earth distances to grasp stellar distances. Here's a thought provoking and funny video about the Hubble deep field image from 2003 (for those that haven't already seen it), revealing a huge number of galaxies in what we see as only a tiny black spot above: watch?v=mcBV-cXVWFw&fmt=18
While I don't believe any of the popular stories about aliens, I would truly be surprised if we were alone.
I've heard this before. I think it is a nervous thing I do when I'm in front of the camera. By nature I'm extremely shy, and I smile even about serious thing because of nerves, but I know it is irritating. I've tried. It is not a habit I'm going to overcome. Maybe the only answer it to not show my face on camera.
Weyoun22, your not from the South US are you? 2bsirius is from Texas and all Texas ladies are taught to put a smiling demeanour and too avoid looking dour. I guess you could say it is a cultural thing, I'm from Georgia and all the Southern ladies even when their mad keep their smiling composure.
Ha, She might be smoking some of that too. Anyways she is a poduct of the great State of Texas and that can be enough to put a smile on me. Nice Lady.
I think the ridiculous Catholic Church is laying claim on whatever scientists turn up in the future. Whatever it is, God is cooler than it and created it and owns it.
Also, Pope John Paul II said something to the effect that Galileo was right, but nothing close to an apology or admission of wrong doing on the church's part.
As in the flim Contact if Extraterrestrials were to appear and hold out an Olive branch, who could we send to meet them who would represent us all. This would be our biggest problem.
Like Douglas Adams said space is big, really big. With so many species apeearing on one small blue planet alone I would be surprised if the conditions for life not cropping up in any of the other star systems out there. It would seem a mathematical improbability. Modern science says the Universe is finite, and we can measure it's expansion via Red Shift. Supposedly the Universe is like a Flintstones cartoon, so if you went to one edge of the Universe you'd emerge at the other end. 2001 FTW
Our planet is in the boondocks of the galaxy. The outer rim of the Milky Way, and like the Tahitians before Captain Cook landed, we think we are it, the whole world, and like the Tahitians 4 centuries ago who had no clue of other Civilizations in the world rising and falling...there are other civilizations in our galaxy at different levels of development. Any aliens visiting us will be machines, probaly not biological. I hope they come soon but I don't see it happening.
What a great comment. Makes me want to say more about this subject. The study of what it would mean for human beings if we ever discovered that extraterrestrials exist is one of my guilty pleasures. And I too have thought along the lines you mention.
I agree. Even if these aliens had technology to travel at light speed, it'd still take many years to get anywhere. So I reckon they'd send probes and wait for telemetry. Then we'd decipher their technology and make ray-guns so we can kill each other more cheaply. Hoorah!
As usual, cogent and interesting. A great video series. I've seen UFOs and been a milab victim and have written about these experiences, to deafening lack of response. Carry on!
Is there intelligent alien life? I don't doubt it. Will they come? Haven't you heard? We're the Alabama of the Galaxy. The triptychs say, "Don't even stop there for gas!".
Whats really odd about your video, is not the fact that you are questioning aliens, but why you keep smiling. Maybe you been abducted by alienz and given a smile drug or sumthin, and also, your ideas and thoughts are sooooooo conditioned, that instead of using religion as an opiate you are using other people's ideas, and rigid ones at that.
Tried to comment, YouTube didn't post it. About Nicholas of Cusa (cardinal of Roman Church): he posited not only an infinite universe, but also an infinitesimal God - fascinating insight! About extraterrestrials: nothing new for Catholic tradition, which has largely presupposed a densely populated cosmos. About Galileo: albeit lately, the Vatican has rehabilitated him. I don't have notes on G.Bruno. My problem is not the Vatican but the Pentagon and the military-industrial complex!
Wow, extremely interesting vid - I'll hafta check this stuff out. I don't know how intelligent creatures would be capable of reaching this planet in their lifetime - maybe probes. I(and others) seen some strange phenomenon that we cannot ignore over the course of a week. So while it totally defies logical possibility, I cannot ignore what I know of. Interpretation is still possible tho. For others - the blocks of life are out there - probability in infinite space.
So if we humans ever get to the point where we can be casual space travellers then if you want to personally leave your mark on the evolution of life on distant worlds, go to the toilet on your starship and flush after you're done.
