In the first game, American McGees Alice, the card guards where all killed by Alice so they are now zombies. When Alice was about to meet the red queen, the red queen made the Cheshire Cat´s head blow up. The white chess pice guy on the door that was talking was the White King, who was captured by the Red Queen after she killed the White Queen. Search American McGees Alice for more info on what happened in the game.

@loveatfirstvideo They're harder because they're zombies, they became undead after Alice killed the Red Queen. You know how the cat tells Alice that she didn't pick up the crown after killing the queen, that means that se didn't take over her own mind, and the queen remains as a kind of memory still strong and lingering, but useless and no longer in power so she just tries to hold on to her domain. Someone else has taken over Alice's mind, but who, and why?

Oh nice my comment is already in the top comments. I'm so happy I'm going to give you helpful hints while speaking in riddles. Whenever the queen plays her trump card remove your pieces from the board until you get a good footing. With time on your side you can tip the scales in your favor.
