I may have not been a fan of Shakespeare or Romeo + Juliet but this movie was good but it could have been better if they didn't use the old English in a modern setting

@ThunderEagle115 I disagree, I LOVED the style choice of old english in the modern setting. It's what made it Romeo and Juliet and it had never been done. This movie had been done a hundred million times, but never like this. Preferences are preferences though ;).

@element1108 i guess that's okay but i sort of disagree with it. the movie had a lot of corny moments and of course i didn't really seem to think that the dialouge fitted in with a modern setting. not to mention they only showed Paris once and he was a key character to the original story. however what i did like about it was that it was a good start and of course it was creative in music. of course though u have ur opinion and i have mine so i'll respect ur opinion

You have to understand that Shakespeare's writing is phenomenal. If you do away with the original language, the beauty of the play is lost. So much is revealed about Romeo and Juliet and their love through their words. The whole play is a masterpiece of prose and poetry-- words that sound like music.

The director made the movie in a present day setting in an attempt to bring in new audiences... which he apparently did if you have seen it.

i watched it in my english class and i would have much rather seen the play because it would have made a lot more sense to see that language used in the day it was written in if you know wot i mean.

That is a good point. It can be helpful to see it as it was meant to be performed "back in the day." The play was meant for live theatre.

If you are really interested, you should watch the 1968 Zefferelli version. It is definitely more authentic... not to mention very romantic.

Many people automatically don't like the new version. But if you know the play well, you can see that the new version is definitely in the spirit of Shakespeare. The director did an awesome job of predicting what Shakespeare would do if he could make a film today. Not everyone hates the '96 version. I actually think it is brilliant and more moving than the '68 version. You're not alone.

si tu no fueras tan ñoño sabrias que la pelicula es una adaptacion "moderna" de la obra literaria de Shakespear Romeo y Julieta y trata basicamente de como el odio entre dos familias que bien pueden ser razas, creencias etc etc pueden desencadenar suceso tragicos.... aprendamos, analisemos y recapacitemos....