Not as unlikely as it seems if you think about it. Suppose there are spacefaring civilizations and they have spaceliners like we have oceanliners. The way we flush out poop from oceanliners may be similar to "advanced" extraterrestrial tourists flushing out poop from their spaceliners.
The Catholic Evidence Guild who often have a stand at Speakers Corner Hyde Park London said when asked why women could not become priests? Quote "That women were not spiritual beings" You can guess the reaction from many of the women in the crowd and quite right to. Some of guys joined in as well. Their meeting ended abruptly
I think life on other planets is very probable and from earth's example, it seems that intelligence eventually occurs as a survival strategy. However, intelligence like ours appears to have happened only once and very recently, so I think it will be rare.
I spent a lot of today watching through your early videos, and enjoyed them very much. You seemed to have become rather entangled in YouTube drama lately - its good to see you've gone back to being serious :)
I'm actively searching for Aliens as part of the "Seti at Home" project, on my computer.
Also, I've just finished a very good SciFi novel on the subject of alien contact by Stanislaw Lem called "His Masters Voice".
Not only do I think extraterrestrial life exists, I think the cosmos must be teeming with intelligent life, with other inhabited worlds with advanced civilizations (in whatever unknown form a social structure may evolve), etc. Bruno would probably be considered a heretic even to most of the scientists exploring the skies in Newton's time, as he saw the cosmos as a living organism (many have called him a panpsychist), rather than a machine.
If we look at life as an emergent system built on molecular interactions from carbon based chemistry, then I would think it is not only likely that it exists, but that emergent complexity would make life far more common then previously thought.
NO, Barklord, he was NOT an alchemist...In fact, he did not perform any of the same kinds of alchemical procedures that some other itinerant philosophers often did. It is true that, much later, Sir Issac Newton WAS an avid alchemist, but Bruno - no, never! The Catholic church likes to claim that he practiced witch craft and that that was the reason he was burned. That is simply untrue. Read Hilary Gatti's book on Bruno and Science. It will explain more about this.
Older scholarship, like Yates, do use the term 'spiritual alchemist' about Bruno. But I think she means that metaphorically. Most often when the term is used of Renaissance alchemists, it refers one who is physically attempting to transmute base metals into more valuable substances. When the term is applied to Bruno, it is reference to his views concerning the transformation of human beings. Transmutation for Bruno was about a changes in human thought.
My dad claims he was abducted by them and has a pretty convincing story, I would say I believe in them but over all agnostic to them.
I like the philosophy that every thing that could ever happen is happening right now some were else. Whether it be in or galaxy another galaxy or even another universe.
Well I dont have a belief in god just not enough evidence. However If aliens exsist do believers think that poor old Jesus would have to tour around all the other planets being cruxified to save them all or are we just the chosen few ?? and if so why ??
wow! the most shocking one was the precursor for amino acids found on a distant planet detected by sprectral analysis. holy crap. i'm speechless. and you know, if in the tiny amount of planets that we've scanned and already found this one, then think how many more there must be in the universe?!!! wow, wow, just wow... i'll read the article later on.
Watch the Twilight Zone TO SERVE MAN. The evolution of man, the cycle from dust to dessert. The metamorphis from being the ruler of a planet to being the ingredients in someones soup.
If it happened, the universe has natural laws that don't forbid it. So in that sense it is possible, and this planet is the evidence for it. This alone with the vastness of the universe makes me believe there is life as complex as at least the reptiles here, somewhere in the universe, or has been, or will be in the future.
With the discovery of extremofiles, and the fact that we can create some of the building blocks of life in a lab, makes me even more confident.
But discovering this life is what must happen for me to really be 100% certain, lol. I'm so sceptic, but as you can see, I believe strongly towards one direction already.
Why? So we could do to them what Europeans did to the native people of the Americas or Asia? Or what Arabs did to Africans? Or so many groups have done to others in our bloody human history? If we ever have the technology to reach them, hopefully we may, then, have the capacity to engage them in a different way, avoiding the wrongdoings in our history, but I doubt it. We evolved to destroy everything, our planet and whoever or whatever stands on our way.

