for a bunch of scientists, they certainly seem under-prepared. only an american would wear shorts and short sleeved shirts in the desert. what morons.
Thank you, internet. Ive read about this YEARS ago, but since it was from a book, I just kinda had to imagine what it sounded like. And here it is. Mystery solved. Thanks internet!
What beautiful scenery! Desolate, lonely, empty, and yet filled with graceful, flowing forms and sharp contrasts of light and shadow. Wish I could go there and hear the booming noise myself.
My colleagues and I have been investigating for a while now. Believe it or not, we are starting to think that the sand dunes are ONE BIG ORGANISM! This is disturbing for us and we just HAD to let everybody know. We've already talked to the government about this and they are starting to look into this. We had discussions and wanted to know if we were in any real kind of danger. I just have to tell you, get to the nearest shelter and hide. WE ARE ALL IN DANGER!

You see, finally the truth has come out, or maybe it's not the truth at all? They WANT you to believe it's all scientific and it's all about energy. They WANT you to think it's all fine, no problem, BUT IT'S NOT! What you all don't know is that someone, or SOMETHING lives under those sand dunes, or should I say, sound dunes.
Why do they have to hike up there why cant they like take a rhino, or like a dune buggy to get to the top, they could take a whole lot more equipment up there, and it would be a fun ride
Its aliens underground. I was in Vegas once sitting on a small dune and I felt this knocking vibration underneath me like the dune was hollow and someone inside was hitting the surface. I thought I was gonna get abducted.
when i was lil at the sand dunes in colorado we use to jump down the dunes and they would make farting sounds when you landed hahaha.this is pretty sweet
funny comment since until only months ago every land rover was made by ford AND land rover's worst reliable ratings happened during the period ford owned/operated their plants (2000-2008). do some research before you talk shit to someone else you fucking moron
of they echo loud like they say throughout the valley, u gotta do it to more than one at a time to make different chords. and also try to figure out which ones make which notes
Its probably a buddah guy sitting indioan style in the middle of the sand dune in his towel under wear and a turban and a long beard and long fingernails, playing the didjeradoo =D
The Dunes are Alive ! ... with the sound of music (La la la la) ... with the booms they have played , for a thousand years ... The Dunes fill my heart ! ... Ok you get the point.
I think I guessed what the outcome was going to be before I watched it.. Have you ever walked through very dry; powdery sand, and heard a crunching/squeaking sound? I guess it's because of the vibration of the compacted sand rubbing together and causing a vibration under your feet.. It's a similar idea to the heavy dry sand layers traveling over a dunes surface.. Really interesting..
Nice to see NG did a clip on this!! I went with my boyfriend to Death Valley last summer to climb these dunes. We started out at 7:45am b/c he wanted to be the first to break "fresh" sand. It was already burning hot and took much physical endurance to move through the VERY soft sand. We got to the highest dune and "skied" all the way down. The sound was absolutely amazing!! Exactly as described sounding like a Tibetan gong. This 1.5 mile hike (each way) took us 4 hours, but it was so worth it!
no shit its the wind. they want exact details.. they obviously know what caused it already, or how would they know how to recreated it. obviously they are collecting some data.
Clearly this is the origin of Dubstep.

Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy.
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind.

interesting and weird. are there no analogs to this phenomenon elsewhere in the world?
there are also sand dunes on mars. could this phonemenon be observed there as well? perhaps mars thin atmosphere wouldn't allow the sound to carry.

Very cool video!!
MrWicked61671 2 years ago
Wait a sec! Are they saying that the sounds produced are 'tuned' notes, not random frequencies?
Random amounts of sand should equal random frequencies.
Or is the note defined by some factor of the dune, like the slope?
Jamelith 2 years ago
Well it said the thicker the sand layer, the lower the note i believe.
killerzombie163 2 years ago
I think it's defined by the size of the layer of dry sand in which the note is reverbarating.
