That may be, but tar sands are only partly to blame. It had more to do with burning fossil fuels in general, especially Nitrogen Oxides (NO and NO2) and Sulphur Dioxide that were released into the atmosphere. Ammonia (agriculture) is also a big contributor. Because more care is taken (think of catalysts and government policies) acid rain is now at levels way lower than in the 70's and 80's.

That tar sands are the main cause of acid rain is a simplified, if not wrong, causality.

I worked on one of the Oil Sand projects run by Suncor called Firebag, this project is located right in the middle of a Caribou Migration zone although no Caribou have been spotted in over 6 years thanks to the oil companies. I witnessed "Conservation Officers" pick up a Mother bear and leave behind her two little cubs, it took about a month before both cubs died, one hit by a truck and the other killed by coyotes. The word rape always came to mind driving through this other worldly place.

The plant is running a less than half itys capacity and would support the power for another 20-25 coal plants to be dismantled...