goddamn u have a lot of anger, im a pacifist. i look at star trek as an example. it is just to our advantage to be technologically advanced. look at the flip side.
you want us to be victims of a war mongering alien race...be for real. you shouldnt make assumptions.
I didn't realize that replying to a comment meant anger. You made a comment, I replied to it. If you don't like people replying to your comments, then don't post. It's that simple.
You talk about assumptions but you are the one assuming that any possible life would be like us, or more like the worst of us. Aliens could have evolved in so many different ways. They could have slavery like humans have had from the prehistorical times to this day. They could be anything, just assumptions.
all i said was it wouldbe better if we found them before they found us. i didnt imply any violence or negativity in anyway. then flyingbird made me out to be genocidal. i think anyone would be insulted. think about it.
and i see everybody putting the negative thumbs. why? because you'd rather take the chance of being victims than being ambassadors of peace? whatever...
This is not a big deal. Let's not argue until they arrive. Once they arrive we can decide if we have to work together as a species against them, which I believe have never happened or simply befriend them. Who knows? Maybe they are already among us, some of them could be Hollywood stars, take Calista Flockhart for example.

Why do you instantly assume he meant violence? Do you even know the guy? He's as anti-war as they come. Maybe you should try not to make assumptions about what people think in the future.
The man is mentioning that idiotic American film, Independence Day. What else do you need as a reference of violence? Using expressions like "victims" and "warmongering alien race" were enough for me to assume he meant violence. Read all comments before posting.
By the way, I can't know everyone in the world. Why should I? He may be a pacifist when it come to "some countries" extremely aggressive instances, but that doesn't mean he is violence free.
Name calling, my favorite. I know you will go lower because as I could tell from your channel, you think you are smart. You are a joke. You are the idiot for assuming so many things. Are you the man that posted the comments? Are you posting under different names? Otherwise, you can't say shit about what he meant. Fuck you, loser. Stop making your idiotic videos and get a life. Get something for that hair loss problem as well.
Look we put this video in the most commented. That's something we achieve together, solely based on animosity and a bit of hatred. What anger and hate can do. Isn't that wonderful?
What if Mars and Venus are actually inhabited by intelligent beings? What if we've been lied to yet again? A fiberglass parachute survived in Venus' ACID atmosphere to deliver a probe.
I love conspiracy theories too, man, but petroleum is a naturaly occuring thing. Not to be confused with petroleum spirit, which is a man-made refinement of crude oil.
Well, imagine ETs came to earth... for sure we wouldn't be the first inhabited planet they visit. Now ask yourself, what kind of religion would they bring to us? What would a religion look like that different species from different planets believe in? Does anybody know HPL...?
What if they didn't have the need to invent a religion? After all, religion is a side effect of evolution. Dawkins made an excellent argument on the subject in his book The God Delusion, but others have made similar arguments in the past. They may not even have gender, sexual orientation, or even individuality. Without individuality they wouldn't need religion to coerce them into collective thinking. They could be so different in so many different ways that we may never be able to imagine it.
"They could be so different in so many different ways that we may never be able to imagine it."
Since our imagination is limited by the forms evolution brought forth by the nature on this planet, we WILL not be able to imagine any product of an alien evolution. And whatever enables different products of different planetary evolutions to cooperate may very well appear to us like a religion.
Yes, about that. And I was thinking about Zarathustra, who kept at least some parts of the persian empire from completely falling apart by inventing a new religion...
They may look to us like gods. That's not the same as saying they are bringing us a religion in the way we know it. 2bsirius made the point in her comment.
Yes, but that's not what I was saying. I'm talking about a form of communication that enables different results of different planets evolutions to cooperate. And whether or not such highly advanced tech may appear like magic, such a form of communication will appear like a religion. No matter if ETs may look like gods to us (or we to them)...
Well, that's what I said. I was not referring to the actual being looking like a god, but what they are capable of doing. I think we agreed from the beginning, but the argument was lost in translation. I'm not a religion friendly person.
To make another point from my original comment clear: HPL stands for Howard Phillips Lovecraft. In his stories he describes contact with ETs and their "spirituality"... to the average christian (that's the perspective HPL chose to tell the stories from, but he was an atheist) those concepts appear quite daemonic. He really tried to cross the limits of our imagination, sometimes he succeded, and that is rare in sci-fi.
Such a great vlog! I've always felt with the vastness of the universe, it's unlikely we were alone.
My mouth dropped when I heard the statement from the Catholic church on the news, you really have to wonder about their motive. I guess is it a bit of a quandary for them, if absolute proof were to come out, with no real mention of this in their ancient teachings, they would be expected to have some answers for their patrons.
I think because of the almost infinite numbers of places where molecules could have combined in such a way as to produce life that it is highly improbable that our planet hosts the only life in existence. How we stack up in comparison to other life forms as far as development of intelligence and technological capacity goes is anyone's guess. But, I would suppose we are somewhere in the middle. Whether we are of any interest to living entities that evolved elsewhere again is guessing. We could be
If the real driving force of evolution is the survival of the fittest, if the evolution is universally constant in the development of life and if we have anything that would be of practical utility in helping extraterrestrials survive or even be more comfortable, I guess they would find us of great interest.
I can't see that life on earth is unique... if I grasp the process of evolution correctly and also the extent of time and space then surely it will happen again/has happened before... whether we will meet... I have a hunch not in my lifetime... (40 now)
Radio 4 in the UK are doing an interesting trawl through some of the history for dummies the usual dot bbcdotcodotukslashradio4slashscienceslashcosmologyslash
I hope they're nice. Aliens, I mean. It would kind of suck if they wanted to kill us all. Not just because of the threat itself, but for aesthetic reasons (who wants their life to be co-opted into a big budget Hollywood narrative? Not me.)
well this is purely speculation but. could it be that they if they were to encounter the alien race they might be intrested spreading catholic christianity to them? atleast of the philosophical front.

