Phaneuf is a a new version of Rob Ray (former Sabre and Senator) He is one of the best defenceman in the league (although Scott Stevens will always be the all-time defenecman) and even though Phaneuf is in Toronto, I think he will wear the "C" if he stays with the team, next season (Oct)

Look at mike green, one of the best canadian defence men in the league and he was left off. Dion is having a rough year but that doesnt take away from any of his skill. the idea that hockey is supposed to be about skill has been hijacked and made into a debacle.
when i watch the leafs on saturdays before the game even starts we are bombarded with military recruitment propaganda. there is soldiers rappeling from the ACC's roof, Lukes Troops, and don cherry telling us about the "Heros" that died for democracy. then when the game starts we watch a dumbed down version of hockey where brute force and "Truculence" is held in higher regard then skill.

@Unbannable People are willing to pay that amount to watch hockey or to buy NHL merchandise. Life isn't fair, fighting is and always has been part of hockey, and so has hitting. There are lots of fat people i know that can't skate worth shit. If you want finesse, without hitting, watch figure skating. Hockey is whatever the best team makes it.

I am reading all the crybaby Flames fans talk about how Phaneuf isn't as good as he was but the fact is we also got Sjostrom and Aulie. White may become better then Phaneuf one day, highly unlikely. I think Aulie will be a star in the NHL one day. I remember the last time Toronto made a huge deal like this based on the Flames GM assuming that the star was washed up. stajan - 2nd line centre at best... not a gamebreaker, not a guy you want centering your top line winger(s) for the future... was thrown into that role with kessel quite frankly because toronto had nobody else!
hagman - very hard working player at both ends, has some soft hands when he is confident... 25-30 goals max, another 2nd liner
white - solid skater, puck mover, some offense, but not a top two defenseman.
mayers - effective fourth line player who can hit, no hands or offensive skill

I still can't believe the Flames gave up on Phaneuf. I know he has had a rough season but he is still only 24! Most defensemen dont reach their prime until around 28.
If Dion ever matures a bit and even comes close to reaching his massive potential then Darryl Sutter is going to look very stupid!
