I'm 22 and pissed off that they won't come to Caspar in Mendo County so so I can get them all high as a kite and teach me some guitar licks. Gene Parsons is here. Kris Kristofferson is here. David fucking Bowie has a house around here too. Even Christopher Lloyd.
I have to confess that I always skipped this track when listening to Déjà Vu. God, the guy had only two songs in the album, it is not possible he did not have a better one in his vault. Now we know why The Birds fired the freak. Image him showing up at rehearsals saying man I have this great new song. Now looking at all the old Crosby videos, it kind of fits. Still annoys me endlessly but it makes sense.

The music is awesome, but I'm blown away at the details of how Steve and Dave interact near the opening, then the unity, the brotherhood, the love all grow as they make their testament to free personhood.
@kohisiyo aint played c s n y for ages, but after seeing and listening to this im getting all my vinyl out and going back to the 70s and the first album im playing is 4 way street.
Saw them live a few times back in the day. Played this song and many others in garage band. Plan to play it again soon with a group of locals. This and Long Time Gone played more like Santana. (Gotta get those minor 7ths in there.) Stills had a big influence on my style. I suggest young people go back and listen to Buffalo Springfield, Crazy Horse, Hollies.
@MFCMN We would all love it if you could videotape your local band when it plays this song and post it, or send it to me using Filemail.com (email large files < 2GB). Thanks for your interesting comment.
@1111mjon Alright! I always thought that "owe it to someone" first and foremost referred to Kent State - Four Dead in Ohio. After that I might list the '68 Chicago convention fallen, Vietnam veterans and, well, David Crosby. It makes no sense I know because he would be singing about himself. But to remind him that he is not alone. --- I gotta look up the child he fathered with Melissa Etheridge, must be turning into an interesting person. Thanks for commenting.
@seacow313 His chords set the song into motion. Crosby is a superb rhythmn guitarist. Listen to his meaty Gretcsh chords underneath McGuinn's elec. 12 string on 8 Miles High.
@seacow313 I've always loved the way the guitars layer and cascsade in and out when these guys play - 3 guitars but a lot of gaps and listening going on.
@seacow313 It didn't REQUIRE 3 axes to do this, but when you got one in your hand and the vibe is ripe, you're gonna throw some notes in there. It's a live-music kinda thing.
@PalerShadeOfWhite Yeah, I'm a huge fan of his work. He puts everything he's got into every performance. He's my biggest musical inspiration. I play guitar, but I'm in cast right now, im goin nuts not being able to play.

@psychoprosthetic I had never known what Gibson Firebirds are (yeah yeah what rock was I living..). Now I looked it up because of you. Thanks for the ed.
@PalerShadeOfWhite Always glad to hear of people enjoying guitars more. Firebirds are just a great slab of mahogany with those nasty nasty minihumbuckers. Yum!
Can't see the amp, but he's using it well: )
I think Stills is really underrated as a guitarist.
@seacow313 cool. They're great guitars if you've got the space - just don't turn round quickly when playing one. I've not heard the minihumbuckered les pauls but suspect they'd sound good too. Alas the firebird copies I've tried don't do it - maybe with original pickups in they would. Wish I could afford one - but I'd need to knock a wall down.
dlee - I, too, enjoyed seeing them during the summer of 1974 at Mile high in Denver. I, too, at age 57 continue to "Let my freak flag fly" but it too isn't the mane that it once was.