There are two things I've found to be true about Alien abductions.
1) People lie their ass off.
2) They see something, but they need hypnosis to bring those memories back.
So which is it? Are you lying your ass off or did you need hypnosis to remember what had happened?

Here's a thought provoking and funny video about the Hubble deep field image from 2003 (for those that haven't already seen it), revealing a huge number of galaxies in what we see as only a tiny black spot above: watch?v=mcBV-cXVWFw&fmt=18
While I don't believe any of the popular stories about aliens, I would truly be surprised if we were alone.

one question, why are you always smiling in your videos even when you're handling serious subject matter?
it makes you look insincere.
Weyoun22 3 years ago
I've heard this before. I think it is a nervous thing I do when I'm in front of the camera. By nature I'm extremely shy, and I smile even about serious thing because of nerves, but I know it is irritating. I've tried. It is not a habit I'm going to overcome. Maybe the only answer it to not show my face on camera.
2bsirius 3 years ago
no, I didn't mean to discourage you, by all means keep making videos like you do now. We love them. I was merely making an observation.

I hope they come soon but I don't see it happening.
valhala56 3 years ago 2
What a great comment. Makes me want to say more about this subject. The study of what it would mean for human beings if we ever discovered that extraterrestrials exist is one of my guilty pleasures. And I too have thought along the lines you mention.
2bsirius 3 years ago
I agree. Even if these aliens had technology to travel at light speed, it'd still take many years to get anywhere. So I reckon they'd send probes and wait for telemetry. Then we'd decipher their technology and make ray-guns so we can kill each other more cheaply. Hoorah!

So if we humans ever get to the point where we can be casual space travellers then if you want to personally leave your mark on the evolution of life on distant worlds, go to the toilet on your starship and flush after you're done.
joesub007 3 years ago
Not as unlikely as it seems if you think about it. Suppose there are spacefaring civilizations and they have spaceliners like we have oceanliners. The way we flush out poop from oceanliners may be similar to "advanced" extraterrestrial tourists flushing out poop from their spaceliners.

I think life on other planets is very probable and from earth's example, it seems that intelligence eventually occurs as a survival strategy. However, intelligence like ours appears to have happened only once and very recently, so I think it will be rare.

