Imagine how incompetent you have to be as a German commander to not realize the enormous potential of that gun when soldiers carrying the gun simply walked through enemy lines. Even American soldiers carrying the M1 Garand were slaughtered in the battle of the bulge counterattack. On the eastern front it was even more devastating.
I remember a good story about this weapon. After Hitler banned production, the factories renamed the gun to MP44 and began sending it to the front, during a visit Hitler asked a field commander what do you need us to send you, he replied Mein Führer send us more MP44's, what, I don't know them? The commander showed him one and Hitler realized the mistake he made by not ordering mass production earlier in the war. Production continued but it was too late, only 425,000 were finished.
And the world's two great rivals (M-16 and AK-47) both took design details directly from the Stg 44. The Germans were always ahead of the curve when it came to small arms.
The Stg-44 Was the first weapon to bridge the gap between
the Sub-Macinegun and the Bolt action Rifle succesfully with its 7.92x33mm "Kurtz" Bullet
And is the First True "Assault Rifle".
Had the Stg-44 been put into production in 1942 when it was originally conceived
and made in sufficient Numbers, then there is no doubt it would have had a huge impact in all theatres of WW2 and beyond, negating the need for an AK-47.
But it wasnt to be and the AK became the rightful Heir to the Throne.
Fedorov Avtomat is predecessor of assault rifle concept but in modern military point of view, it is a battle rifle than a assault rifle, because it fires full-size cartridge rather than intermediate-size cartridge. MP 44 is the world's first true assault rifle.
not true, other countries had their own intermediate cartridges, like the U.S. .30 carbine. However, it was the first weapon to take such a cartridge and use it in full auto, hence an assault rifle as opposed to a carbine. (the u.s. m1 carbine was later made with a full auto option just after ww2 making it more of an assault rifle as well)
Unfortunately the STG44 isn't the first assault rifle ever built. The Fedorov Automat was the first (designed in 1916). It just got forgotten by history because only 3,200 were built before production ceased in 1924.
On an unrelated note, that Hetzer is absolutely gorgeous. It always makes me smile to see those little tank destroyers cruising around.
@realcooldude22 Well... I admit it's closer to a battle rifle (maybe even a light MG, since it uses a full power rifle cartridge, but it doesn't have a bipod, and its deployment tactics were far different than contemporary LMGs like the BAR and the Madsen, so I'd lean more towards battle rifle) than a true assault rifle...
@tallguy3708 The AK47 was not a copy of the STG, the internals are completely different. Mikhail Kalashnikov also stated himself that it was not a copy. The Russians adopted the SKS after the war but they wanted a fully automatic weapon, thats when the AK popped up and became standard issue. Only the concept of an assault rifle was inspired by the Sturmgewehr.
@TaZ101SAGA Kalashnikov is not an unbiased reporter. Schmeisser was on the AK-47 Team, and part of Kalashnikov's job was to agree with the official propaganda story.
Very entertaining bloke isn't he? History with a bit' o fun! I agree with Ammosmith: Yes! We need a field strip tour of this magnificent weapon and possibly a firing demonstartion!! Great to see one in working condiditon. Yanks are the luckiest!!

@the308capital
Not really. The StG44 weren't even close to being the first assault rifle. That particular honour falls to the Russian Fedorov Avtomat from 1915.
In fact plenty of countries were developing assault rifles in the years up to the war.
Heck, even Denmark were developing them (The Weibel M/1932) though the war prevented it from being introduced in numbers.
Anyway, neither the M-16 nor the AK-47 uses the same recoil mechanism as the StG-44.

Very interesting gun!

well, actuelly in 1916 there was a russian made assault rifle that was chambered in the 6.5 japanese cartridge. just never went into mass production.
alvinyork1916 5 months ago
this combined with the SKS made the AK-47
one of if not the best assult rifles out there(the AK-47 i mean).

Sturmgewehr doesn't mean Assault rifle. Sturm=Storm, Gewrhr=Rifle. So it's Stormrifle 44.
