I never claimed it was a ripoff, just that it sounded similar, enough to make me recall "Fast Car", that's all...Besides, it would be impossible for Chapman to rip off Tom Petty unless she happens to know the secret of time travel, seeing as "Learning to Fly" came out nearly 3 years *after* Chapman's self-titled debut in '88...

As for your observation about the similarity between "Fast Car" and "Jack & Diane", I can hear the influence there, but I don't think that any more of a ripoff, either.

No it's not, he has the lower neck tuned differently so he can do the slide solo at 1:44. You can't do that in standard tuning with a slide. Just uses the top neck for rhythm.