Let's not forget that Giordano Bruno was also an Alchemist.
Barklord 3 years ago
NO, Barklord, he was NOT an alchemist...In fact, he did not perform any of the same kinds of alchemical procedures that some other itinerant philosophers often did. It is true that, much later, Sir Issac Newton WAS an avid alchemist, but Bruno - no, never! The Catholic church likes to claim that he practiced witch craft and that that was the reason he was burned. That is simply untrue. Read Hilary Gatti's book on Bruno and Science. It will explain more about this.
2bsirius 3 years ago
He was a Hermetic philosopher and a spiritual alchemist.
Barklord 3 years ago
Older scholarship, like Yates, do use the term 'spiritual alchemist' about Bruno. But I think she means that metaphorically. Most often when the term is used of Renaissance alchemists, it refers one who is physically attempting to transmute base metals into more valuable substances. When the term is applied to Bruno, it is reference to his views concerning the transformation of human beings. Transmutation for Bruno was about a changes in human thought.
2bsirius 3 years ago
"Transmutation for Bruno was about a changes in human thought."
That's what Alchemy is.

You talk about assumptions but you are the one assuming that any possible life would be like us, or more like the worst of us. Aliens could have evolved in so many different ways. They could have slavery like humans have had from the prehistorical times to this day. They could be anything, just assumptions.

This is not a big deal. Let's not argue until they arrive. Well, imagine ETs came to earth... for sure we wouldn't be the first inhabited planet they visit. Now ask yourself, what kind of religion would they bring to us? What would a religion look like that different species from different planets believe in? Does anybody know HPL...?
:D
tmafkap 3 years ago
What if they didn't have the need to invent a religion? After all, religion is a side effect of evolution. Dawkins made an excellent argument on the subject in his book The God Delusion, but others have made similar arguments in the past. They may not even have gender, sexual orientation, or even individuality. Without individuality they wouldn't need religion to coerce them into collective thinking. They could be so different in so many different ways that we may never be able to imagine it.
flyingbird0214 3 years ago 3
"They could be so different in so many different ways that we may never be able to imagine it."
Since our imagination is limited by the forms evolution brought forth by the nature on this planet, we WILL not be able to imagine any product of an alien evolution. And whatever enables different products of different planetary evolutions to cooperate may very well appear to us like a religion.
tmafkap 3 years ago
Your comment reminds me of Arthur Clarke's third law of prediction: any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
2bsirius 3 years ago
Yes, about that. And I was thinking about Zarathustra, who kept at least some parts of the persian empire from completely falling apart by inventing a new religion...
tmafkap 3 years ago
They may look to us like gods. That's not the same as saying they are bringing us a religion in the way we know it. 2bsirius made the point in her comment.
flyingbird0214 3 years ago 2
Yes, but that's not what I was saying. I'm talking about a form of communication that enables different results of different planets evolutions to cooperate. And whether or not such highly advanced tech may appear like magic, such a form of communication will appear like a religion. No matter if ETs may look like gods to us (or we to them)...
tmafkap 3 years ago
Well, that's what I said. I was not referring to the actual being looking like a god, but what they are capable of doing. I think we agreed from the beginning, but the argument was lost in translation. I'm not a religion friendly person.
flyingbird0214 3 years ago
Seems so... :)

My mouth dropped when I heard the statement from the Catholic church on the news, you really have to wonder about their motive. I guess is it a bit of a quandary for them, if absolute proof were to come out, with no real mention of this in their ancient teachings, they would be expected to have some answers for their patrons.
Maiyanna 3 years ago 3
I think because of the almost infinite numbers of places where molecules could have combined in such a way as to produce life that it is highly improbable that our planet hosts the only life in existence. How we stack up in comparison to other life forms as far as development of intelligence and technological capacity goes is anyone's guess. But, I would suppose we are somewhere in the middle. Whether we are of any interest to living entities that evolved elsewhere again is guessing. We could be
SSanf 3 years ago
If the real driving force of evolution is the survival of the fittest, if the evolution is universally constant in the development of life and if we have anything that would be of practical utility in helping extraterrestrials survive or even be more comfortable, I guess they would find us of great interest.
