Damn! I remember being at this concert. Wet Willie doesn't get the respect they deserve. This is REAL MUSIC. A special time and place in my youth, Thanks for posting!
My hometown. My hometown band. I remember that day. Jimmy is still going strong. He another band, but they cannot compete with the original. "Keep on Smilin'." Those were the days, my friend.
These guys played St. Louis alot in the 70's and I always enjoyed seeing them. They put on such a good show! Saw them at The Mississippi River Festival (at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois btw) and they were always the backup band everytime I saw them and always thought they could have headlined myself :)
ok people. Macons music is alive and kicking!!! But its not in the form of southernrock. Sure we need to embrace the past, but we need to embrace the present and some of these great bands we have right now. Its evolved and grown into something more. Come out to grants lounge July 2 First Friday to see what its all about. MAcon NOISe!!!!!
If you guys only knew the the hundreds of times I listened to this whole album alone in my bedroom night after night as a young teenager in the early-mid 70's....what a super sound....so happy to also see them in concert twice in the 70's...
@JEDIALADDIN Me too, JEDI. I saw them on a triple bill in Mobile with the Allman Brothers and Quicksilver Messenger Service in '74; Quicksilver opened, Wet Willie played second, and throngs of people left the stadium before the Allman Brothers played. I thought it was weird, but presumably WW satisfied them. I think they were from Mobile, so it was a hometown crowd that loved them. My friends and I had traveled from New Orleans that day to see the Brothers.
The problem w/ Macon is everyones so hung up on the past that they ignore the present and future. I totally agree that the history should be preserved but there are very talented people in abundance that are trying to build something here in Macon & trying to get this city the way we all know it could be. But it is near impossible to do that when everyone is so hung up on what happened 30 to 40 years ago. Youth and fresh ideas are the only thing going to make Macon anything but a washed up city.
@shawnguitar "The problem ..."? A multitude of problems are holding Macon back. Macon and Bibb County's local government officials, Chamber of Commerce, etc. are in such a state that recovery will take a lot of time - or even a miracle. "The problem" is not simply our wonderful memories of the wonderful times 30 to 40 years ago.
I just got a copy of this on a bootleg DVD, also including a Marshall Tucker set and a rare Allman Brothers set (without the one and only Skydog)...but all in all, these guys GET DOWN!!!!
Macon's Music Scene - such under-rated outlaws as Divided Like a Saint's, New generation.... Red Dog's son... remember Tad Bush? Rodney Mills? Oh, Chemists? Oh, No They Didn't? Nomenclature? Citizen Insane? Trufflelina? Floco? The new soul, man, par Chagnos. Cultish. Cult. Please check it out. Bookstore first friday
@thetalkingtelephone1 - Rodney Mills, wow what a memory. Engineered all of Atlanta Rhythm Section's early albums...and don't forget Ronnie Hammond (ARS lead singer) is from Macon.
I still like to visit Rose Hill whenever visiting relatives in Warner Robins! Been going to WR since mid-60's, Rose Hill since summer of '73. I'm from Mobile. I remember WW back when they were "Mrs. O'leary's Cow." I had a very cool uncle that took me to the carousel and introduced me to Hodges. I even got to eat some of his red hot chicken! BTW, aarfeld and boots.... what do you guys think of Doc Holiday? Talking about under-rated.... These guy's are a great group! Don
@bootsiebanty: What happened to little Macon? What did its economy used to be based on and what caused its downturn? And, what's this I hear about the mayor being great buddies with Hugo Chavez? Gee, that ought to have been great politically for comrade mayor. :-/
I can't give any details on it. I think it's just a case of the productive people pulling up stakes and leaving, with the unproductive (and usually criminal element) moving in. I can't say that I completely disagree with all that Chavez has said, but this mayor of Macon you speak of helped Macon about like a bucket of gasoline helps put out a fire.
@bootsiebanty: This is a pattern that we've seen repeated in many American cities. Fortunately, many communities have been able to take their cities back, it just takes dedicated pioneers and creative city initiatives to lure back residents who can turn the tide. If you ask me, given its legacy, Macon is missing its opportunity to become the Branson of Southern Rock: a citywide showcase for veteran and young acts of this genre.
Hmm, the Branson of Southern Rock. It is a nice idea, but I don't think it could work for Macon. I think Branson was just a tiny place, in which the present Branson was built around. Macon, being much larger, could probably never become known as such a Mecca for S. Rock, as Branson is for Country. For one thing, where would the lowlifes currently living there be moved to? I'm afraid the GA Music Hall of Fame is probably the best Macon can do.
@bootsiebanty: Be that as it may, Macon doesn't appear to be doing anything to highlight its cultural legacy. If it weren't for private initiatives: like Kirk West's preservation of the Big House and his transforming it into an Allman Bros. Museum, or the effort by others to restore Capricorn Studios as either an historic recording studio or a modern one, not much would be happening. There should be historic markers at all the significant sites: The ABB's first group house on College St., etc.
Macon is in a tumultuous state right now. There is not a lot of unity with the people, the city gov't, to say the least. Seems to me the city is in a just-trying-to-survive mode right now. But hell yayah man, who could forget Capricorn in the '70s. I was actually never much of an Allman B's fan. Marshall Tucker, The Outlaws and Blackfoot were more to my liking. Remember White Witch?
@thenifeelnothing Yeah, who could forget. They put on a great show, especially during that period (late '73). Two of them are no longer with us: Ron Goedert the singer, and Buddy Pendergrass the keyboardist (he was the one wearing those huge white shoes in that famous pic from the graveyard on their first album). He said those were shoes borrowed from a roadie. The record company suddenly wanted the photo shoot, and they had to throw together what threads they could find quick.
@bootsiebanty Macon was soo cool back in the 70's .People that live there now would rather go to ATL its only 80 mins. away. And theres so much more to offer there
WOW! Great audio and video! Loved this one on the original albums and I wish I could see a live version of them with the song, "Trust in the Lord" off the same LP....WET WILLY I LOVE YOU GUYS! Thanks especially for the 70's concerts and the two I got to see!!
12-31-71 is the first time I heard these guys introduced: "LIVE FROM MOBILE ALABAMA WITH A LITTLE RED HOT CHICKEN THE WET WILLIE BAND" THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE "SOUTHERN FRIED" albums. Thank you gcbdad.
WAY FRICKIN COOL! I just can't get enough of this video. Jimmy you got the music in you for sure. When you Wet Willie guys gonna make a huge record and get back on the road. I can;t wait.
