Porcupine tree is quickly becoming my favorite band and this is from someone who grew up listening to Pink Floyd, the Stones Beatles, etc. Opeth is another great band that I am discovering. I would recommend either band to any music fan. I get to see them (Opeth)in Kansas City in a couple of months. Can't wait!

'The Moor' on still life is still one of their best ever tracks, and not only Opeth's best album opener, but one of metal's best album openers. I do not yet own 'My arms your hearse', but have heard 2 or 3 songs from it, 'when', a live favourite, and 'Karma', which is brilliant, with a great riff near the end. Yes, watershed is quite possibly (probably) their best album yet, but don't be (PART 2 of reply to 'rounder''s comment) so quick to poo-poo their earlier material.

What makes you say Opeth was at a dead end? I agree they are both wonderful bands, but on a personal level, I think Damnation and Deliverance are some of their better albums. Blackwater Park, for that matter, is a personal favorite.

If you would've watched the documentary that was included on their live DVD 'Lamentations', you would know this. They were extremely stressed, nothing seemed to work, they were convinced their material was some of the worst they'd ever written. If I remember well, Mikael even literally said he "believed it was the end of the band". That's where good old Steven came in and revived them.

I don't understand why people like the older stuff. I'm not trying to diss your likes at all bunder, because I am one of the few people in the world who realizes that music is subjective, but to me, BWP on it's where Opeth came to life. I think the old stuff sounds very amatuerish. Maybe because I do not come from a death metal background, I like the newer stuff. I only say this cuz so many people seem to like the older Opeth. The Lotus eater is one of the finest songs Mikeal has ever written.

To me, listening to Opeth is pure energy. When it sends shivers all over my body, it's good to me. And well... if I have to name one cd that did that for me, it's definitely My Arms, Your Hearse. That's pure brutal raw energy, killer riffs, especially the outro on Karma is amazing. And to me that felt like a real album, a journey, like Watershed is.

I wouldn't call myself an Opeth fan if I didn't appreciate the stuff from the 90s just as much. But I do. Still Life is a landmark album too.

One remark though, you're probably talking about the early albums they made on Candlelight Records (Orchid, Morningrise,...) ? I must say the recording quality is crap compared to the perfect stuff we're used to nowadays, but you've only given the music an honest chance if you can look past that. If you really like their recent stuff, there will be some time you'll love their old stuff too. I know it took a long time before I liked Still Life and M.A.Y.H. Regular albums of choice on my iPod :D
