He dragged about 75 injured/dead soldiers across the plateau under heavy fire and lowered them with a rope to safety. He refused to leave them behind. A Japanese soldier reported that he had him in his sights the whole time but every time he tried to shoot him, his gun would jam up. He was really under God's protection. Mr. Doss was a very devout man and he is a national treasure, a gem of a human being. I only hope my existence serves to benefit others nearly to the same degree his did.
he also was brave when he helped a man who wwas hit by a Japanese sniper . the Japanese that shot the soldier was hidden right in front of Doss while Doss was caring for the wounded soldier! The sniper could have shot Doss but God didnt let him. God always protects us!
what really counts is that he was an adventist ,im an adventist also . He really put his trust in God. I dont know what i would do if i was in the war.i would b tempted to touch a gunan kill someone so i could just b safe. I do admire how he survived in the war , but what i mostly admire his faith in GOD

Read the book "The Unlikeliest Hero". In 1962, then President Kennedy had a single MOH recipient from each American war (of those still living) attend a ceremony at the White House. ALL the living MOH awardees from WWII voted to have Doss represent them......
ok too bad god doesnt exist, but, yes; absolute hero...but the real heros are the Australians who fought in the vietnam war...we followed you americans into that hell and recieved fuck all thanks for it..500 aussies lost their lives for fuck all gain and we have nothing to show for it.

@benzobb You do realize that 60,000 Men served in Vietnam from Australia? 58 thousand American lives were lost to your 500. So why do you have your head between your legs? You think American soldiers received fuck all thanks either? Many of them got spit on when they came back. The Government has left the rest to die homeless and mentally unstable on the streets. Australians should have not expected to gain anything, its War. War gains nothing. What does one expect to gain from War ehh?

Rescuing 75 men from the top of the Maeda Escarpment on Okinawa over a TWELVE hour period and under constant fire is the simplest fact of this amazing story. One Japanese gunner reported his gun constantly jamming when he drew a bead on Desmond T. Doss. Watch this documentary !!!!!!!!
Just saw this last night on Netflix. Very inspirational.
Psalm 91:14-16 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
My squad leader showed this documentary to my platoon today. We are a medical platoon filled with combat medics who are getting ready to go to Afghanistan, and Desmond Doss has inspired me so much. If I could be half the medic that he was, then I could die with a smile on my face.
I just saw this film last night on TBS which was broadcast due to the 4th of July. What an example of FAITH and INSPIRATION this man was. He refused to bear arms and kill due to his Bible based beliefs, but he did everything in his power to SAVE LIVES. If all men were as determined in his faith as this man was, there would be no wars to begin with.
"Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore." [Isaiah 2:4]
I'm 16 and i had the honor of knowing Desmond Doss my whole life until he passed away. He was my neighbor, my friend, and a true inspiration. He was a true hero. He will be missed.
My father would tell his story after returning from war2. But so few remembered him afterwards. I had the extreme honor to have met him shortly before his death. I have been at war myself (Vietnam) and saw action and the life and death of brave men. Doss in my opinion is perhaps the braviest soldier that has lived in my time. May we all learn the honor he showed with his life. He is what a true hero should be.
What a beautiful soul - is there anyone living today with this type of determination, personal moral conviction and strong faith and courage? Our fallen soldiers & those desiring to protect the right 2 post videos, make comments & keep the free world free would understand. Thank u veterans, families & servicemen & women -u are the true celebrities, stars, royalty.
Thank u SO much for putting this on YouTube -- are u aware this is the only Desmond Doss vid on YT? Very telling.
Had the honor to have met the gentleman a few years before his death. I tell his story to the kids now days that tell me they want to join to mow down the enemy and thats what a hero does, Desmond was a true hero. I laugh when I was told how he was ordered to stop treating enemy soldiers when he when out at night durning the battles, but he couldn't stop, he just saw people in need only.
This documentary was such a blessing, I have never experienced war, but my heart goes out to people like Desmond it inspired me to be a better human being and to stand for my faith.
Outstanding documentary! Very inspiring and faith building to say the least. Show's you just how much God can and will honor great faith and trust in Him.
Hopefully people are realizing that this man was Seventh Day Adventist. Because that was true miracle-workin' right there..

When he refused to carry a gun, the men in his company called him a coward. Yet he saved many of their lives. Praise God!!
