You could have done all this in Photoshop, which would have been more convenient considering you wouldn't have to switch all the time.

  • Hello Mike. As a web developer student, what would you recommend as key web development-applications, programs or languages as a must have knowledge of expertise when it comes to building a portfolio? It is necessary or recommended to getting certifications in specialize area as a web developer beside having a AAS degree? Just wanted to get some guidance on building myself in this career path. Thanks in advance.

  • @gladeemarie The only things you need a good understanding of is XHTML and CSS as far as languages go. Basic applications to focus on is Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc. I use Fireworks over Photoshop, but Photoshop is the industry standard so I would recommend becoming fluid at it. Knowing how to mock up a web design in Photoshop or Fireworks, and knowing how to slice images and build a basic website using XHTML and CSS, that's all you need for starters.

  • @mlwebco Thank you Mike. I really appreciate the info. Take care.

  • muy bueno

  • Great tutorial. Thank you so much. Any tips on website design concepts for someone getting into the field or is it just a matter of developing your own style? Thanks in advance.

  • @gladeemarie Yes, it's just a matter of developing your own style. All designers are different. I've grown custom to designing very clean, corporate style sites where others may like the more creative style. It really depends on what you like. My advice would be to find sites you really like, study them, study the graphics and how they code the site. Then just practice. It's really no quick and easy way. Over time, weeks, months, you'll become better at that particular style.

  • @mlwebco Thank you so much for the tips and advice. I will definitely utilize them and practice, practice, practice. I look forward to your next vlog. Take care.

  • hey Mike, love your tutorials,

Do you ever have the problem where your images pixelate when resizing images from large to small in fireworks?

For example I created a logo on a canvas 500x300, then saved it as both a JPEG & PNG file. Then start to put together a simple header by importing that JPEG, and resizing it to place at the end. Once I resize the logo it pixelates.

Im not sure if im using the wrong size canvas to create my logo, or saving/importing the wrong file type to my header.

  • @TheFusionProject Yes, when you create lets say your logo (in Fireworks) on a canvas size of 500x300, you need to change the canvas resolution to above 150 DPI. You can do this in Fireworks by going to Modify > Canvas > Image Size ...then change the number in the "Resolution" field. Basically, you want to create a hi-res version of your logo. It will allow you to scale down your logo which will keep it's quality vs. scaling up with losing it's quality.

  • @mlwebco...Thanks Mike, you’re a brilliant teacher.

  • Great video :)

  • very creative and interesting.
