  • Watching this video I can see why she became such a huge star. She isn't the world's greatest beauty, nor it's greatest talent, but she has personality and charisma that just shines through!

  • She is striking and intelligent and very witty. It seems you had to have a modicum of talent to be a stripper (fan dancer) back then. What an amazing woman.

  • I always heard "she had to strip because she wasn't attractive," but she looks beautiful to me...

  • @GamesR4FITE Actually, she stumbled upon it when she was 15 and working at a bourlesque club. The star of the show wasn't able to perform and her mother volunteered Gypsy to be the main act. The difference between the stars and ordinary dancers was that the star appeared nude or stripped. Gypsy, 15 at that time, didn't strip as was expected, she hardly undressed herself. But because of good crowd response she stuck with the act: the above is about 19 years later.

  • @GamesR4FITE Oh, and her sister was considered the prettiest of those two, which doesn't mean that she's ugly in general, just compared to her sister (June Havoc).

Not my opinion by the way, just what I know.

  • She is just adorable!

  • Oh how innocent this world used to be.

  • Apparently my grandfather once fixed a watch for her.

  • aww that was incredible thanks for post.. bless her

  • if anyone knows where i can find the full monologue, i'd be extremely grateful

  • that was adorable! she was lovely

  • Being sexy without a lot of actual sex, and doing it with class and style is sadly a lost art in the United States today. A lot of the "divas" in American media today could use some lessons from Gypsy Rose Lee.

  • There was only one like her.

  • there will never be another like gypsy rose lee, shes so beautiful and classic...shes just divine

  • Charming :)

  • hoh hoh hoh hoh

Here's another fiver...go to the pictures... for the evening..

  • Beautiful

  • I'm smiling now ~

  • That woman is a legend!!

  • Bump it with a trumpet

  • Anyone notice the striking similarities in her monologue with Rita Hayworth's when she does her "Zip" number in "Pal Joey"? Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

  • @joshstoph ~ i haven't seen 'pal joey', but it was gypsy rose lee's sister june havoc who played in the original 'pal joey' musical on broadway. in 1940. hayworth's film role came 17 years later.

gypsy was famous for not using "zippers", and the term "zip" was associated with stripping. i'm guessing hayworth's role was patterned after miss lee. this bit was a staple of hers, evolving over the years and quite well known during her prime.

  • haha damn i just knew that big ass country dress was comin off haha (btw check out her story on NPR.org)

  • I forget where, but I thought I had heard years ago that Gypsy wasn't attractive.

They LIED! Lied like lying liars.

She's crazy funny, very classy, I love that dress, and has them all eating out of her hand.

  • Wow. I'm in love.

  • What a legend!

  • I was suprised to find out that my father was her Trumpet player for years !

    what a mind blower ~!!!
