I always play and hold down the note before inserting any mute. The reason for this is that some dampers of the wedge configuration can get pinched between the strings from the mute slightly moving the strings. When you play the note, the damper head lifts and can tear the felt off leaving it behind in the strings. When I strip mute, I lift all dampers off the strings with the pedal.
I'd like to see this doing with bass strings
